If you're using a custom DNS server like OpenDNS do you need to change your DNS settings in the operating system if you changed them in the router?

Nope, unless you use a static ip on the computer. Also the new dns isn't instant, you need to wait till the dhcp lease expires or you repair or reconnect the connection.

Usually just the router...it varies from router to router. But what I usually do is find a spot in the routers web admin to specify your own DNS servers, instead of letting it obtain them from the ISP. This way the router does its own DNS forwarding to whatever you specify in there..so clients, when you do an IPCONFIG /ALL, will show the routers IP as the DNS server. Also, and better yet, many routers allow you to customize their DHCP service and plug in your own DNS servers. This way when you do an IPCONFIG /ALL at clients, you'll see your custom DNS servers listed instead of the routers LAN IP. I prefer this approach, as the workstations query the DNS servers directly instead of the router which then itself has to turn around and query. Routers generally are lowered powered, so I'd rather bypass them..they're just 1 more hop. And they don't cache DNS very well (home grade ones)
