I've been tasked with setting up a "NOC" to monitor our colo network; probably just on my computer for now. We have a few devices that we need to monitor the best we can. I'd like the following if possible:

-Real time reporting.
-CPU utilization on each device.
-Bandwidth usage on particular ports, both TX and RX.
-VPN bandwidth usage on a per-VPN basis.
-Pretty graphs or charts would be nice so my co-workers are able to read them.

I've never done anything like this before, so any recommendations would be welcome. We're currently using these devices, but software that's device-agnostic would be great:

Cisco 1841
Cisco 871
SonicWALL 2040(enhanced OS)
SonicWALL NSA 2400(enhanced OS)
Dell 5448 switch
Cisco ESW-520-48-K9 switch

Always-on server-based software is welcome too, as I can easily provision a VM to handle it. Again, any recommendations are welcome. Please point me in the right direction!

That sounds like Cacti would fit pretty much all your needs. I haven't used the virtual appliance they've got, but I have used the super-simplified CactiEZ install. Very smooth and a piece of cake to get running. I even monitor my server drive stats and printer consumables with it.

We can pay if it's the right product. Are the pay products better than the free ones?

Depends on what you need. Products you pay for will have more features, and theoretically better support.

Another check for Nagios! Our organization uses it as the primary alert for a 25,000 user network. With around 400 servers and 2000 Cisco/Juniper devices.

Xymon is what I've used for the past few years (used to be called Hobbit). Running 5K+ tests every 5 minutes, MRTG, etc. Has worked well for me. Lightweight, cross platform.
