Mac gamers who have been eager for Valve to port over its Steam game distribution software to OS X now have a date to look forward to. Valve on Thursday finally set Wednesday, May 12, as the day when the software will be made available to the general public.

Valve has been testing the Mac version of its Steam client in a private beta since the end of March. Screenshots and videos of the pre-release software began leaking out just a few weeks later.

As mentioned in previous coverage, the software promises to bring the same digital distribution for games that PC users have been taking advantage of since Valve launched the service back in late 2003. It will also add a feature called Steam Play that will let gamers play a purchased title on both the Windows and Mac--that is, if the game is available on both platforms.

Sorry if this has already been posted.

I was going to say wrong forum.

PC Gaming forum...

Also if you want to look up mac games go back like 3 years in this forum

So ya... kinda harsh but meh

So what kinds of games will Mac Steam have? Will it serve as another source for people to buy apps so they don't have to pay apple? (I don't use mac products and have no idea how the whole app marketplace is structured.) Will this serve as more of a "casual games" and apps outlet rather than one for high end PC games? Will Steam be in charge of making a game mac compatible or will the developers? Where can I buy stock in Valve? (you can't, it's a private company) I have so many questions!

Just source engine based. thats it.

All Valve Source games
CSS
Portal
TF2
HL2
L4D
L4D2
DOD:S

I would say by the end of the year all the Indie games will be probably ported but thats up to the Devs. I imagine long term you'll see a lot of Highend and Casual games. Same as the PC steam.

Sorry I meant to post this in General Gaming.

Well, will mac users be able to play PC users online? If they can, it seems like this thread wouldn't be too out of place inside the PC gaming sub forum.

Valve has said that Mac users will be able to play games like TF2 along with PC gamers. I don't know if cross platform functionality will come to other games, but this is a start.

Hopefully Valve requires the publishers to not have a separate purchase for each platform. Also, they need to bring out the Linux client.

Valve's implemented what they call "Steam Play", which allows for crossplatform games to be treated as one purchase. I assume this feature is going to be available for third-party software as well (otherwise they wouldn't have bothered giving it a fancy name, right?)

I wonder if games like Multiwinia and Quake III will have their Mac versions on Steam. I really hope so...

Ha - I already forgot about this since reading about it again like 2 days ago...

This would explain why I was forced into the new interface on my windows copy. Can't have the Mac people whining about the old-school simple interface.

I think its great that I will be able to mow down people on Macs. In game of course :D

lol so... how do they plan on using secondary fire with only one mouse button? :D

this is pretty cool though :) I hope it works out well for them.

I see this as beeing a good thing for both Mac and PC users in that Mac's get technology that's leveraged from the PC and PC's get a little be market share all around in the PC investment, just a thought, I would imagine that the code for both platforms is quite similar except for the API thunking.

At any rate, cool for Mac gamers, not something that would move a hardcore PC gamer to the Mac more than likely but that's not the point.

Plus, we get more people on the PC vs. console debate :D You KNOW how mac zealots can argue!

Really though, do we need to go down that route? I think that it's pretty clear just from a "the best of what's possible" that the PC is THE platform. But that comes with cost. Then down from the list as Mac. Honestly, current gen console hardware is SO dated now that even basic PC graphics are competing with consoles these days and there there are some pretty powerful Mac setups out there these days. The of course the consoles come in last in this department.

This isn't to slam consoles, its just that this gen is long in the tooth and it would be nice to get that next big console push as to get PC games more in line with what the hardware is TRULY capable of, though there are nice to see games come along still for the PC with some spice, like Metro 2033 or Just Cause 2. There seems to be a decent amount of PC games out there and I guess well see some Mac games come along but I don't really know just how a big deal. In and of itself it's a decent deal on its own, as Valve is considered one of the best in the game businesses, and I agree, and Steam for the Mac gives the Mac a game marketplace, which Steam is for me, I really like to buy my stuff on Steam though you find so many deals on physical discs, that's how I got JC2, fortunately it gets put into my Steam games so I don't need the disc to play, it uses Steams DRM and is seamless.

Ha now its

Shampoo and Conditioner vs Shower Gel!

Conditioner is better, it makes the hair silky and smooth!

Maybe Apple users will wake up when they get roflpwned by right-click

Though I have to say if you know what u are doing right-click can be worked around but not for the average player

That's fine. Mac users aren't the average type.

What about sourcemods support ? I'd really like to have some mac users join me in Goldeneye Source, you don't even need a second mouse button for that game :)

I don't see why valve would use different file formats than they currently do. I'd bet money that mods will work fine on it.

Wait, hang on...

The source games are coming to Mac? I take it they're writing some kind of OpenGL renderer for the source engine? Does this mean we get MAC vs PC play online, oh please god tell me I get to whoop some MAC users online :)
