The market research firm NPD found that more than half of prospective iPad buyers would rather have a netbook. I'm not one to defend the iPad but it isn’t really fair to compare a netbook that can do just about everything to a device with (intentionally) limited features.

Just over half of younger, prospective iPad buyers would rather have a netbook or notebook than the Apple tablet, the NPD found in a new study. Among 18-to-34 year olds, 51 percent would prefer a conventional portable than the iPad. Owning an existing Apple device also wasn't enough to sway some users as 44 percent still would rather get a computer like the MacBook than the slate design.

Next time get a real Tablet PC noobs. And load it up with Linux.

Kinda missed "prospective iPad buyers." Keyword perspective. Otherwise I was about to come here to say "Then why didn't they?!?!"

I wonder what question they asked. Whether they asked, would you prefer an ipad or a netbook, or what. I would rather have an ipad for just messing around, but if it was for school, work, or anything important, I would much rather have a netbook and I bet most people would too. If they asked, would you rather have an ipad or a netbook to take to class, only the stupid ones would answer ipad.

I need to find a cheap tablet that I can use for browsing the net w/ win 7 and features similar to a netbook. I want to use it for a remote when I have parties and don't want to waste $300 on a stupid ipod touch.....

This is why all tablets should use e-ink displays, they are mainly used for reading information and aren't powerful enough for anything else. Also it would do wonders for battery life in such a thin form factor. Guess there are no color e-ink displays though.

Only in R&D at present, and the color quality of the one that's been demoed to a few people is still rather poor.

The closest you can get to it atm is probably the screen from www.pixelqi.com It's a derivative of the one used by OLPC. It has a low power color mode and a very low power monochrome mode. There're several other companies developing similar types of screens, but the pixel qi is the only one currently available and since it can be made using LCD type production equipment shouldn't have as many potential production scaling problems as most of the others.

Steve Jobs compared it with net books so the comparison is relevant. I think the ipad is a mostly useless device.

Yeah well, he also used the word magical like 973 times, said it was revolutionary cause it got on the interwebs, and also mentioned something about pixies, fairies, and unicorns, although no one sane knew what the hell he meant by those comments..

He said the Unicorns get carried in by fairies and craps out pixies all over the screen to form information from the interwebs. That's why it has such a magically high resolution because of all the "pixiels" on the screen.

I think this is the main reason why PC people bash apple people so much... while apples market share is low, the % of their products that are in PRODUCTION environments is even lower. Their products are basically toys.

The news chick on the onion network skit of the mac wheel says it best:
"it remains to be seen if the wheel will catch on in the business world, where people use computers for actual work, and not just dicking around"

What practical use does the ipad have other than just "dicking around"?

Why does it need to have a "use"? It's not like PSP's and DS's have a "use". It's a fun device to play around with, browse the web, check social networking sites, play games and media. Just because it doesn't fill a need for you doesn't mean it's pointless to others.

NPD? Seriously?

NPD also said the Zune and Vista were a HIT.

Consider the source.
I remember a story on Reuters with an NPD source, they retracted the entire story because they thought NPD's data was horribly inaccurate. Had something to do with Xbox 360s.

Apple has been living off of less than 10% of the personal computer market for years. Apple currently has 5.02% of the operating system market http://marketshare.hitslink.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=8 and 4% of market share http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/12/03/mac_sales_projected_to_grow_26_in_2010_outpacing_pc_market.html so having 49% of people wanting an iPad over a netbook probably looks pretty good to Apple!

As for me, this is probably the only iPad that will be in my future..

yeah its unfair to compare it to a netbook, have it compared against a normal calculator (not scientific), any maybe, just maybe people may prefer the ipad more :D

PSP and DS have a purpose. Play games. iPad. No real purpose. Which is fine. I mean ppl will spend hundreds, thousands, millions of dollars for a picture to hang on their wall.

Windows 7 all the way! Linux just SUCKS on TPCs sorry, there's simply no comparison. You loose almost everything that makes a TPC special (no real ink, limited hardware support, etc). You really might as well buy a conventional notebook.

so does that mean the other 49% would rather have an ipad, or is that a combo of ipad + neither?

cuz if the other half want an ipad........ that's good for stocks. ka-ching!

is this news article supposed to be good or bad for apple?

Turn it around and let it say 49% of people polled said they would take an ipad over a netbook/notebook. If half of every person who was considering buying a netbook bought an iPad that would turn out pretty good in apple's favor would it not?

Oh god, that analogy suddenly explains a lot of things.

That's what I was thinking too. Honestly, I would love to get one of these but at $499 it's a tab more then I'd like. $399 or even 449 would tip me over to getting one even though it's as limited as it is.

I just want a nice, little system that is easy to carry around and has a touchscreen. I have a netbook already and it just doesn't do it for me. I have an iPhone that I love using like that but the screen is too damn small. Oh, and forget about the laptop I have as well, it's way too clumsy to use.

Shit, I just loaded up some eBooks I have onto the netbook and I totally love the idea of using it like that but not in actually using the netbook as a reader due to it feeling clumsy.

Probably an age issue but I browse the forum from home; I use a cell phone to make calls. I guess I just don’t see this incessant need to be connected no matter where I am.

i hope the ipad is really an ipoop and falls flat on its face for being made of so much fail.

Excuse me sir, I beg to differ. You obviously haven't heard of the Nokia N900...

You REALLY need to check it out! You'll end up throwing away your WinMo phone, I guarantee it ;)

It's amazing that all those people somehow have tried an ipad when they're not out yet.

PSP's (and especially DS's) are meant to be toys. They are marketed as toys.

Steve Jobs him self has put the ipad up against netbooks.

The ipods are hands down the best MP3 players ever made. The iphone while gimmicky, is an amazing phone.

The ipad is just... too much "magical" BS fluff. An ipod is better for music. An iphone is better suited to a 3G network (it can actually make calls!) a device that has an e-paper display (such as a kindle) is unbeatable for tablet style reading. A PC based tablet can actually run more than 1% of the software that people would consider useful.

Maybe, if someone makes an app for the ipad that displays cinnabuns, sparkles and rainbows everytime someone in the room farts, it will catch on.

Saying it will encourage people to throw away their WinMo phones is like calling it a "Zune Killer" - even if you're right, you still missed the point by about a mile.

I was talking about Windows 7 desktop as on my HP tm2 TPC. Linux desktop can't touch it for a desktop tablet.

Nice looking phone, waiting for Windows 7 Phone and seeing how that looks before I get a new Phone.

Agree with most of this. Devices like the Kindle are obviously great for extended battery powered reading on the go. I love eReaders on my tm2 however for nighttime reading and any type of reading where I'm doing research. It's trivial to scrape words out of books on a TPC. In fact its trivial to convert books into unencrypted text.

Yes this is the statistic I read too.

i.e. 49% of prospective netbook/laptop buyers would buy an iPad instead.... kerching. kerching.. massive success like the iPhone, inc.

This is a stupid survey... And here is why.

The iPad has not been released yet. When it is actually available to the average comsumer and they can truly see how one vs the other performs for whatever tasks they want to do, then this will be a valid question to ask. Netbooks are out today with known features/limitations. The iPad is still just advertising and (maybe) hype. People may find that the iPad will do exactly what they want such a device to do and others may find that it does not do what a netbook is good for.

I personally would guess that if you need to do a lot of typing/writing then a netbook is the answer. If you want a device to do quick web surfing, read ebooks and play games then the iPad will be the answer. I pre-ordered one and I have a netbook so I'll make the comparison when I can actually compare real hardware.

Having owned 2 netbooks before, I'd much rather have an iPad. Doing anything on my netbook was not a pleasant experience. It was underpowered, got uncomfortably warm and had a shitty display.

I expect too much out of a netbook to ever be happy with one, I've come to that conclusion about myself. I expect a miniature portable computer.. not a glorified internet appliance with a keyboard.

That is my own failing, but I just don't see a useful side to netbooks. With the iPad, I know going in and there is no mistaking that it can only do certain things. It'll make a great kitchen tablet, photo frame and mobile video playback device.
