Google Compares Apple to 'Big Brother' From Iconic 1984 Ad

It's pretty true, ironically enough. Apple wants to be the one company to rule them all. They want to control your OS, your hardware, your phone, etc. They are not at all about playing with others. They've been this way for quite some time, but nobody gave a shit because they were just a small computer company that nearly went bankrupt. Now they are a major player in the consumer electronics market and more and more people are waking up to the fact that they are an extremely controlling corp.

Apple was only ever about openness for a short while at the beginning when Woz was still doing the hardware design. They've been controlling like this for many years, it is just now starting to have an effect on more people.

I guess all the conciliatory chatter and smiles at the Jobs-Schmidt coffee break was bunkum, given the cheap histrionics lately. Someone should shop that photo so they're aiming guns at one another under the table.

Oh, it's on now, bitches... ;)

"If Google did not act, we faced a Draconian future where one man, one company, one device, one carrier would be our only choice," Gundotra said. "That's a future we don't want."

That's what I've been saying.

Interesting quote from Google. Someone there take irony lessons?

Exactly. When guys say stuff like this do they REALLY not know what they are saying? Do they think everyone is so stupid that no one sees the hypocrisy? I just don't see how these barbs are all that useful.

I think limited choice can actually be a good thing sometimes.
The other day I went to the store to look at some GPS devices for driving. I saw Tomtom, Magellan, Garmin. When you have a series-100, series-200, series-300, ... series-1600, etc. all with very similar features buried under tons of marketing catchphrases, it becomes hard to compare and contrast. I left the store feeling more confused than I went in.

If any one of those companies had a clear line of products without me thinking I have to research 50 different models, I probably would have bought something.

A lot of truth to this. It's been key to Apple's and Microsoft's sucess as well. Choice and flexibility and be very confusing unless you know EXACTLY what you want and are doing.

I've been comparing Apple to Big Brother for over a decade now. Apple turned into what it railed against, and that's just one of the reasons why I will never purchase any of Apple's offerings: the blatant hypocrisy.

Steve Jobs can now go about his day smelling his own farts.

Google is just about as much big brother as Apple is, but I give Apple more crap for having cops bust down peoples doors and shit. Additionally, I think I trust Microsoft more than either of them, if that says anything about those two.

Apple seems to be gunning for all the enemies they can get. Google, Adobe, and theres always been MS. Whos next?

Meh, the people I know with Android phones are into Google as much as Apple fanboys. I never hear anyone say something like "I just want the best phone regardless of what it's running."

Fuck, google are just as bad if not worse than apple for spying on ya, just this week I had to uninstall shit that was left over from some of googles apps that were on my puter before i uninstalled them, only to find out that not everything got uninstalled, and that something was constantly connecting to the net to "update" software that wasnt even on my pc anymore.

Google cant say shit to anyone regarding Big Brother as they are the BIGGEST BROTHER.

Right, so if you know the neighbor stole your PC you're cool with that.. just let it slide. No need to involve the police.

I think if people had used Adobe products on the OSX platform they'd have a bit better perspective on why Apple and Adobe are squared off. I only use OSX about half the time, but damn if I didn't despise Adobe LONG before all the fuss got started. It's like they came up with this awesome wrapper to make any app run on any platform. Sure, it runs like shit but it mostly works. Battery life and the occasional crash aren't that big a thing, right?

I don't trust google either. I'm steering clear of this "android" thing (for now until more 3rd parties use it on their phones) and chrome OS.

What? A ton of 3rd parties are using Android, and its open source. Android certainly isn't proprietary or locked down at all. And if you don't trust the vendor's builds, install a custom rom.

Google is desperate for your information. Apple wants to tell you what you can and can't do with something you paid for. Not really the same thing. Not saying Google is better or anything, just saying this isn't a pot calling the kettle black situation.

Google = Share EVERYTHING, no secrets.

Apple = Total Lockdown, you did not buy my product, you are leasing it.

How is that the same as Gizmodo buying a lost iPhone prototype?

Its hard to be neutral in a situation like that. The operating system on the phone is the most important part. It can have all the best hardware in the world but if you dont like the platform you wont want the phone.

I like how Google act like if it wasn't for them, Apple would dominate. Someone needs to introduce them to this company called Microsoft on the PC side, and HTC, Nokia, Blackberry, and Motorola on the phone side.

We appreciate your service, Google, but it wasn't all you.

using OSX = using Adobe product

Thats why OSX had built-in PDF abilities so early. Which was a huge plus back then. Still nice today though, especially if you have no Internet access.

All giant companies have giant agendas, its just a fact, you do not become a giant company by sitting around and waiting for the money to come

Competition breeds the best in everything and the worst in everybody, we have tons of awesome phones and devices and a bunch of back talking slimy execs trying to fuck each other.

Thats why I buy my oil from Wal Mart......

I just want the best phone regardless of what it's running.... :D

And this is true... next phone I buy could be either a BB, iPhone or an Android powered unit. I will buy the one I like best after trying one of each out. :p

P.S. All of the Apple fanbois I know wouldn't even THINK of buying anything besides an iPhone... the rest of the phones in the world are junk, PC's are junk, every other device besides what Apple makes is junk!!

LOL @ them... brainwashed people. :)

Do you think they smell like iPads?:D

Yes, like blended iPads.

Pot, kettle, black.
Nailed.

I don't trust google either. I'm steering clear of this "android" thing (for now until more 3rd parties use it on their phones) and chrome OS.

MORE third parties? Google makes one phone, the mildly popular Nexus One. Who else makes Android phones? HTC, LG, Samsung, Garmin, Motorola, Sony, and innumerable smaller manufactures running their own hardware. Who else are you waiting for? Apple?

It sounds to me like some people here can't like Google solely because they're big. It's an awful mindset to be in.

Exactly. When guys say stuff like this do they REALLY not know what they are saying? Do they think everyone is so stupid that no one sees the hypocrisy? I just don't see how these barbs are all that useful.

Hypocrisy? Seriously? Google vs Apple? Google is incredibly open, while Apple makes PRC look like a congregation of hippies.

Being cautious of Google's relative altruism is entirely rational. Comparing Apple's stifling of innovation by buying up patents and their EXTREME monopolist business practices to Google's potential for misuse represents very poor judgement.

I think limited choice can actually be a good thing sometimes.

Don't you feel that having too many choices is better than not having any? Being a geek, I love researching an entire field of products once I need to choose the one that best fits my needs, but I understand that doesn't float everyone's boat. The internet and technical support at any of these companies are probably your best bet for finding which ones are inferior and which one has the features you need and the features you didn't know you wanted.

Meh, the people I know with Android phones are into Google as much as Apple fanboys. I never hear anyone say something like "I just want the best phone regardless of what it's running."

I'm not much of an Android fanboy, coming from Windows Mobile since... forever. But I feel many people peddling Android just want anything but Apple to succeed. I don't want to give money to Apple anymore than I want to give money for oil to the OPEC nations.

...I only use OSX about half the time, but damn if I didn't despise Adobe LONG before all the fuss got started. It's like they came up with this awesome wrapper to make any app run on any platform. Flash is awful, but comparing Flash to the rest of the Adobe line is laughable. The fact that Apple has the power to kill a competitors product at any time and no rules set in stone to prevent this is the bane of Adobe's existance. Why spend millions making amazing Adobe products for the iPad and iPhone when Apple can approve them one week, then replace it with their own and kill Adobe products next week? Just the threat of this isn't what is awful. What is awful is that Apple actually does this kind of crap.

Isn't it the goal of every American company to become a legalized monopoly?

WTF is a "legalized monopoly"?

Being a monopoly is not illegal, in and of itself. Saying "legalized monopoly" makes it sound like some gubbamint agency gave it their stamp of approval or something.

People get that shit mixed up as much as the word "hacker" automagically implies something illegal going on. It's bad enough our language(s) are fucked up as much as they are but, geez people, pay attention to the details, the semantics... :p

A lot of truth to this. It's been key to Apple's and Microsoft's sucess as well. Choice and flexibility and be very confusing unless you know EXACTLY what you want and are doing.
XP had two basic versions (Home and Pro).
Vista introduced what, like 7???

OS X really just has one for consumers to choose from.

Yes, "simplicity" means you pass ass-big money (Think of everyone having to pay for the features of 7 Ultimate, even though only 98% of the world is fine with Home Premium).

at least google is the lesser of the two evils.
QFT.
I'd take Google any day of the week over Apple. Google at least pretends to care about you, whereas Apple would take a shit on your front porch and point and laugh at you cleaning it up.

Microsoft has, for a few years now, been my most respected tech company. Doing Zune HD, Natal, and Windows 7 right helped that. Being the bigger man and not stooping to Apple's commercial level helped that. Microsoft finally woke up, smelled the coffee, and got back to basics: what's the consumer want? Time Google and Apple did the same.

Isn't it the goal of every American company to become a legalized monopoly?

It's also not a monopoly if nobody is willing to compete with them. Or if your products are so freaking good that nobody can top them.
Look at iPod in the early days. Just because they produced the best DAP on the market that everyone wanted, doesn't mean they had a monopoly. It means nobody else was producing stuff that competed with it. Until the Zune HD anyway :p

Google is much more 'Big Brothery' than Apple so this is just silly catchphrase news bs'ing. They want to know *everything* you do, their whole business is based on that, they just don't care about what it is you do as long as they're able to log it.

Apple is like the government in 1984 as a whole. They want to tell you what to think, what to use, what content you should be allowed to view but don't gather every bit of information they can about you.

It's funny after all the hate it's gotten over the years MS is looking like the best choice out of the three as far as having flexibility and choice along with privacy.

WTF is a "legalized monopoly"?
Governments are legalized monopolies. In many places, you can only have your "choice" of one cable company, thanks to city/county granted monopolies. AT&T had a monopoly on phone service granted by the federal government. In the late 1800s, the Southern Pacific railroad was granted a 30-year monopoly by the state of California.

It is, in fact, the only way to have a "real" monopoly: government fiat.

Quoted from link:
In March The New York Times reported that Steve Jobs feels Google betrayed Apple by partnering with hardware manufacturers to make cell phones that resemble the iPhone. Jobs also allegedly let his feelings be known to employees at a company meeting in January.

"We did not enter the search business. They entered the phone business," Jobs reportedly said. "Make no mistake, Google wants to kill the iPhone. We won't let them."

Jeez Jobs, quit your whining and either build a better, more innovative product than the current android based phones (and no, i dont think the iPhone 4G is gonna do it), go open source (ya, right, like that would EVER happen), or get the hell outta the race and let the big boys play.

Despite the companies differences and the growing rivalry, Jobs was spotted having coffee in public with Schmidt back in March. The two were seen having a chat at a cafe in Palo Alto, Calif.

God how I would have loved to be a fly on THAT wall!!!

So.. our only phone choices in this world are iPhones and Nexus?
Odd... I could have sworn that a number of other companies that make cell phones......... [/sarcasm]
