Every time I go into that store it reminds me why I never buy anything at those stores anymore. I am not a hardcore console gamer so I probably only pick up a new PS3 game about twice a year (usually NCAA Football and some other random game). Anyways I wanted to get back into the NFS series and really liked the Shift demo on PSN so I decided to buy it. Checked out Newegg and they have it for $37 with free shipping, but want to play it now so I went to Game Stop and they have it USED for $54. WTF? Wal-Mart had it a little cheaper but not as cheap as Newegg.

I stopped getting PC games at that store LONG ago but held out on console games because of the used titles they had but they are so ridiculously priced that they just turn me off even if they did have a relatively close price on something.

I have also sold games back to them before that were in perfect condition and were not that old, they game me $20 and turned around and resold it for $54... and they probably did the same thing 5 times on that game.

Anyways enough of my rant, I hate Game Stop and whatever the other one is called and will never step foot in one again.

They gotta pay the bills. Buying that game from you for $20 and selling it for $25 isn't going to make them much money....

[edit]
after reading that back, I wanted to state that I'm not a fan of them, but I understand their pricing on some products.

yeah I agree...it's all about supply and demand.
If they sell a used game for $54, it's prolly because there are buyers out there...

I have found some good deals at EBgames before, and I also found some outrageous deals there...

I try to stay away from the bad ones, and keey an eye for the good ones...

All in all, you should look into craig's list and similar sites if you wanna trade games. If you cut off the middle man, you end up with much better deals altogether :)

I would never buy a used game for $54

I can't believe the amount of suckers that are willing to pay that much for a USED game.

I'd rather sell mine to a friend or on Craigslist than sell it to Shitstop.

Game Stop is one of those stores where you have to pick and choose.

Some days they have INCREDIBLY deals (DarkSiders two weeks ago, for one day, was at $25). And other times they are overpriced, but thats because, somewhere, someone is buying the higher priced products, which keeps GS with the higher costs.

Watch what happens with crap titles, cause usually GS is the first to drop prices. Bionic Commando for instance, started at $60, within 2 weeks had dropped to $40 than to $30. Damnation, started at $60, dropped to $20 within a months time.

So again

Good deals, and bad deals.... Just gotto look for em!

I personally LOVE GameStop for it's used games. With thier ' 7 day no questions return policy' on Pre-owned games is great. Pay a 54$ deposit play a game for 7 days, return it for full with some free entertainment....dunno heh I got a ton of Gamestops near my house so it works for me :)

You gotta go there when they have special deals going on. For a couple weeks (ended last week) they were giving 50% more for used games so I took my 360 copy of Borderlands and they gave me $40 for it along with $10 for Devil May Cry 4 (was $25 and $2.50 last time I check, lol.. dunno bout that math) so I was able to walk out with BFBC2 for PC with a straight up trade. Plus, if you have their Edge card, you'll get an additional 10% off used games, so that helps a little bit.

I know any other time they're total rip offs, but occasionally they do offer good deals and services.

they do have good deals from time to time. i too ride the 7 day grace period on some used games. great way to go through a few games you might be unsure of or just want to play for shits and giggles...

i think the most i returned via the 7 day rule was 3 in a row..... I got my Gamer Score up a few hundred points easily too... lol.

If you really want a newer game and don't want to pay that high GS price.... craigslist it first. people are always looking to selling their new games for $30-35 because they know someone will buy it and it's more than they would get at GS and it's a lower price than someone would pay at GS!

patience and determination go a long way!

I agree 100 percent with what you said about Craigslist.

Although I've found lately with all my friends having PS3 games, we just pass them around.

I might buy a game, let a friend borrow it, he buys that hot new game, I borrow it, and that kind of cycle goes on.

Having a circle of friends you can do that with really puts you in the club! That's definitely the way to go.

I couldn't agree more!

On 360 I have borrowed so far:
Crackdown, Soulcalibur 4, Spidey web of shadows.
On PS3 I have borrowed so far:
Uncharted 1 & 2, Little big Planet, MGS4, Assassin's Creed 2, Infamous, Heavy Rain.
From Craig's list type sites I have bought used so far:
Dante's Inferno, FIFA 10, Ninja Gaiden 2.

Total dollars spent on games: $90.00 :)

Good call on FIFA 10, Gigantism. I don't see that game discussed nearly enough around here. It's absolutely fantastic. I just wish I could play someone online who didn't decide to play as Barcelona.

Man, I completely 100% agree with you. Read my sig. However, you're going to get flamed by the Gamestop botz. This company has probably the worst customer service of any nationwide chain and people feed them fucking money. The only time I would ever consider doing business with them is when I know that I'm the one making out with the better deal, which is almost never.

And listen, I can understand that they only give $20-30 for a new game for credit because that's how they make money. But turning around and selling it for basically the price of new is fucking crooked. I also know they open games up and play them, then reseal them with the stupid fucking wrapping machine and sell them as brand new. I've seen them do that shit before. They also treat their employee's like shit. You are a number and all that matters is your numbers.

I'm so glad I'm not a teenager anymore and buy into their bullshit.

you obviously dont play MM. FIFA 10 sucks if you want to play that mode, there is a terrible glitch that makes your career unplayable where you are -2.2 billion in debt with no way to buy players. So yea, FIFA 10 is not fantastic...

I do not mind Game Stop if it is for somewhat older games. If I am looking for a PS2 or Xbox game, it's usually cheaper to get it there than order it on eBay. I agree though. Game Stop is very over-priced for used titles that are relatively new. But, I do not buy my console games from them unless they have been out for a long time, so I do not really care about what they charge for recent releases.

The thing I HATE MOST about Game Stop is that they sell you new games, that are already opened. How the hell am I supposed to know if the game is new, when the saran wrap AND security sticker have been removed. I cannot believe they still do this...

While I agree with you, they shouldn't open merch then sell it as new, you can also look at it this way; A game can only be new until someone opens it. If you've checked and the manual, case, and disc are all in pristine condition, does it really matter who opened it, you or them? Unless you're going to try to ebay it years later for a big profit, your experience does not change just because they opened it.

maybe so, that's one reason I loathe shopping there

I'd rather order off Amazon or buy it at Wal Mart.

at Wal Mart, they put a security sticker on it

so nothing's messed with

Very true, I ended up ordering from Newegg and they have already shipped it and will be here on Wednesday. I love Newegg.

I usually play head to head online matches. So yea, FIFA 10 is fantastic.

They have terrific prices on older used games, especially if you're looking for something quick and cheap to play and don't feel like getting it online.

I was a long time PES fan, but EA won me with FIFA 10.

Oh another one of these...get at least one once a month. :p

Yea gamestop isn't that great, it's the last place I go to find a game. I'll order off of Amazon first. ;)

Yes it does matter. My games are all in MINT condition, even though I have played countless hours on them. I am not able to tell if the game has been used. You can also mix and match games, manuals, and cases in order to achieve the result of the game looking new.

Gamestop makes it easy for me to price items. Lets say a gamecube bundle I sold a few years ago, I went and called gamestop and asked them how much they'd offer for the package. They offered like 100 dollars. Then I looked at how much they would resell everything, it ended up being around 275. So I sold the package for 175. I win, the guy who bought it wins cause he gets it 100 cheaper than buying it used at gamestop, and we both go home happy.

I fucking hate gamestop too, they a monopoly. Let see they bought out Funco Land, Babages, Software Ect. And now they don't hardly sell any computer games.

I was really pissed when they bought out Software Ect. Because Software Ect. had many computer games that you couldn't find anywhere else but online( where talking a 30 foot wall with nothing but computer games), they also sold computer hardware such as sound cards, video cards, keyboards mice , also action figures and other games.

yeah, Fuck gamestop. I will learn to embrace online purchasing though places like Steam and GOG.com in hopes that it will ultimately put gamestop out of business.

Sounds just like what pawn shops do. They buy cheap and sell high. I like going into gamestop or gamecrazy every once inawhile. You can find good deals like others have said. If its to pricey don't buy.

The local EBGames (owned by GameShop) has some pretty friendly salespeople and . It's also walking distance from my house. I'll usually take that option over driving all the way down to a Best Buy to pick a game up.

I buy all my PC games via Steam. The last PC game I didn't buy on Steam was FEAR 2, because the same EBGames had it on sale.

Selling games to GameStop is a total scam. They make tons of money off of those sales, and you get pennies for your old games. If you don't ever play them again it's fine (basically any SP game with no replay value). I'd hate to be in a position where I found myself saying "Dang, I wish I hadn't sold that game".

Something I've found odd is that everytime I've gone to Game Stop over the last couple of years, I've found used games that cost more than the same game new.

I actually found the opposite. Used Halo 3, perfect condition, previous owner bought it new, and sold 3 days later. I got it for $20

GameStop Telling Lies to Sell Warranty?
1:20 PM - March 25, 2010 - By Kevin Parrish - Source : Tom's Guide US

A GameStop salesman said that Microsoft fries Xbox 360 motherboards.

ZoomThe main goal of a salesman is to get you to buy a product, plain and simple.

Some go about it honestly, while others push the product into your face by sheer brute force. Some are downright liars, making empty promises or saying what you want to hear in order to make a buck. But combine a dishonest salesman with an experienced gamer, and you have another GameStop scandal.

Case in point: a GameStop employee told a customer that Microsoft is sending out kill bugs to Xbox 360 consoles in order to fry their motherboards. There is a hint of truth in there: the company distributed the "kill bug" to knock hacked consoles off the Xbox Live network. A side effect is that many consoles developed problems with the hard drive.

But the salesman twisted the incident in order to sell a warranty. In essence, Microsoft was purposely zapping console motherboards, so the best bet is to purchase an extended warranty through GameStop. At least, that was the overall sales pitch. The whole ordeal was detailed here, depicting a gamer accompanying a female friend--the actual customer--and their gruel ling experience in purchasing the console.

"The next 20 minutes at the point of sale counter ended up being an excruciating exercise in badgering," said gamedreamz. The ordeal started with a pitch about the console's dreaded Red Ring of Death, saying that the Xbox 360 was "definitely going to break in the next few months." It then moved into bully tactics and reverse-psychology. But it was after that when the clerk said that Microsoft fries Xbox 360 motherboards on purpose.

"It’s true," the clerk said. "They did it to people who played Modern Warfare 2 early."

Of course, this entire incident could be a farce. But as a consumer who was burned by GameStop on several occasions, the situation is not surprising. Keep in mind that not every GameStop salesman will feed you a pile of garbage: many are really gamers and want to protect their "kin." Still, this type of antics is outrageous, and should result in a prompt dismissal if it indeed is true.

What lesson have we learned here? Never try to fool a gamer--it will just make rounds on the Internet.

They gotta pay the bills. Buying that game from you for $20 and selling it for $25 isn't going to make them much money....

They don't give the customer $20.00 for a used game, depending on how old and popular the game is of course. They buy it from you for rock bottom price (even as low as$1.00 - $2.00 on some games) and sell for max amount possible thay think they can take you for. I've seen them sell used games that are only a couple of bucks less than a new copy. They are cut throat scum.

I used to go to gamestop when I was mainly a console gamer.
But since I've been a pc gamer for the past years, I stopped buying games at gamestop and would rather shop for pc games in other places since they are cheaper.

But, when I am looking for last generation used console games I go gamestop. heck i bought a used eyetoy for ps2 for $2.99+tax... works well as a webcam :D

At one time online you could find the 'Whistle Blower Zero" videos where some guy was talked about his experience working with Gamestop. The video's were in the "Yahtzee' style. They were funny and very informative to the inside of Gamestop antics. The guy basically ripped Gamestop a new one simply by talking about how the company runs. The videos were taken down everywhere though so I doubt you could find them online now.

*edit* Found them!

If you hate Gamestop, and or like Yahtzee style videos, watch these. "You can't truly hate the company until you work there". Also, "If your dumb enough to pay a claim fee for a lottery you won in Nigeria, I have a nice DVD re-winder you might be interested in."

This should be the official Gamestop bitching thread.

Anyways went in today to pick up Call of Duty 4 for 20$, I forgot my ID at home so they said sorry we need an ID I was like how old do I fucking look? I'm 18 years old and look old enough. So I said fuck it I'll let my friend buy it for me who DEFINITELY looks older than 18, has a big beard distinctive older features whatever. Her response? Sorry we're just closed the registers. Gamestop sucks balls.

I hate Gamestop, so I only set foot in there when there are very good deals to take advantage of, which is typically 1-2x a year.

They're covering their asses. I guess you've never heard of the "secret shopper" that is just waiting to bust a business out for not carding.
