My specs are in my sig. I have an Antec 500W powersupply. Recently it seems my 8800GT doesn't like to stay cool despite re-applying thermal paste. It's helped, but...... for lack of better words it seems to just be dying. I'll get random freezes in games, flickers, and black screens..... I'm reading this is common... It's about 3 years old.

I have just really having a hard time justifying 300+ for a new card, but I don't see any others being the best price per value over my 8800GT.

Open to suggestions. I've looked at the 5770's, but I just don't know. 100 dollars more is a lot more performance.

i think you might need a better psu for a 5850, not 100% sure you may be ok with what you got, but your psu should be fine for a 5770 which depending on the game is anywhere from 30% to 60% faster than an 8800gt

Can you RMA your 8800GT?

I RMA'd my XFX 8800GT which was dying and eventually got a 9800 GTX back through that process. Sold it and the proceeds went toward a new card, I ended up with a 5870.

Antec 500W will be perfectly fine. My 5870 system probably doesn't even crack 350 watts.

Which Antec 500W?

There are some pretty crappy Antec 500W PSUs out there.

Also what's the max resolution of your monitor?

I had a 8800gt and upgraded to a 5850. The jump in performance was pretty noticeable. I am glad I did it. As for the PSU I am running my system on a Rosewill 500 watt for months now, maybe not the best idea, but it works fine. Antec would probably be even safer. I measured my system at 350 watts at the wall, so as long as that particular Antec is quality, it should be fine.

If you're looking for good prices on a really good 5850, check out this deal with BCB:

+1 for trying to RMA it.

I Just ordered the this card

My PSU is 520W Corsair 3 years old,Think going to hold ?

Depending on the rest of your specs, it should hold. I have the same exact PSU which I also bought 3 years ago and I'm about to find out if my ASUS 5850 will work with it. I've googled reviews of people who have the same PSU we have and the radeon hd 5850 and they say it works fine even under load with moderate overclocks.

You should be fine. Corsair makes great psus. I have the 750 in my system but it doesn't pull much more than 300-400W fully loaded w/ a 5870 and a 8800GT folding.

Great thanks guys.

I lied. It's an Antec 550W SLI... Truepower, I believe.

Truepower Trio? Truepower New? Truepower 2.0? or just Truepower?

Yes there are 4 different Truepower models. 5 if you count the Truepower Quattro.

I honestly can't recall and I'm too lazy to look harder inside the case.

But, I'm more than sure it would handle a 5850, if it can take my Q6600 at 4.0. But, right now my GPU is doing fine. So I don't know. Plus, money is a real issue and if my 8800GT is still prowling along, I'll keep it. It does what I need.

See I wouldn't be too sure about:

The Truepower I and II series as well as the Smartpower series were well known for their above average death rates due to a poor choice in caps and cooling design. In more specific terms, Antec/CWT specified/used caps (Fuhjyyu caps) that did not respond well to heat. Unfortunately, Antec made the decision to have the PSU fan only ramp at really high temps in an effort to keep the PSU quiet. However, just medium to high temps were enough to screw up the caps so really high temps were murderous. Over time, this degraded the quality and performance of those PSU series.

So I recommend replacing the PSU, especially if you hear a squeal, whine, or any odd noise coming from the PSU. Those are usually the first signs of those particular PSU lines dying. So if you do hear a squeal, whine, or any odd noise, that's enough grounds to replace the PSU.

A HD 5850 upgrade would definitely push one of the Truepower or Truepower 2.0 PSUs to their death and possible the death of other hardware as well. If you have the Truepower New or Truepower Trio, you'll be in the clear.

i went to a 5830 i know a lot of people dont like the card but getting it brand new for 200 at the time was pretty nice and 4 bucks back from bing, works well over my old 8800gt

I went from an 8800GT to a 5850 ($279 @ eWiz) and i'm quite satisfied with my purchase :)

After 2 DOA piece of crap RMA from Evga I decided to change to a XFX HD-585X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB.

Should arrive mid next week.:D

I have a GTX 275 on a "meh" Raidmax 530watt PSU and it has been going strong for a long while. And the GTX 275 is a LOT less efficient then the 5850.

mine barely hit's 300 watts in game's.

my rig works fine and it only has the 300W psu that came with the case. people seem to overshoot what psu they "need" by a lot

Well we told you so. Don't come crying here afterwards.

The NeoHE ought to be fine.

Anyways, to answer XamediX's question, the 5850 is considered faster than the GTX 285, which is faster than the 280 so it follows that 5850 > GTX 280.

Is there a difference between the 585A and 585X? The A looks to be the design with the fan at the end of the card instead of the middle.

The 585A (from looking at the pics) appears to be based on the reference design.

i got a xfx 5850...havent regretted it at all, the thing is a powerhouse...but i never used the 8800GT so i dont have a real frame of reference
