What I thought was going to be a clear case of “no duh, phones break when you drop them” turned into a full on conspiracy thanks to the comments section of this article. Seriously, the comments are better than the article.

We have a full iPhone 4(minus the circuit board), here at our shop and decided to do a little drop test. This drop was performed from 3.5 ft up. Mind you that these parts ARE original apple parts. Laser etched and all. The iPhone 4 did survive 2 drops, as expected, but on the 3rd drop there was a loud POP, and yet again, shattered glass.

icrap this and icrap that... GESH give it a rest with the icrap.

And that folks is why I don't have an Iphone, kinda stupid to have a glass screen on a phone, huh?

Hey, look at it this way, now no matter how close you hold it, and how good your eyesight is, you won't be able to distinguish any pixels.

FAAAAAAAAKE FAAAAAAAAAAKE OMG, LIBERAL SCUM AND YOUR LIES! /s

Have you done an iPhone 4 in the microwave oven test? o_O

um... you realize LCD's are glass right? just throwing that out there...

additionally the glass digitizer protects the LCD, it breaks first, and usually the LCD is left intact... which is nice because generally digitizers are cheaper than LCD displays anyway...

i really wish they used glass digitizers on the android phones, they just feel nicer, are generally more responsive etc...

You mean it breaks if you drop it?

oh noes!!!!!!!!

Maybe Apple should make theif phones like Panasonic Toughbooks instead. *rolls eyes*

I'm still going to get one. I skipped the 3GS so its time for an upgrade. Any decent smartphone that you pay good money for, whether it be Apple, HTC, Samsung, etc. should be in some kind of protective case anyway. Ive dropped my iPhone 3g from about 3.5 feet up onto solid granite tile twice (holster popped off of my belt because i got too close to the counter with it) without so much as a scratch on it.

I think what someone mentioned though is that in this case, the digitizer is BONDED to the LCD screen, meaning if one breaks the other at minimum has to be replaced as well. Though more than likely they will both break.

I understand and commend apple for what they were TRYING to do, which is make a screen much more resistant to scratching, but it looks like they forgot to check if it made it more brittle as well. Remember diamonds are hard, but they can be cleaved much more easily if hit along the right axis.

LOL a reply youd expect only from one who would like to be puffin on Steve Jobs pipe...why do apple lovers have to be so stupid...they remind me of gay people they feel they need special attention because they are different, than wonder why people discriminate lol

I hate to break it to you but you guys used a Dead Blow Hammer to make this impact. I’ve got an industrial design specialist who tests durability willing to testify against this garbage of a test. The hammer head impact on the screen is plain as day in the upper right hand corner of the unit. I don’t think anyone who knows industrial materials would be so stupid to think this was from a drop.

Nice try guys but you effing fail.

There’s your culprit.

well they havent done that since the 2G... and in their updated pics they show just the digitizer so I am guessing they are not bonded

The comments on that blog post are redonkulus. Its a glaring reminder that retards really do need help with daily tasks such as critical thinking and wiping after pooping.

iPhone protection sleeves have been around since the first iPhone. Get one, use it. If you don't have one, you deserve your broken iPhone. That goes for just about any large touchscreen smartphones.

seriously... use your brain... you think a 3 and half foot drop would cause that kind of damage. All you apple haters really have to open your eyes... so eager to find something negative, blinded by your own prejudices.

Actually yes I do think a 3 1/2 drop would do that as it did to my wifes iphone. There is a reason that the iphone repair companies are thriving and its not because everyone is hitting their phones with hammers.

I dunno. It is real hard for me to believe, but definitely possible. My 3G fell off a rollercoaster on Six Flags and it only had some minor scratches on the usb connector portion (Six Flags sent it back to me a week after it happened) and it is still going strong today. Since it is a new design I'd definitely be more inclined that this is possible, but the current iphones are pretty tough.

Very well stated, and entirely accurate. Here in my area on craigslist, it's every cell phone store and their little brothers too advertising 24/7 for replacing the glass - they wouldn't be spamming that crap 500x a day unless they're making duckets off the service.

LOL, yup. The ADF is out in full force on this one. Come on, this is a no brainer.

Yeah one of my friends had their 3gs do it when it fell out of their car but at only about 2.5 ft. It was hilarious watching them try to use it.

Well, I can see it both ways. On the one hand, yes shit will break if your drop it. On the other, phones do get dropped, perhaps they should be a bit rugged. Blackberrys seem to survive drops pretty well, particularly if they are in their little sleeve they come with.

Also their screen is plastic, not glass.

yep my blackberry has been through hell and it still works

The point isn't that oh no it broke when dropped. It is the fact that as always Apple is making false claims about how perfect something of theirs is. They came out saying that it is 30x stronger than plastic. They are trying to sell people on the fact that this is supposed to be some super glass that will be much harder to scratch and break. And what happened during some testing, it broke that is what happen. So it is just the same as any other display on any other phone. It isn't some super indestructable glass, it isn't some super strong new material. Just a normal display. Nothing for people to get excited about thinking that they new iPhone will work as bullet proof armor or that any fears of breaking it from a drop being gone.

Imagine having to take care of your possessions .... what a thought.

They do. The Moto Droid, for instance, has the same Gorilla Glass that the iPhone 4 will be using. The cheap Android phones might not, but the nicer ones do.

While yes, that technically is a thought, its really not much of one :p

Seriously, people drop things they care about - shit happens. When you carry something around with you all day for 2 years, the chances of you dropping it onto cement regardless of how careful you are is pretty high.

Didn't anyone read the details:

"We proceeded down the hallway with our assembled iPhone 4(minus the internal circuit board), ...."

They put parts together and dropped that. This was not a full iphone, it was just a shell made from the repair parts they had on hand. The real phone with guts for support may work better or may work worse but we don't know since they didn't try a full phone.

The internal guts would make it heavier, which would make it more likely to break, not less. The problem wasn't structural integrity (which could be helped by having more internal guts), but that the glass on the outside of the phone cracked. A more rigid body would actually make the problem worse.

On the 24th, I'm 100% confident that within a few hours of the iPhone 4 release we'll see:

- YouTube videos of idiots buying the iPhone 4 then throwing them into the ground outside the place of purchase
- iFixit tearing one apart for one of their infamous teardowns
- The guys that did this test will redo it with a real phone and comment not only on the damage that ensued but also the remaining functionality of the iPhone 4
- More threads like this one bitching about the device
- More people buying the iPhone 4 because of said threads, teardowns, and YouTube videos

See how that works? Can we move along now?

I've dropped my phone like 20 times and it still works. Then again its not a touchscreen or Apple product.

Yah, that Dell Streak demo was almost painful to watch but... now I gotta wonder if someone will do that same thing with the iPhone 4 when it's released.

Or drop a Dell Streak from 3.5 feet a few times... I wonder. ;)

You forgot the about "Will It Blend" video.

Apple should put out a wrist strap like Nintendo did for the Wii. Surely more iPhones are going to see air time increase now that it's a full fledged "gaming" system/sixaxis/phone/controller/thing.

The iStrap?

You heard it here first folks.

If you drop something, and it breaks, that is your fault. Man up, take responsability for your actions and don't start complaining about how the product should have been able to withstand the drop. The company didn't drop your phone ... you did.

I was definitely annoyed that they didn't drop it. I was thinking how many times do they need to attack it with a pen in order to...oh wait its over damn.

In that case the company shouldn't claim that their device can't be broken by being dropped.
