HP ZR24w

I think that white glow is there on all the monitors, but I think how much you notice it varies depending on your environment and how close you sit etc... In fact white glow is a problem on most IPS screens I believe unless they have the A-TW polarizer or whatever it was called which really didn't really exist in many of them.

I'm no expert on the white glow issue but that's what I have seen people saying (but this could be incorrect.. someone with more in-depth knowledge out there?)

Been following this thread and was wondering:

Isn't the black level comparable to HP lp2475w ?

Does this monitor suffer from the same fuzzy text problem as the HP lp2475w ?

Read a few pages back about this guy who found the blacklevel better on his NEX 20wgx2. Really ?? also owned the NEC screen and it probably had the worst blacklevel I have ever seen. much worse than the Hp lp2475w...

I have been using this monitor for a week, so far I am quite pleased. I've experienced some color shifting but I am not surprised since its a LG panel. I am not sure what people are expecting from a monitor at this price point. I finally joined this forum after watching this thread for sometime. I think people are being way to picky about a monitor at this price point. I know people here are using this monitor for different purposes, but I think some here are expecting way too much. This is not a plasma tv, with deep black levels its not a high end LED panel, its simple monitor without all the bells and whistle. Sorry folks you get what you pay for. People who are interested in the monitor should just get it and make their own assessment, result will vary.

Im also interested what kind of contrast ratio and black depth people got with luminance set to 120cdm2. If its atleast comparable to LP2475w, I'm sold.

I have one on order but meanwhile have a similar sized Gateway FPD2485W that I bought from a friend for $100 (good deal?). I hope the HP runs cooler. The Gateway is quite the heat source and draws 120W. The picture is pretty reasonable though (PVA). I hope the HP will be a bit better so I won't be disappointed in comparison.

It's spec'd at 85w typ usage. I doubt the ZR24w uses even this much with lower brightness settings like I'm using. I think my previous 24" TN used approx 50-60w (judging from my Powerchute utility).

been following this (and other) topics for a new monitor, and finally decided on the zr24w. i received it this week, and i'm disappointed. the colors are good, although slightly blueish, and with the eyesearing brightness tuned down to 20 the picture is good. the blacklevel however is as bad as my crappy TN-monitor sitting next to it :(

m1.jpg

m2.jpg

the crappy TN (right) is at almost minimum brightness (allthough that doesn't even turn down the backlight), the zr24w (left) is on 20 brightness and 75 contrast. i'm probably sending it back, but i'm scared of having it replaced now. i might be trying to get my money back.

i know a picture in itself says nothing, but the blacks (grays) are really as bad as the TN monitor.... might i have a bad monitor, or are the black-levels generally as bad as this ?

I found that blacks aren't really blacks, more like gray but that's mainly because of the white glow effect.. But this isn't really marketed as a movie watching monitor anyway, what were you expecting? some plasma level blacks or something?

no, not crt-blacks or plasma-blacks, but at least better blacks than my old tn monitor. i don't know if that was too optimistic, maybe so. movie-watching i don't do on this monitor, it's mostly general desktop work, photo-editing (lightroom) and some gaming. i went IPS because i gathered it's the best bet between gaming and photo-editing (tn generally having crappy colors and mva generally being slow as i understand it). in all aspects but the black-level this monitor performs as expected.

i agree that the black levels arent that good, but going by those pictures.... something seems very very wrong.

for me, black is black, not a dark grey.

Send it back dude, mine is pretty damn black.

God bless America, it almost looks like different pictures then what desktop shows compared to my iphone. WOW

Exactly. Hp lp2475w had a nice blacklevel
Read on another forum that with brightness at 0 he still measured a luminance of 150cdm2
That would be a dealbreaker

i took a bunch of pictures of mine this evening.. not sure what the night scene setting does, other then enhance and exaggerate the backlighting and white glow.

Dell 2001FP on the left, HP ZR24W on the right. solid black backgrounds on both.

full size thumbs coming shortly.

for those that are wondering, its a dead pixel on the camera, not on the monitor.

I have access to an eye-one display 2 & tried to calibrate the screen for the first time with your requested luminance setting.

Requested settings:

Gamma 2.2
Kelvin 6500
cd/m2 120

Result after calibration:

Gamma 2.2
Kelvin 6500
cd/m2 120.1

http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/7738/calibration1.jpg

Note: This is the first time i have calibrated a lcd screen, i just followed every step very closely & adjusted every setting (brightness, luminance,..) until it was perfectly matched with the target indicators in the calibration software.

How can you measure black depth? I've looked at some LP2475w reviews & i i'm fairly confident the blacks levels of the ZR24w are NOT up to par with the LP2475w but as in some posts above mentioned they are "pretty damn black" nontheless.

Overall i'm very pleased with the monitor. Immense upgrade from my previous setup & imo it's the best mix of price & quality atm. Very well built & the image quality is g r e a t.

I can confirm that the default brightness is burning your eyes right out of your skull & to all the people who are complaining about the white glare i can only say: you are seriously sitting WAY too close to your screen, period, this shouldn't even be considered to be a negative point.

+ I can also confirm there is some albeit minor backlight bleeding at the bottom & very minor but noticeable color shifting with solid colors from top to bottom (cold to warm)

If you have other questions i'll try to answer them the best i can.

What is the easiest way to check for color shifting? on a white screen or what? 'Cus I have been looking and I just can't see it, hopefully that means I don't have any but it could also mean I am freaking blind :p

150 isnt too bad. Personally I use 140cdm2 most of the time, but 120 has become some sort of standard when measuring LCDs so. And if you have to reduce RGB sliders a lot if you want 6500K color temperature, brightness also drops, hopefully to much more comfortable levels.

Notice in the pic you posted of your results, it says Minimum 0.2 cd/m2. That is the number you're looking for.

Too bad that Eye-One Match doesnt give accurate black depth result, just a rough estimation. 0.2 it shows can be anything from 0.15 (excellent for IPS and TN) to 0.25 (quite bad).

*edit* typo fix

So I'm guessing this monitor is still a good buy for PC gaming purposes. For movie watching or console gaming there are some issues to be aware of/concerned about.

Guys, what's the best way to calibrate this monitor without a hardware calibrator? I used the EZ Tune software for my Gateway and it wasn't too bad. Does HP include any workable software solutions with the monitor?

Open a small blank Notepad window which shows a white background. Then focus your eyes on it while dragging around the screen. Left to right, top to bottom, or corner to corner. If there is a color shift, you'll notice the white background shifting color from blue/green to red/orange.

I went through 4 exchanges with HP to get a 2475w without the color shift.

I ordered mine late last night when it was $398 w/ $17 shipping. Just called and got my order changed to the new price because my order hadn't processed (shipoped) yet. Kevin Bickel is one cool dude. He saved me $27 and was really nice about it. As it stands now I would definately buy again from Cost Central. Here's hoping the rest of this transaction goes as well.

Update: I am very impressed with Cost Central so far. If thier prices weren't so high in general, I would probably order most electronic devices from them instead of newegg. My factory new almost pristine monitor box showed up on my doorstep less than 48 hours after CS adjusted the price of my previous days order (no dents, gouges or crushed corners, just a little conveyor belt black rubbed on one side). Free 1-7 day Fed Ex-ground shipping rocks. Newegg should get a clue and switch from thier "free" UPS shipping that is "subject to a 6 foot drop", especially for sensitive electronic equipment like hard drives and monitors.

My monitor left MISHAWAKA, IN @ 6:35 PM yesterday the 15th and got here in Michigan by 9:30 Am this morning. Can't beat $390 delivered to my door in 2 days (tax free/free shipping). Here's hoping I don't have any reason to test Cost Central's CS/RMA support. The only downside I can see with Cost Central so far is that My tracking information didn't get added until just before the monitor showed up, while Newegg's tracking was updated yesterday. Course I'm still waiting on the powersupply that I orderd from Newegg a few hours before I orded the monitor from CC.

I'm debating buying a pair of these to go with my LP2475w for Eyefinity. Does this seem like a good idea? I don't really mind the bezels because I'm going to focus on the center display (the LP2475w) and use the ZR24w for peripheral vision.

Cost Central's price is pretty excellent.

I'm not an expert whatsoever but i don't think that in upcoming reviews the black depth will be mentioned as the strong point of this monitor. There have to be better alternatives out there but they more than likely cost a bit more too..

Safe to say that there will be a color difference.

Got a request to post deltaE-values

I'm using Eye-one Match 3 software in combination with the eye-one display 2.

I recalibrated my monitor according to the sRGB standard settings I found on prad.de:

White point / Kelvin 6500
Brightness / cd/m² 140
Black point / cd/m² 0,00
Contrast / x:1 Native
Gamma / average sRGB (~2,2)

http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/review/2008/review-hp-lp2475w-part11.html

Results:

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/5928/srgbzr24w.jpg

average deltaE-value

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/1218/averagede2000.jpg

all of them:

If anyone is interested in my monitor settings i set to achieve the target indicators:

Brightness: 1
Contrast: 96
Color: R (157) G(173) B(152)

How much of a difference? Would I be better of just buying a pair of 24" TN panels if they're that wildly different?

Sorry i'm not sure of this, you might be able to tweak the colors a bit but black levels will be different, they use after all different panels.

Could you just maximize it? I'm hoping mine is fine but I'm also hoping I'll be able to spot things like this if need be, I'm trying it here on this laptop and I can't really see any color shifting, unless it's not as bad on TN panels or something.

I'll probably have lots of questions once I hook it up, I don't really want to look through 68 pages. There needs to be a sticky on calibrating/testing monitors.

I think you posted in the wrong thread, as this has now become the whining, pissing, moaning and beleaguering doubt thread. No happy customers allowed. :p

I think I must have the worst luck ever. It took me 2 weeks with phone calls every day to get my monitor replaced and the replacement has really bad backlight bleed. :(

http://www.neva.org/images/IMG_0437.JPG (dead pixels are in the camera)

I know at this price point I should not expect a perfect display but both of the monitors I received where not what I would call expectable. I don't know if I'm too picky or just have really bad luck. I'm thinking of returning this monitor and going back to my CRT till I can walk into a store and test my next LCD before buying it.

For anyone running Eyefinity with these monitors, are you having any issues with the display port connection? It seems every time I turn off the monitor connected to the display port (with the front panel button, not the rear button), my 5870 seems to detect the display as being disconnected and disables Eyefinity.

ouch.. was your room completely dark when you took this picture?
