PS2 Games On 1080P Or Get PS3 60GB To Upscale?

I already own a 40GB PS3 but want backwards compatability. I heard somewhere that the PS3 upscaled image looks better than the PS2. I was wondering though is it worth it to buy a 60GB PS3 off ebay or buy a PS2. My main concern is that the image from the PS2 will look horrible on my 1080P Samsung LCD.

It really depends on your TV. My TV has a pretty decent scaler built in, so either one looks good. But, if your TV does a terrible job scaling, then yes, you would want the 60GB ps3.

It's not going to look "horrible." It should be a slightly better version than the original - think of an upscaled DVD vs. one not upscaled on the same high-end TV.

In my area, you can grab an used PS2 slim w/component cables for ~$60 +tax. For that price, I'd just grab the PS2 and test it out.

as far as the PS3 => PS2 stuff is concerned,

I can tell you right now that it doesn't look great. It will look 'ok' on games that supported widescreen and 480p, and it will look 'garbagey' on the 480i non-widescreen games.

I'd also advise against stretching the picture to fit the screen, and play it in pillarbox mode.

So should I buy a new 60GB PS3 (When I already have a 40) or just buy a PS2?

You could try an emulator and play your ps2 disks on your computer. Unless you need to own the ps2 hardware to legally play it on an emulator... If that is the case buy the ps2 and then use an emulator if it looks like crap on your tv.

Like what others are saying, it's nice to have...but nothing to go out of your way for. It makes some older games look a little less pixelated, but it's not a world of difference. There's a "smoothing" feature in there, too...but it just tends to make textures blurry. I'd probably rather have pixelation.
One really annoying thing about the upscaler it is that it'll either fill your screen (stretch the picture) or it'll pillarbox your image to the point that it's actually a little TOO squished (3:3 instead of 4:3).
For non widescreen PS2 games I turn off the upscaler.

I personally would go with the PS2 w/ component cables route. Last I tried, when playing PS2 games on a PS3, the image is blurred and it sort of washes out some finer details. Sure, going the PS2 route, you will have to endure aliasing, but paying extra for a BC PS3 is not worth the "benefit" of blurring the image to hide aliasing.

I have both machines hooked up to a Samsung DLP 60". Honestly, the visual difference isn't great enough to rebuy a PS3 - unless you really want the convenience of having a single system connected via HDMI, and not having to worry about Memory Cards. (Having virtual memory cards sit on the PS3 is great!). The only reason I still have the PS2 is for DDR (no way to plug them into the PS3).

Games on the PS2 that were meant to run at ws and in HD (like GT4) look pretty good when set. And the older games look like older games on newer monitors - kinda like when I go to play an old PC game.

Well my HDTV is a 2009 Samsung LN40B630 120Hz LCD

I have that TV, except I have the 46. The few PS2 games I've played look fine. I mean, it's clearly a PS2 game and not a PS3, but I don't believe it makes the game look any worse.

EDIT:
The games I've played were either downloaded from PSN or PS2 games -- both played on a 60GB PS3.

No getting a working 60Gb would require you buy it used ($300 average I think) with iffy warranty.

Get one of the newer Ps2's as somebody mentioned that have HD out.

One of the major reasons, in my opinion, for getting a fat PS3 w/ BC is for being able to use the Dual Shock 3. Unless of course there is a wireless controller for PS2 that is just as good.

they do look better on the PS3 not as jaggy but it depends on the game it seems.

Also you would need to buy the PS2 memory card reader for the PS3 so you can transfer Ps2 saves to it which equally some more money.

if you have a high end computer they have PS2 emulators that can turn a PS2 game to 1080p.......Looks quite nice.

Played Persona 4 on the emulator it worked perfectly 60fps no slowdown from beginning to end at 720p using computer in sig.

So if you want to church up your ps2 games the emulator is the way to go.

Else

Buy a Ps2 + component cables.

Doesn't the PS3 allow you to create virtual memory cards for PS2/PS1 games? I could be wrong, but I thought it did....

It does, you just have to have the memory card/USB adapter to transfer any older saves to your machine. Once you do this once, you'll never need that dongle again :p

If anyone really needs one, I've got one I can share. I think they're normally like $10.

It does, but he's talking about transferring your pre-existing PS2 save games from the memory cards to the console. When I bought my 20gb PS3 at launch, I had to buy that little $10-$15 adapter and I only ever used it once. I mean, the PS3 is fully compatible with all past Playstation titles and I sold my PS2 when I bought my PS3 because then everything worked on my PS3... so there was no need to have a PS2 anymore.

My advice would be to sell your current PS3 and get as good of a condition 60gb PS3 that you can. That's for three reasons... one because you'll have one central device that basically plays everything (Blu-Ray, PS1, PS2, PS3 games, DVDs, CDs, Media Center...), you can play your PS1, and PS2 games with the wireless Dualshock 3 which is really convenient, and the 60gb model also came with the flash memory card slots right on the front which I wish I had. But the biggest reasons are the first two.

It's not entirely compatible -- Guitar Hero series doesn't work. You can't use the controllers on the PS3, and the PS3 controlers don't work for the PS2 games... kind of sucks.

I'm sure there are other titles out there, too...

Well, other than the games that require certain accessories... but I mean the other 99.9% of games that don't require certain accessories to play are all playable on the PS3.

Just checked out some vids on YouTube. Man, PS2 emulators have come a long way.

Yep very enjoyable. Save state and speed up are a god send for RPG's. cut down the time it took to pass persona 4 drastically basting through dungeons at 200fps.
