Steam interface update

Despise change for no benefit except a tacky web 2.0 gradients/glossy button "update". If it ain't broke and so on. It' not the biggest deal, but forcing us to use this cluttered, messy crap when all steam's really about is keeping your game launchers in one place is a bit daft.

See above. I have 7 and like it fine, your conjecture amounts to nothing more than a swing and a miss. My objection with this is that it is awful. For no reason. No reason for it to be shit, but they went ahead and did it anyway. I don't understand why they went from having a legible, informative store tab, a legible, well-laid out games tab and a useful overlay and community page to the same thing with extra clutter, big oul' buttons and a visual overhaul by a seventeen year old kid on a work placement is of benefit to anyone.

Someone tell me what this offers that Steam didn't already, and do your best to keep your embarassing Ragenrok/brucedeluxe-style keyboard-mashing to the minimum. Some real, considered, well-articulated reasons, if you've any.

Wow man. If you can't deal with the new interface I think there's something else going on here.

Here's a challenge: Become fluent enough with the new interface to launch your games, purchase new games, and chat with friends.

Can't do that? I think there's something else wrong aside from this interface.

Hm, looks like all of my games have icons except for Portal Prelude which is a mod.

Please enlighten me as to how the Store page has changed at all except for the color scheme. It looks EXACTLY the same to me. Also, list view + tiny icons is EXACTLY the same as the old GUI.

Don't like it? Use Direct2Drive instead. Or, hey, go pay Microsoft a subscription fee to get the same service.

If you guys don't like the new interface then just use list view and turn off the icons, easy.

As it stands the new UI is miles better than the old one. Being able to add custom categories and such is so useful.

BUT BUT THEY ADDED FEATURES AND LEFT THE OLD ONES IN AS ALTERNATIVES SO I HAVE TO LIVE WITH KNOWING THOSE NEW FEATURES ARE IN AND THAT THE STEAM I KNEW AND LOVE IS GONE FOREVER BAAAAWWWWWWWW

My number one complaint right now is having to click "View" to switch between large and small mode on the games list. Before there was just an arrow you clicked to switch back and forth, they turned one click into two clicks. It sounds anal, but it's honestly pissing me off.

I don't really like change when I'm forced to it but sometimes you don't have a choice hah. I'm sure it will grow on me but it definitely seems less clunky and a bit quicker. I'm indifferent on it for now.

Yeah I already miss the arrows. I bet within a few days they update it again and put them back in or some alternative.

I'm away from my gaming rig for a week, so could someone tell me if you can still change your server location for purchases/downloads.

I tried this GUI when it was in beta but switched back when I couldn't find the download server location option (it was BC2 release day and I needed to switch to a faster server since the one closest to me was swamped).

Yes you can.

Of course. Why would that option be removed?

A lot of stuff was removed when this thing went Beta and they added some of back rather promptly after many complaints and fixed some of the horrible horrible UI issues after complaints. When the Beta first hit it was unusable, now I like it.

The actual design seems a bit generic over all to me, but it does look good. And the actual layout changes are very nice. I wish the sound for receiving messages hadnt changed though.

Been using the new UI since the Beta, but I find the text blurry and hard to read. I did mess around with file to change the fonts but still hard to read over the old version

I dislike the way you can't scale the window too

It is a little bloated and disorganised, but overall I've got used to it and quite like it.

An option to still use the old version would have been welcome for those that detest it, but I guess Valve don't want to support the old version anymore.

Nope, it looks gay and stinky. There's something wrong with the people that don't find it objectionable.

And I thought the XP defense force was bad.....

Both objectively and subjectively the design is awful, that can't be disputed, and as far as features go being able to list your games as massive glossy buttons or launch a game by right-clicking the tray icon doesn't really warrant an overhaul of this scale. Hey, but now you can read some blurb about that game you've owned for the last six years before launching it! That's awesome and I'm not a retard for thinking it's good, let alone necessary. I swear.

The people who like change simply for change's sake are as bad as those that object to it. There needs to be a good reason, and this update lacks one. It's a step backwards. It's more comparable to someone on XP objecting to Microsoft's new OS being NT, but with vista's glossy interface.

I think you need to look up what those words mean before using them. You can't really tell someone else what they subjectively think.

Take a step back and just look at what you're getting worked up over. This is really a laugh.

Are you one of those people that refuses to upgrade to Windows Vista/7 because you love the shitty taskbar and GUI style of Windows XP and can't handle change well? If you are then I understand why you don't like this latest Steam GUI. I looked at all of your screenshots and was left scratching my head wondering what the fuck you were crying about.

The mini list option is available if you are able to wipe the tears away from your face long enough to find it.

QFTFT! :D
I've been loving the interface since the beta!

Been using it since beta here. Hated it first day, used to it now. Its perfectly fine. Im really amazed that people really are getting their panties in such a big wad over something so trivial.

I'm curious to see what sort of objective metrics he believes exists for UI design. If something has the potential to be evaluated objectively, then it stands to reason it must have certain well-defined metrics upon which it can be comparatively evaluated, yeah?

I'm intensely curious to hear what he believes those metrics are. (Is "gayness" one of them?)

gayness is indeed one of them. the new UI is 14 gays. it also ranks 3 on the unicorn scale.

I have been using the beta version for about a month now and there is nothing wrong with it. People just love to bitch about change. Look at the people who still btich about Win7/DX10/DX11.

Funnctionality is mostly the same, there's enough customization options to make it behave a lot like the old steam anyway. The listview with icons is really nice for when you've got 100's of games and need to find what you want, makes it feel a lot more like the traditional steam.

The old steam was really ugly though, it hadn't been overhauled for ages. Once of the best changes they made actually now I think about it is the steam overlay when you're in games, that's really nice now.

Don't attribute any meaning to my posts, I'm not getting worked up. I swear a lot because I have trouble articulating my thoughts adequately OHOHO. Idiolects, idioms and idiocy.

I know what they both mean. My point was that objectively it's shit as it adds nothing and removes the option to stay with what worked originally anyway all whilst looking like some half-dicked custom skin made by a kid with a cracked copy of Photoshop, and subjectively meaning in my opinion.
;)

I also said stinky.

I'm pretty sure you can't go back to the old version because they abandoned the IE render engine in favor of the one used in Firefox.

There's already 1 major design/engineering decision which is a huge upgrade. So your "objective" metric is false. I very much doubt a relatively small company such as Valve would waste time doing pointless upgrades, which is probably why they haven't updated their client until now.

And anyone who is still using "gay" connotatively as an insult is rather juvenile, or just plain bigotry against our GLBT friends.

New rendering engine is webkit which is used in Chrome and Safari.

You must have joined pretty late in the beta because early on it was UNUSABLE. When the beta first hit it was probably one of the worst GUIs I've ever seen but they've cleaned it up A LOT since then made it better than the old one.

Colour you self-righteous. I guess facetiousness, fatuousness and intentional peurility escape you often.

The move from IE is a good one and I am very grateful for it, so yes there is a benefit to the update, but the argument that "I doubt Valve would waste time doing pointless upgrades" argument is a bit of a fallacious line of thinking. People make mistakes no matter the size of their company, and as far as misguided updates go Valve's one of the market leaders.

Been using it for a month and change, can't complain. They've put in numerous changes so that the functionality and navigational structure mirrors the old UI for the most part.

I understand how some people might not love it, but there sure is a strangely abundant amount of vitriol here.

There is much to be said for minimalism and consistency. Especially when the change is forced. There a A LOT of people that don't like the "web 2.0" look. For a change like this, having an old style skin available from the get-go is common sense. I'm actually shocked Valve didn't include a "classic steam" skin.

If you are getting poor font rendering: Restart your Steam client and go into setting and choose the BETA. When it reloads there will be an option under the Interface tab in the Settings box to disable Direct Write. This will make your fonts clear again.

Exactly. Old Steam was a disaster. The new UI, which I've used since day 1 of beta, is an improvement in every way. Navigation, customizability, so much better than before. The only thing I'd want to add is a text box in the Library so I could launch a game by typing in part of its name, a la Spotlight/Windows Search/iTunes/etc etc, but I'll take favorites+grid view as well.

I'm surprised people are this pissed off over the changes. There are a lot of new features in the new Steam, like better game stats, an improved in-game engine, a download manager and a proper HTML rendering engine. Most of this stuff simply couldn't be shoehorned into the old interface.

I've been using the beta for months and have been loving it. The only thing I really wish they'd do is let me assign custom grid graphics for non-Steam games.

Some of us would still be using Windows 3.1 if the level of outrage over a new interface is any indication.

It's the same except it looks shitty and adds a few new redundant game library listing views. Even the interface of the store is all kinds of fucked-up cluttered. How is it an improvement in every way when it still uses the store/library/media/community tab system, same as always? It uses a different engine at long last, but the steps back with the design almost negate this.

Sycophants. Valve aren't such hot shit, time to face up to it.

I have given the new interface a go. i was in the beta for a few weeks. I then changed back and honestly, i am not a fan of it. I hope it grows on me as now i am forced to use it.

Was going to reply to your other stuff, but calling anyone that disagrees with you an ass-kisser isn't going to help you. :)

For the people saying that the game icons aren't showing up, mine didn't show up instantly after launching the new client. I have ~174 games in my list and it took a few minutes for them all to appear (Steam was downloading them one or a few at a time rather than them all showing up at once).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder yada yada yada. I actually like it... it's just going to take me a day or two to get used to it. I guess I should have installed the beta.
