gotta say it -- iPhone4 fail this morning

What bothers me about iPhone 4g is:
1. why cant apple include a MICRO-SD slot so you can put a cheap 32gb microsd card? I mean they charge $100 upgrade fee from 16gb to 32gb. a 32gb microsd doesn't cost $100 and it's Tiny. this is just greed from apple's side.

2.AT&T internet is now prty limited. 2gb bandwidth? with sprint + evo4g I can hve "unlimited" (well limited to 5gb) for $5 more per month and i can easily use up tht bandwidth by tethering it to my laptop.

3. Apple + Jobs think they are so magical & revolutionary. "Jobs to developers: Stick with the winning team" I mean, seriously, this arrogance is annoying.

4. Apple OS is just too closed compared to Android. I would much rather support the open Android.

5. AT&T is more expensive than Sprint.

Question Is:
Should I get the Evo 4G and switch to Sprint (my verizon contract is up) or wait until the HTC Scorpion comes out for Verizon?

I'm in a very similar boat right now. My contract is up and I am itching to get a new phone so that leaves me with the choices of HTC Incredible, HTC EVO, or the iPhone 4. Since I think AT&T is crap, the iPhone is pretty much out. I have been seeing a lot of stuff about new android phones coming to verizon in the next month so I am thinking about holding off.

I think Motorola Shadow is coming out next month but that's it I thought? The next set of HTC phones is coming out later on (like octoberish?)

I was out of contract too. I decided against verizon since a similar plan was going to run me about $80 more on verizon. and 60 more on ATT. I would rather not pay those ridiculous prices just to get 3 smart phones on a plan. No matter how good a phone is if the plan is stupid expensive its not worth it to me. Switching to sprint saved me $50 over my last plan and gave me more features.

I was trying to compare all of the plans last night and it looks like it would cost me $75/month for Verizon with a smartphone ($99 for the HTC Incredible), $75/month for AT&T ($199 for phone), or $75/month for Sprint ($199 phone). This is with 450 minutes on each carrier plus messaging.

Since most people I know have Verizon that means I am going to burn through the minutes on AT&T but with Sprint since I get unlimited mobile, I can just call everyone and not use any minutes for my family, I think. So really my only options are Sprint and Verizon and they are close to the same cost.

I think you are correct ReichStaG in saying that the Shadow is the one coming out next month, but it looks pretty interesting. It's like the EVO for Verizon.

Honestly, I'm thinking of getting an HTC EVO 4G because AT&T data plans suck. Thankfully I'm grandfathered into the unlimited plan, but still.

My main issue with switching to an HTC EVO is the fact that I bought quite a few apps for the iPhone and I don't feel like buying them again for the EVO. If there was an easy way to switch the apps I bought on my iPhone to an EVO, I'd switch.

That's a first for me: someone not willing to "switch" because they invested money in apps that apparently would require them to buy 'em again because it's a different platform.

/me adds that to the list... hrmmm...

Honestly, I didn't realize this at the time I bought an iPhone (two years ago). But, I've been thinking about it more and more, and being 'locked' into an iPhone is rather annoying in terms of apps. At least with android based phones you can switch phones and it has the same OS. If I buy an iPhone App, well, I can't switch. I'm gonna head to Sprint and take a look at the EVO.

True, an Android app should work on any Android device given it's running the version of Android necessary, and iPhone/iPod touch/iPad apps should do the same as long as the device matches the necessary requirements (i.e. can't use a compass navigational app on the iPhone 3G or iPod touchs since they don't have such hardware, only the 3GS does presently with the iPhone 4 soon to arrive as well), that sort of thing.

I'm still a holdout for Windows Phone 7 myself, so if I can snag an HTC HD2 at some point for a decent price I will since I know as soon as WP7 is finalized some bright creative coding wizard at XDA-Developers will drop a ROM bomb and make that HD2 sing... ;)

Well with the rumors about the HD3 the prices should start to come down on the HD2.

When I looked at changing to an android device or going with the new iPhone I really had to see an improvement over my 3G. Well compared to my 3G and compared to what devices I can get that are android based, I am definitely going iPhone 4. It's a vast improvement over my current device, it's familiar and I have some kick ass apps I don't want to re-buy. Am I blown away by the features, not really but at least they are being added in and you have to agree apple's implementation even closed is very good.

if not for the Iphone everyone would still be drooling over a Blackberry and thats a fact.

Nah...I had PC phones before the blackberry ever came out. Maybe Apple was jealous?

There's no doubt the iphone has done a lot for advancing the smart phone. They did pioneer a lot of things, especially the app store. But you can't really say none of it would exist without the iphone. It just wouldn't be as good. Same thing if Google wasn't pushing out android like they are.

As always... evolutionary, not revolutionary, standing on what's come before - more like stepping on it - to get to the next rung on the ladder.

That's what Apple does.

So, I've decided against the EVO. It'll end up costing me more money on Sprint than AT&T.

I'm liking my Evo a lot, but it definitely is an adjustment from my 3GS. After a year with the iPhone I'm extremely comfortable with its interface. I think Android is fantastic and will only get better with Froyo later this year, so I'm sticking with my Evo. One feature I absolutely LOVE is it's ability to turn off the accelerometer.

I still find it funny (and I pointed this out in another thread) that of all the stuff Jobs talked about in the presentation, he never actually talked about the phone. It was all "Look at this, great, look at that, amazing, etc etc" and I was still wondering "Ok, so, does it work any better as an actual phone yet?"

Let's face it: the focus by every manufacturer out there for the past decade has been to keep adding features on top of features on top of... well, you get the point. But the most amazing great insanely awesome statistic of all:

Cell phones still suck at the one thing they are supposed to do above and beyond everything else, and that's actually making phone calls.

Ok, Apple, you've given people exactly what you want them to have and not what they actually want, how about making a cell phone that works? Don't blame the networks, the carriers, etc. The phones themselves are half the equation...

I've heard this time and time again, however I must say, I completely disagree. I've had every iPhone since the first, and IMO they are excellent at making calls. I don't live in NYC so I don't suffer from hosed phone calls...end of that story. IMO, using an iPhone is the easiest way to make a phone call since my old Nokia brick phone.

What else do you want? Why is an iPhone bad at making phone calls?

The video calling is NOT a new feature, my old busted Nokia phone I bought in Hong Kong 7 years ago has the capability to do video calls. I love my Iphone but Apple is not innovating. Also can someone help me did they ONCE AGAIN not make a removable battery? Also did they forget to have the ability to delete those wonderful "apple produced apps"? I mean the internet is big and is mostly just people complaining about stuff, is Apple that closed off they do not fix the battery issue which is the number one complaint for years.

Why the need to change batteries? My 3GS battery has only degraded ever so slightly after a full years use. I can see the need if you want to put in a bigger battery... but IMO I don't think the majority of users would want a bigger battery if it protrudes from the phone.

Do you see iPhone's with custom firmware like CyanogenMod for android?

yes, pwnage tool is used to create and load custom ipsw's (firmwares). Then with cydia, Icy or RockApp, you can download and install any tweaks, plugins or 3rd party software you wish

Oh and with the upcoming iAds, my droid can AdBlock, can your iPhone do that? :D

yes, you've been able to since 2008

Wait, you're serious?!

yes, he's serious.... the hacking/modding/jailbreak community for the iphone/itouch is huge. One of the larger communities, ModMyI, has over 600K members

I Jailbroke my iPhone this afternoon. Played around with it for a few hours, and reverted back. I don't understand the obsession some people have with Jailbreaking the iPhone. The programs run slow, and there aren't any 'good' applications on Cydia besides customization of the iPhone UI, which after messing around with it just slows the iPhone down.

it depends on what you want to do with it.

If you're happy with the iphone as is, then it probably isn't something that you'd really need or want. I jailbreak mainly for multi-tasking support, the ability to download/upload files and tethering.

what programs were you using that ran slow? are you on an original iphone?

Okay, so maybe PDAnet is a 'good' app.... I was thinking of switching from my grandfathered unlimited plan to a 200MB plan, but now I'm reconsidering....

Edit: I have an iPhone 3G (not 3GS). What 'slow' is the replacement lock screen. It takes about 3-5 seconds for the lock screen to load a HTC-ish clock/weather display. This annoys me. I want my phone to be instant, especially if I just wanna see the time or weather.
