As if that whole artificial cloud thing we told you about yesterday wasn’t enough, Bill Gates is funding an additional 78 humanitarian projects, bringing the total number of projects up to three hundred and forty.

Through its grants, the five-year, $100 million initiative aims to foster "creative projects that show great promise to improve the health of people in the developing world," and as part of the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative is supported by the Gates Foundation.

While I'm against these projects as they don't help with the fundamental problems plaguing these countries it's getting harder to hate that guy.

Bill Gates has always struck me as a guy who had a lot of power and money but wasn't a giant douche. Microsoft on the other hand as a company isn't nearly as non doucheie...

Comparison: Bobby Kotick vs. Bill Gates, one is a dork who though rich isn't insulting and is enthusiastic about his ideas. The other, is pretty much a pile of shit with a mouth that spews what it is... shit...

he is my hero. The number of lives he will save wit his vaccination initiative alone is amazing

The road to hell is paved with good eugenics... I mean intentions. Enjoy the devolution I mean de-population.

Bill Gates has long been a leading philanthropist. He has a very, very long history of making huge donations to charity, researching needs and creating new charities to fill them. He is also interested in fixing problems long term and not just doing stop gap measures as people might assume. However, there are limits to what can be done in many instances. You might be able to provide humanitarian aid to a third world country, but it is impossible to try and stop the violence altogether. People assume Bill Gates is evil because he was trying to out compete other busineses, but that is the way business works. It is ridiculous to have a business plan that says, "we want to share the market". In his personal life, he spends just as much time trying to put the money he has made to good use around the world helping people. It was also a major focus for the company and its employees also. Microsoft itself is a leading contributor to charities around the world.

Things are almost always more than the seem.

I wonder if Bill Gates could finance a study to find out why people making Apple products in China keep killing themselves? :D

Seriously though, Bill Gates has consistant worked to better people's lives but unfortunately people bought into his competitors attempt to paint him as the leader of the "Evil Empire of Microsoft."

Bill Gates at TED2010 said:
First we got population. The world today has 6.8 billion people. That's headed up to about 9 billion. Now if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we lower that by perhaps 10 or 15 percent.

Don't know why people consider him a hero. Last time I checked hero's helped people, not killed them.

 Welcome to the land of not understanding.

Mother A has 6 kids. Mother B has 1 kid. Clearly, Mother B should be sent to jail for mass infanticide.

There is an indirect correlation between quality of life and birth rate. Those countries with the best economies and health care (including vaccination rates) have the lowest birth rates. It's about giving women more options than producing sick mouths to feed in refugee camps.

I can't believe he was serious. Miscomunication of sarcasm, perhaps?

Next time maybe you should do a bit more research before spouting your mouth off. It has been proven that the healthier a community is, the lower the birth rate is. If the child mortality rate is high, a mom will have 5 or 6 kids so she will have a higher chance of 1 or 2 of them surviving. Over time this concept leads to overpopulation because the birth rate exceeds the mortality rate. If a mom has a reasonable assumption her kids will likely live to be adults, she will have less children to begin with.

I can't believe what I just saw.

Whoever expressed those views and manipulated the TED talk is out of his mind. Let's go to the basement and get tin foil hats out of his mind.

+1 -- that video is taken completely out of even the small context that was shown in the clips.

First off Gates was referring to the fact (as others have stated) with better health care there are far more options for families. Children are more likely to grow up strong and healthy and be able to provide for the family. There will be more birth control options so that rampant promiscuity will not also lead to rampant population growth. Another huge factor is education and getting information out which is why he mentions TV as a good thing. He is referring to mass communication and the ability to address the people to give them the information they need to improve their lives. Gates is also not promoting killing people or wanting to kill people, he just wants better quality of life for everyone and realizes that with rampant population growth it will be too hard to keep improving the quality of life.

Really, some people need to do more research before taking a few clips and trying to form an agenda out of it.
