HP ZR24w

how did you spot that? i wouldnt be able to see that with the naked eye
For some reason it's actually more noticeable in regular viewing conditions. That and it ends up being right in the middle of maximized window titlebars.

I had something similar - a piece of plastic from the packaging - and thought it was a dead pixel till I realized that it wasn't shaped like a pixel, and flicked it off the screen with the back of my thumbnail!
Unfortunately not the case for me, although you did give me some hope for a minute :)

...Still not sure what to do. I feel like I'm just nitpicking what is a pretty awesome monitor. My favorite part thus far is that this thing is dead quiet -- can't say the same for my old buzzing Dells.

Is there really a noticable difference in color compared to a nice TN???

Having a hard time justifying the price tag.

aw... i was hoping it was a video of a ps3/360 running in aspect ratio

Just tried my Xbox 360 using a DVI-HDMI cable and an HDMI cable with a DVI-HDMI adapter, no luck. Setting the Xbox to 1920x1080 or 1280x720 disables the Fill to Aspect Ratio option. Strangely, you can still use overscan to scale to the height of the picture and crop the sides, you just can't get black bars top and bottom like you'd want. It's not really an issue for me, though, since my secondary display I was planning to use anyways does 1:1.

eh, i guess its not the worst thing in the world. id rather take a slightly streched screen then having to play it over Svideo still.

Can anyone recall how long the LP2475W was available at the 'smart buy' price? HP had the same thing with two different prices on the LP2475W with the cheaper one having an SBUY designation. I may be mistaken, but it seems it was around for much of the product life.

It just seems that not many retailers have the ZR24W yet, and I'm concerned that much better deals may not be far off. The recent prices on the NEC EA231WMI have been very aggressive, and I'm wondering whether the ZR24W might get considerably cheaper once guys like Amazon or Newegg get it.

How does text look in IE if you zoom a bit ... is it still really sharp without any edge color artifacts? I think I'll have difficulty reading some text at 1920 x 1200 so I'll probably have to use zoom.

Also, I think someone said to get HP service to swap the panel, HP didn't care where you bought your monitor, they just wanted the serial number. Is this correct? If so, I'm starting to see better prices with free shipping as this monitor gets stocked by more online retailers. I'm not concerned about returning it for a refund, I just want to make sure I can get HP to replace a panel with dead pixels.

One last post ... has anyone calibrated their ZR24W yet? I'd love to hear your results (deltaE, contrast ratio, etc) and what calibration hardware/software you used. Thanks!

In games ... I have a 4850 ... is that card enough to play games at 1920 x 1200, or would I need to upgrade to a 5850? I'd also like to understand this 'fill to aspect ratio' works with games (since it doesn't support 1:1) ... how much of the screen gets used if you set your game to 1680 x 1050? I sure don't want to see anything stretched/distorted.

for the warranty, all HP wanted was the serial number. when the guy swapped out panels this morning, he didnt ask to see an invoice or anything. basicly he just said heres your new monitor, ill take the old one, sign here that you received it. have a nice day.

im running a 5770 and gaming at 1920x1200 with out an issue. ive gotta believe that 4850 would be just fine.

1650x1050.... not so good, kinda. scale to aspect ratio appears to not work on wide screen resolutions. 1600x1200, SAR works just fine. 1650x1050 its grayed out and you can only use overscan, or run it full screen at 1650x1050. i thought css looked just fine for the 30s i ran it like that. overscan id say took out about 5% of the viewable screen. on the start menu, all the text was almost butted up against the edge of the screen, if that gives you any idea. 16x10 looked fine though.

I will calibrate my ZR24w today..
But BJB said earlier to me that i should set Black luminance to 0,5 with the ZR24w, can anyone explain why i should set it to 0,5? Do i get best results if i set it to 0,5?
If anyone can't say why i will just stick with 6500k, 2,2 gamma, 120 luminance.

And should i run the monitor in sRGB or 6500k mode?

ok, i just did some scale to aspect ratio testing.

4:3 highest working res - 1600x1200
16:9 highest working res - 1280x720 (anything over only has overscan available)
16:10 highest working res - 1280x800 (anything over only has overscan available)

so, there we go. i have no idea if this is a hardware limit, or an oversight in the firmware that can be modded, or will be corrected .

hell, ill just email customer support tomorrow and see what they have to say .

* the monitor is apparently too new, looks like they dont have email support for this yet, and real time chat doesnt cover monitors at all. i posted a thread in the consumer section, so hopefully ill get an answer there.

I have a 4850 and a 5850... you'll be fine in 1920x1200 on high settings for most things if you have a decent CPU. i just went from e8500 to i7 960(silly to get 960 i know...)

I pulled the trigger and ordered one in Germany from Cyclotron.de at 340 euro (+/-$400). It was in stock so I should be getting it sometime next week.

Most shops in Europe have the ZR24w listed with both the promo product number and the regular product number. The difference is over € 100 ($135), so if the HP rep told anyone the screen normally sells for $500, they probably weren't kidding!

This may be an industry first where early adaptors actually pay less than those who wait a bit! :D

do they ship to SLOVENIJA?

Bad, really bad... I'd say it's an oversight. AFAIK it wasn't possible to firmware-update the LP2475w, so I'm pretty sure it's the same with the ZR24w... :(

do they ship to SLOVENIJA?
Yes they do, shipping costs in between 25 euro and 39 euro, depending on how many you order. :D It says my order weighs +/- 4kg although I find that hard to believe. HP itselfs says it's 11.5kg. But I only had to pay for sub 5kg shipping.

where? price?

http://www.pc21.fr/pro/hp_zr24w_-_ecran_lcd_24___ref_vm633at_abb__155375.html

I don't really know this shop but I've heard good things about it, it seems serious looking at the website (and business oriented), and I was already ready to buy the NEC EA23WMI there.

Now about the price, I paid 335,5€ + 15,5€ shipping. 351€ total (VAT included), a very good price considering the Dell U2410 is more than 500€ and for that price you order it in UK.

Answering to you, I see that the price has now jumped to 369€ without shipping ! I'll need 2 more so this isn't good, I hope with availability it will go down, there or somewhere else, I liked the idea of 3 good screen for 1000€.

I never touched any of the settings on my monitor, i only let the software do it all.

Can you check in the OSD if they didn't change ? HP has a software to change the hardware settings, so maybe the spyder's software can do the same ?

Having a hard time justifying the price tag.

You need to read something about the technologies involved. A TN screen can display good colors. The problem is that you can't see them, at least not all at once. Because there is a vertical shifting, so if you display a solid color, orange for example, it gives you this :

A 4850 isn't a bad card, now if you want to play the heavier games all maxed out, it will suffer. The 512Mo framebuffer will not help either. Wait for the screen and see for yourself with your games and settings how it goes.

For a PC usage, you don't care about the 1:1 mode of the screen, your graphic card can do it much better (it can also stretch better).

If you use this in 1680*1050, well, it will use 1680*1050 pixels, centered, and it will be black all around (the graphic card will create a 1920*1200 image for the screen, that way it won't stretch).

I don't use this, but I've tried it to see what I would lose by replacing my 1920*1200 screen with a 1920*1080 one, it made me realize that the difference was really substantial, real estate wise.

For those of you about to pull the trigger, I signed up to hp's newsletter and received a $10 off coupon on any item over $50 :)

You can now email them about the monitor, just checked this morning. The only problem is that I am at work and dont have my serial number.

I ordered mine last Sunday, and I barely got a tracking number. Won't be here until next Wed....WTF. Sigh.

The stand is a masterpiece of good engineering. Nothing like the flimsy contraptions often mentioned in reviews of cheaper units. Heavy, sturdy, and well designed, no wobble with this unit. All movements are easy to do, and work just as you would hope they would - smoothly and easily - but not likely to happen by accident.

You've definitely got that right! My two cats used to fight over who got to sleep on my FW900...sometimes they would play nice and they could BOTH fit!

Anyways, being the dumb cats they are...they've jumped on top of my ZR24w (it's about 2-inches thick I guess) and then fell forward over the back side, or off the side. The monitor SLAMS down to it's lowest height, but doesn't wobble at all. It took them about two jumps each to figure out they can't sleep up there any more...dumb cats.

Ok yah please let me know, I was thinking about getting a HP 2207h last year.

I'm sure Blackbird will get it WAY before I do, but I have the w2207h at home as well, the ZR24w is going to be its replacement. So I can give you a second opinion if you want... once I get it that is. :D

@rimble - I want to suggest super soaker discipline, but considering the proximity to your electronics it doesn't sound like a good idea. I suppose you could stomp your feet to get them down, then spray them. It's a once or twice per lifetime type of discipline. Not spray bottle, I'm talking broad-stream super soaker. They really hate it. Try to not do it on too young of cats, I had one shit itself once.

Thanks. I finally found the registry settings and they were set correctly.

If you don't see the color aberrations with very small black lettering on a white background (my two "ll's next to each other on this post look like Christmas trees with a green ghost if I look closely), "r" and "h" get the red treatment.
If I type a long row of repeating "l"s in a word document, say zoomed to 2/16ths of an inch tall, the green is very obvious....I guess I may have a panel issue.
BJB

Very interested to know if others are having problems with text. I'm looking a for a new monitor and clear, sharp text is of utmost importance, color/photo after that.

made me smile... thanks. heh

Just got a replacement.. still a bright pixel, one blue at the top of thescreen.. this sucks.

Also VM633A4#ABA vs VM633A8#ABA.. same monitor, just the promo price code vs normal price?

After using these for a bit I have a few questions.

Should I keep video overdrive on? Is that the equivalent of game mode on the U2410? We never saw any input lag tests with that option on, maybe there will be a difference? Didn't earlier reviewers state no such mode exists?

Should I put dynamic contrast ratio on?

Got mine from NCIX today. no dead pixels but mine has a piece of debris that lights up on dark screens and in a critical viewing area. arg..

Is there really a noticable difference in color compared to a nice TN???

Having a hard time justifying the price tag.

It's not necessarily better colors, but that there isn't the shifting, especially when on a larger monitor.

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/viewing_angle.php

Excellent example of color shifting. If you're on a TN, move your head around and you'll see the color changes.

OK So I now have three of these in Eyefinity display mode... previously when I had the 2xZR24Ws and the 1xBenQ FP241VW I was getting some vertical lines and horizontal lines messing up my display like the cable wasnt plugged in properly. There are youtube videos of it. It's like the monitors werent refreshing at the same speed or something.

After plugging in all three ZR24Ws, though, that has disappeared. While playing BFBC2 I did notice some horizontal tearing (I'm in landscape mode) but it did not detract from the gaming experience for me.

I originally said that there's very little backlight bleed on these monitors and I wanted to get clarification on that... When I sit too close to the monitor, like <2ft) the colors start to get washed out and it just doesnt look good. However at >2ft it looks wonderful.

I don't have any dead pixels but I noticed that on the last monitor I received there is something weird that occurs with it. I see some red "bars" where it should be black but it isn't. It's not visible at all times, only at certain angles. Moving my head 3 inches at about 3 feet away makes it appear as though this aberration doesn't exist.

I will probably have HP replace the monitor but overall I'd say they're pretty awesome!

Got my ZR24W today, set it up over lunch and briefly used it. Very nice! Very happy, thank you all. Much better than my 2001 21" CRT. Now to load up some games.
