A new study claims that technology is linked to happiness. You know what that means? All of us should be happy 24/7 because we are surrounded by technology.

There are positive links between access to technology and feelings of well-being, a study claims. BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, analyzed the results of a survey of 35,000 people around the world. Access to communication devices was found to be the most valued.

Whenever this topic comes up, the one quote that comes to mind instantly is the the line in the book/movie "Contact" by the character Palmer Joss:

"Is the world fundamentally a better place because of science and technology? We shop at home, we surf the Web... at the same time, we feel emptier, lonelier and more cut off from each other than at any other time in human history..."

It's the words of Carl Sagan, of course, the author of the novel the movie is based on but, is there really anything more accurate? Has anything really changed?

Not that I can tell, and I think it's getting worse.

I feel happy, I feel happy, I fee..*thud*
Ah, thank you very much.
Not at all. See you on Thursday.
Right.

Hard to argue with this:
It found that women in developing countries, and people of both sexes with low incomes or poor education, were most influenced emotionally by their access to technology.
That's the majority of the population right there.

Slightly misleading headline on [H] because it implies that *all* technology makes you 'happier' just by being there when the real point of the article is that basic connectivity technology makes people happier. So do gaming computers, PMPs, game consoles, flat screen TVs and surround sound make people 'happier'? No, but things that allow basic social connection - mainly cell phones in these places - when not much existed prior does. I imagine the same thing would have been found in America when landline telephone technology was being rolled out.

I know if I weren't surrounded by technology every day at work and at home, I'd be out pistol whipping kittens. Hmm...maybe it is actually keeping me from true happiness.

I condensed the article into two lines:

1) Poverty and the Internet.

2) Women enjoy social networking.

Technology really DOES make you happy!

ROFL OMGBBQ!!!111 ....

Technology created this post, do you feel happy about it now?

When Technology works, it keeps average joe happy like material objects do.
When Technology fails, it pisses off average joe, makes me happy that fixing it pays my bills, and makes me sad because I spend too much time fixing it.

Fragging zombies and demons on my PC makes me happy. I guess they could be partly right at least.

it all boils down to materialism and feelings of pleasure, not happiness.

this is semi not unembarrasing

Technology distracted me from noticing how miserable I am.

Until this article came along anyway. Damn you Internet!

If I could own certain technology without the government trampling on my rights I would be very happy.

Gorram it Reagan, your FOPA '86 screwed us all.

VIVA LA M134!
