so upgraded to a sapphire 5770 from a 8800gts 512mb g92 and im not too please to be honest. i actually lost about 20fps on starcraft2 and bfbc2 is only minorly better.

are these just not very good examples to use for games? is the 128bit thing biting me in the ass? i think the 8800gts was 128bit too right?

what do you guys think?

The 5770 should be faster overall and certainly not 20fps slower. Run some more benchs and games.

Rest of your system? Make sure the nVidia drivers are comletely cleaned out, use the newest 10.3 ati drivers.

You know, you should have asked us before you wasted your money. The number of bits in the memory bus is not important - what is important is ABSOLUTE PERFORMANCE.

In absolute performance terms, the 4850 is a smidge faster than an 8800GTS 512. The 4870 is about %15-20 faster than a 4850, at the outside best.

So, 4870 is %25 faster than an 8800GTS 512, best-case

The 5770 is about %5-10 slower than a 4870, depending on the game.

So, the 5770 is about %15-20 faster than an 8800GTS 512, best-case.

Don't believe me? Check-out this review of BF:BC2 (compare the 5770 to the GTS 250, minus a few frames).

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/battlefield-bad-company-2_7.html#sect0

1280x1024 4xAA

GTS 250 = 36.6 fps
5770 = 39.4 fps
extrapolated 8800GTS 512 numbers = 32.3 fps (this is an accurate estimate because it is also slightly slower than the 5750, which is where the 8800GTS 512 should be)

So, you get maybe a %20 speed improvement in most games. And what happens when you're playing a game optimized for Nvidia? Well, your framerate will be slightly SLOWER.

Next time post here BEFORE you buy your new card.

comparing my 5770 to my friends 4870, theyre pretty close. the 4870 will normally perform a hair faster, but over all theyre close enough that id call them equal.

No, the 8800GTS is 256-bit. You lost performance because...
ATI -- inferior
Nvidia -- superior

many people who go from nvidia to ati in the same machine seem to have this problem. One, you were used to some games made for nv and those games DO run a little smoother. You say you lost frames so you quantified this with some program, yes? If so, then you probably didn't clean all the drivers from the cards previous install totally. Use the drivercleaner in safe mode to rid those drivers and residual files, then install ati newest. TBH, everytime I've tried ati cards and most times, I feel like there's a small stutter in every game I play that wasn't there when I played w/nvidia.

hey sorry guys I've been at work all day. I used driver sweeper before installing the new card and I am using 10.3 drivers.

What would you guys do if you were in my situation? My specs are in my sig. I was thinking selling the card and picking up a 5850 instead? Or should I go back to Nvidia?

ok I just reinstalled the drivers and starcraft 2 is running much better.

edit in fact BFBC2 is definitely an improvement. Starcraft 2 remains maybe 5fps slower. I'll have to test out some other games, nothing else really interests me at the moment though.

You can go into your catalyst control panel , go to advance mode then graphics and click ati over drive. Then click on the key to unlock it. Click auto tune. Let it have its fun (can take 10-15 minutes) come back and use those settings.

The 8800gts is most likely using more power and creating more heat than your 5770. So yo'll grab some fps out of that.

true that, thanks for the input guys I am satisfied with the card now. I will look into getting a 2nd one after i get a phenom ii x4 and mobo and new psu of course.

Sounds like a pretty nice upgrade. Are you looking to reuse the ram you have or move to an AM3 platform?

lol, you fail lucky777

I went from a 8800GTS 320MB to an Asus 5770, and it about doubled my performance.. i ran driver cleaner before i put in the new card, haven't had any problems. still gotta upgrade to 10.3a

Overclock it! it will help some people have hit 950/1000 on the core that should help performace

yea i just overclocked it and managed a 8600 on vantage.

I got it at 930/1300. Seems stable and I can definitely tell a difference.
