I hate rumors, but this actually looks legit. None of that low resolution, TwitPic crap here.

You are looking at Apple's next iPhone. It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing, and here are all the details.

What's new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger batteryWhat's new

They were not able to determine the resolution because Apple remote bricked it before it was evaluated (and the firmware currently only works for 3G/3GS), but judging from the screen when connected to iTunes, Gizmodo says it is indeed a higher resolution.

I've got a 3GS, will I try to wait out my 2 year with ATT, or upgrade and be stuck for another 2 years...hard to say....

pretty sure they already verified this was a japanese knockoff... and not the next iphone.

Gotta love all the anti-apple fanboi's over at engadget's comment section going OMG smaller screen OMGWTFBBQ! From the side by side it's practically same size. They seem to have added everything we wanted -- multitasking, front facing camera with a rear facing flash/camera, noise cancelling, etc. I do wonder if you will be able to pull the microsim out and stick it in your ipad for data... That would be awesome. Glad I still have my old edge only 1st gen iPhone -- this is my next upgrade.

That was the rumor going around yesterday, today Gizmodo posted a tear down of the phone showing apple internals.

oh well if that's the case then awesome... yeah I was going from something I saw on macrumors yesterday about it being a fake.

I can't imagine that gizmodo will be in apple's good graces with them tearing down the prototype...

I want to see pictures of the chipsets
Also, a macro shot of the iphone displaying something to get a accurate estimate of the pixels would be nice.

What's unfortunate about a news story like this is that it invariably means at least one Apple employee — probably in a reasonably high position within the company — is getting canned (two months prior to launch means it pretty much has to be an Apple employee). So reporting something of this nature is pretty improper considering the consequences for the guy/gal who lost the thing.

It would be a tough thing to do, but a decent person would have notified the owner of the bar and left it with them, or, failing that, contacted Apple before publishing a story about it/informing the media. I'm sure the reward for doing the latter would have been fairly decent.

Oh well.

The gates of Hell are opening, someone is in a lot of heat. Steve jobs lawyers are out for blood now.

Its a design I'm gonna have to get use to, but it looks good.

Its ugly and beautiful at the same time. Build quality looks solid, but I still wouldn't want to drop that thing.

engadget broke this story.....

btw I am completely fine with them tearing it down and publishing it...

nothing wrong with it.... IMO

There is no way in the world that is final version of phone.
Because:
Its fucking ugly!
outdated look! ( 1995 cassette recorder LOL )
it is just demo/sample!

Slightly smaller screen! <--- i hope this is not true!

This is a fucking planned and planted leak by Apple. You think if it were actually a leak in the manner that was specified it'd still be up on Gizmodo?

A cease and desist order would've been instantaneously beamed from Cupertino over to Gizmodo and those images and information would've been pulled in under 30 minutes.

It's Jobso and the team keeping the hype train a'rollin... Granted, I think it's a great strategy, puts something out there to counteract the Android hype (Incredible, EVO, etc)

They definitely have pics out the wazoo of the inside and outside, so it's really hard to just call BS on this.

I guess we'll know it's real if Gizmodo gets a C/D letter from Apple tomorrow. :p

I like the design, but it's definitely a departure from previous iPhone models. It actually looks like some other non-Apple phones on the market. With that said, I still like it. The slightly bigger battery is one of the most welcomed specs in my opinion. Hopefully that translates to lasting longer before needing a recharge.

Apple wouldn't send a cease and desist, it would immediately prove that this is legit. They'll just completely ignore it like they do all "rumors". I doubt this is a planned leak, it's too soon.

I'm sure the final product will look slightly different, but that looks like the real deal to me. I hoping the final will look alittle less like the 3g. I read somewhere, that this prototype was "camouflaged" to look like the 3g or 3gs- at least on top and bottom.

Take a look at the article. They have a pic of the thing inside of it's plastic "case" that made it look like a 3G/3GS.

looks legit, and i actually like the design. it's still Apple-like, but a bit more retro. looking to upgrade to a faster phone from my 3G, and i'll definitely be getting this one.

I am not a Iphone owner but i appreciate the phone and if i could own one on T-mobile, i would (and swap out sim card between it and my android phone).

BUT...its FUGLY! Square android phones like the EVO or Incredible have more curve and style. They say the style of it in the pics is more like the real apple line up of products (macbook etc) but honestly what iv LOVED about the iphone is how sleek and curvy it is. Its a sexy phone, the phone in the pics looks like the sexy phones gimpy retarded little sister with down-syndrome.

"Dear apple....this sure as **** better be a prototype shell used not for looks but just as a shell to hold new hardware"

New phone is infinitely better looking than the 3Gs. Ive always hated the curved back of the 3GS, and it also feels cheap. This new phone design is way sexier.

I cant argue YOUR opinion, but i would just say the iphone separated itself from the pack with its looks. Now it looks like every other rectangle blocky smartphone.

IT LOOKS LIKE THE SAMSUNG INSTINCT

http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/18/samsung-instinct-available-june-20th-for-129-99-strings-attach/

you dont take a distinct phone look (iphone) and change it to look like a 50 dollar crappy touchscreen phone (instinct).

I'd have to say the older iPhones looked more like plastic toys than anything. That is especially the case with the white backing on them. Now, perhaps it's because of my love of 80s paraphernalia but I just thought the design looked closer to the more professional and muted stylings akin to BlackBerry designs. I will say that it is far less flashy and has less flair than the previous models and that's probably why I really like it. I don't need my phone to be a flashy device that stands out, I need it to be functional and unobtrusive.

At the moment I'm waiting for further information on it. I'd love to switch to it when it comes out so I can retire my iPod Touch and Blackberry 8900.

Looks sexy to me. No way that's just a prototype case. It's way too polished.

As for the screen, it's like a millimeter smaller... not noticeable.

Did they release any of the internal specs? Is it still using the X-Gold 608 baseband?

Disagree. The general styling, like the visible seam lines and screws, isn't standard for Apple's industrial design.

This is a prototype case. The iPhone HD, 4G, or whatever you want to call it won't look like that.

Edit: I realize [H] isn't exactly the biggest community of Apple enthusiasts on the Interwebs, but come on people. You actually think this is a real, final, ready-for-mass-production iPhone? Really?

I think it looks good. It's more industrial and less feminine. The argument, however, reminds me of this saying, can't remember it exactly, something about beholders, eyes, and beauty; oh well.

The screws and seams might go, but yeah, I think the final shipping product will look for the most part like that. Why would they put time and money into designing an extremely nice looking prototype case and then throw it away and replace it with something different?

Obviously there will be you guys that love the new look and us that like/love the old look more. I just cant get behind making the iphone which stood out as beautiful tech asthetically, becoming the samsung instinct. You show someone that new iphone 4g or w/e it will be called, and they wont be able to tell its a iphone until you turn it on and show the iphone OS...looking like every other rectangle smartphone isnt a plus
Just my opinion on the matter.
