I will be going on a cruise for 1 week, and I want to bring my iphone. The problem is that all I want to use it for is internet (via wifi) and ipod functions. If I turn data roaming to off, and I place it in airplane mode with wifi, will I avoid all the woes of getting charged unnatural amounts of money?

I don't want to recieve calls or texts. Also, if someone calls me and I have it on airplane mode, will I get charged for any voicemails?

And one final thing: Can I use the gps function on wifi alone, or do I need to have 3g and/or airplane mode off?

If data roaming is off and airplane mode is on...you should be fine..you wont be charged for voicemails left..you probobly will be charged for texts when you turn airplane mode back off..

just turn on airplane mode. You wont receive anything until you turn it off.

although, I probably wouldn't trust it. To be sure you wont get charged, just remove the sim card :)

I did this when I went to Europe. Airplane mode the whole 2 weeks. Not once did I even switch that. I did use WiFi though. That was FINE. Was able to Safari, Maps, Skype it up with ease.

Do NOT use it on the cruise. There is no more expensive access in the world. I had to use it once because of school and I was not surprised by it but the charges do suck. Airplane mode will be 100% fine from experience. Are you looking to use WiFi spots at the ports? If you name the places the boat stops I might be able to help. I am well versed in all the hidden WiFi spots on locations that cruises go to and trust me when I say some stops it is VERY VERY hard to find them unless you know in advance where they are.

+1 Cruise Ship rates are ungodly expensive.

I dont think you even can receive the call if you are not signing up for international service.
