I signed up for a Sans network forensics course and found out they're giving out
free netbooks (pre-loaded with tools.) I realize free is subjective as i'm paying for the course.

My question is this, what's the best freebie anyone here's got out of a class?
Most of the courses i've taken give a free copy of an os, or at best a bag or something, but never a netbook.

I got a Dell netbook from SANS last summer. I didn't realize they were having that offer until after I signed up. Nice!

im actually looking at going to some SANS stuff this fall for training.
Were these the smaller classes or like the 5day boot camps?

They usually only give the stuff like netbooks away for taking their online classes. Considering they charge the same or nearly the same as the live classes, I'd definitely take the live class over the netbook. I took 508 via the online method last year and didn't find it nearly as good as taking an actual class where you can interact with the instructors. IMO, one of the best thing about SANS is the really good instructors they've got and recordings and email just are not the same.

I just got back from Security West and saw the newer online interface. It is much better than the old interface, but I believe only certain classes are using that interface now.

MSDNAA (non-tangible freebies count, right?), even if I just take one course at the local university that's computer related, though you need to declare yourself as EE/CS/CE major beforehand.

I also agree that SANS in-person is the better format. Not only do you have awesome instructors, but you have classmates that you can bounce ideas off of, etc. I took 503 online and found myself wishing I would have done another live event. I did 502 at SANS Rocky Mountain in '08 and got much more from that.
