Both disk 2 & 3 are identical external 500GB WD hard drives hooked up USB. However I got a new hdd drive today and when I went to disk management disk 2 is showing up as 593GB. It should only be 465GB in a single partition, and no unallocated space, just like disk 3.

What's the deal, disk management detection bug or is that drive about to take a shit?

Maybe, but it's appeared as a 500/465GB for years. Now it magically remembers it's a 640?

It's strange I'll admit (I have a couple of ideas - but just guesses) ......but the only way to see for sure is to try formatting the unallocated space into a partition......it wont hurt anything.

.it wont hurt anything.

Does windows disk manager detect overlapping partitions?

Is this the correct size for 640GB?

Edit: Hmm, should be 596 GiB.

Perhaps Windows has re-enumerated the drives, and your new one (640GB raw capacity) has now been designated Disk 2 ?

I think it's blatantly obvious to backup or move any data from the drive before trying any format.........but figured I'd better mention it before I get blamed for anything. :)

Oh.....why don't you load up a Linux live distro, and mount the drive to see what IT says.......or any other drive utility (ultimate boot cd has a bunch) just to see if it matches what windows reports.

i have the same thing with a few disks

2 or 3 1tb drives i have show up as 1.5tb however if you try and expand the partition it kicks up an error ,but still expands it in disk management

however it will not show up as 1.5tb in my computer
