Hi all,

Just got a PS3 on Thursday, and I wanted to share my experience with those on the fence about getting the console.
First of all a little background info:
-I’m 30 years old
-I’m a long time PC gamer
-The only console I ever owned was a PS1

2-3 years ago, my cousin got a Xbox 360, and has been bugging me since for me to get one also.
I kept telling him that most good games are available on PC, while the controls and graphics are better.
I personally didn’t care for Halo and Gears of War, and even FPS games in general. Being a long time PC gamer, I was never able to transition from Keyboard + mouse to dual analog. I was aware that consoles controllers were best for Fighting, racing and sports games.
But I was able to do that on PC too since I have a gamepad for PC. So everything was clear in my mind: I do not need a console.
Everything a console can do, my PC can do it too and better.

Last August, I moved in with my gf, who owns a 360.
At first, I thought it was kinda cool, as a “media center”, streaming movies from my PC to my TV seamlessly.
I was still not using it for gaming.

Then, a couple of months ago, the Dante’s Inferno demo came out. This was the turning point:
For the first time, I found myself having a lot of fun, and was sad to see the demo end. For the first time, I was sad to know that Dante’s Inferno wasn't gonna come out on PC. For the first time since 1997, I bought a console game.

I bought Dante’s Inferno used, for $40, and I had a blast. The controls were fun, the graphics were good, the gore and violence was sick.
Also, I must say I enjoyed playing on my Bravia .
Quickly after finishing Dante, I bought Ninja Gaiden 2 (which is good, but not as good as I hoped) and then Fifa 10.

Then, after talking to my friends about Dante’s Inferno, and how much fun it was, all I could hear was: God of War, God of War and God of War.
That got me thinking. I remember my friends talking about it a few years back. I saw a few of them play the game a couple of times even.
I had never tried it personally.
But then God of War 3 was coming out soon, and my gf started to talk about buying me a PS3 :D

So here I am: I got my PS3 on Thursday. I didn’t buy GOW3 because I was told to get GOW collection first, and play through the 1st two.
So I did buy it, and am playing through the 1st one at the moment.
I borrowed from friends:
Heavy Rain, Uncharted 1 & 2, Assassin’s Creed 2, Infamous, MGS4 and Little Big Planet (for gf).
I also found Burnout Paradise for $9.99 at walmart yesterday. I bought it since my gf was a huge fan of Burnout revenge on Xbox.

My impressions: The PS3 interface is slick looking. As a media center, it’s not as good as 360. Updating the system was a breeze.
However, updating games took FOREVER!! Others had mentioned it, and it is as bad as they described (updating Burnout took almost 1 hour!).
I must say, I used to love the Playstation controller when I used to own my PS1, but this time around I find the 360 controller to be better.

The games are beautiful and good! No real difference with 360 there (I find) although I didn’t do a side by side comparison or anything...just general impression.

All in all, I’m loving it! I’m loving playing Fifa and Soulcalibur on 360, I’m loving playing GOW and burnout on PS3 (haven’t had a chance to try the other games yet). I am lucky enough to have a 360 and PS3, but I find that both systems are good, and similar enough to make a good decision either way if you can afford only one. I gotta give Sony the advantage as far as exclusive titles go though, in my opinion.

My gf bought the Pirates of the Caribbean triology on Blu-Ray yesterday. I am very curious to see if the picture and sound will be THAT much better (haven't watched them yet).

That’s it for me, I hope my experience will help some people who weren’t convinced yet.

Cheers!

I am having a dilemma right now with my PS3 and PC. My PC is not good enough to run BC2, but I suck at FPS on the console, basically the only thing I use the console for are sports games and racing games and a little GTAIV (but still cant aim worth shirt). So now I have to figure out if I want to get BC2 for the PS3 and force myself to learn how to play FPS on the console.

I just don't know... I love my keyboard and mouse but I don't want to upgrade my PC.

I am jealous that you have borrowed basically all of the defining PS3 games. I don't know anyone else where I live who owns one :[

I wasn't expecting Dante's Inferno to be the game that caused you to turn. I have never understood the appeal of those horribly over-the-top Bayonetta/Dynasty Warriors/Dante's Inferno games, with the enormous weapons and HUH HUH HUH HUH YAAAAAAA sound effects and the swarms of tedious enemies that you batter over and over and over before they die. It's like playing a Japanese cartoon.

I suppose it depends on what games you like. I used to be console-only since before the days of the Megadrive, and still have great fun replaying Robocop vs Terminator or the Spyro games. But playing games on the PC just seemed a world apart. I went back and bought a 360 a few years ago and just spunked a crazy amount of money on it. I loved the Burnout games, so I got Paradise and thought it was terrible. I bought Vegas 2 and never played past the first level until I got it on the cheap on Steam, and played it through and loved it.

It's down to my own preference. The console-exclusive games also tend to be the sort of game I really don't enjoy, like MGS4 and GoW and so on. If anyone can confirm that the most recent Spyro games are as good as the first ones I'll definitely give them a go, but I expect they've gone the same way as most console franchises - milked to shit and corrupted irreparably.

Well, the thing is:
I've always been playing only sports or fighting games on consoles.
The few times I tried FPS games on consoles, I felt completely retarded.
However, playing beat em up (like the titles you mentioned) was surprisingly fun!

My gf is a Spyro fan, so I'll be sure to look into it :)

yeah I got lucky that my friends who own a PS3 decided to keep their games instead of selling them once done with them :)

I feel the same way as I cannot for the life of me play FPS games on consoles.
So I decided to use my consoles for all genres except for FPS.
Time to upgrade your PC :(

You mentioned the game updates taking forever - are you connecting the PS3 via wireless? I've had a fair bit of experience with the wifi card kind of sucking on that thing, and plugging it straight into ethernet makes things like updates an order of magnitude quicker.

yes I am using the PS3 Wi-Fi...
The thing is, my computer and modem are in the bedroom, and there are 2 concrete walls between it and my living room (where my TV is).

So I can't really plug my PS3 to the ethernet cable :(

My Xbox 360 is on wireless as well, but is infinitely faster than my PS3 :(

I suppose you're right, the PS3's Wi-Fi must suck donkey balls :(

There are some experiences that I had on console that were incredible. MGS, ZoE, and Disgaea 2 to name a few. You just don't find games like that on pc. But at the end of the day, I'm an fps guy at heart and find myself back on the pc, enjoying my mouse and keyboard.

BTW: You're really going to love that ps3 more and more as you start trying the borrowed games.

Man, tell me how you like Assassin's Creed 2. I bought it last week and spent ALL, when i say ALL, i literally mean ALL, weekend playing AC2. I've not done that with a console game in a LONG ass time, probably not since MGS4.

Wow, man, this game is so good, I might even buy the DLC for it. I only paid $30 for it at Best Buy when they were doing the sale last week. I have to say I got my money's worth and then some.

It's an absolute frickin bargain. I wish they had never made the first game, so you could play as Altaiir in a proper Assassin's Creed game. The first game definitely wasn't AC, AC2 is the definite AC game.

I'm excited to see what they do with 3, cause the possibilities are endless.

I do think they borrowed heavily from GTA 4 in some cases, it's very easy to see the similiarities, yet it retains it's own appeal.

I'm in a bit of same scenario with my Xbox 360, I used to play all the old rpg's on ps1 and never thought it was the same on PC, although now with all the mmorpg's out there this seems to be the thing to do now a days when it comes to RPG's. I reccommend picking up Bayonetta if you like Dante's inferno and Ninja Gaiden. There should be a demo on PS3.

My xbox360 is for guitar hero / rock band when other people come over and some console exclusives like Halo 3 / GOW / JRPG's... with halo and GOW still being mostly a game I play only when other people are over.

Personally, though I've been a hardcore PC gamer for over a decade now, I've never given up consoles. Some of my greatest gaming experiences were (and still can be) on consoles.

I mean, I grew up in arcades and on the first consoles, and from the first Playstation on, some of the greatest games have been played on console. Resident Evil, Silent Hill...

In this gen of consoles, honestly, the 360 on a good LCD TV (as I've said in another thread). while nothing can totally match the visuals of PC, it looks pretty damn great, and some games even just play better on console. Gears of War 1 & 2 were both incredible titles, love Crackdown (was like crack), Dead Rising, Borderlands, GTA IV etc. and a few racing titles...

Tried the demo for Just Cause 2 on 360 just the other day, after having tried it on PC via Steam last week. I'll be getting it for 360, because the controls just feel far better on 360, and it looks incredible on 360 as well.

For the most high-end visuals, and for the FPS genre, I stick with PC for many games. But, the 360 on a good set-up does look outstanding much of the time these days, and control-wise, games are just feeling more and more suited for gamepads, due to the feel of the controls with many titles. Most third-person shooters are on 360 for me.

I have a PS3, but it doesn't get much use. I've noticed quite a difference in visuals between quite a few games, and the gamepad is far less comfortable for me with the PS3 than the 360. It's good system for some games and some people prefer it, which is great too.

I can say that I've "migrated" to the 360 more and more as time went on, and while there's nothing like PC for the highest-end visuals or for FPS titles (because I cant aim for shit in FPS titles with a gamepad), the 360 has definitely grabbed me for more and more games as time has gone on, Just Cause 2 being the latest to have done so. Looks a bit clearer on PC, but still looks incredible on 360 and feels far more "natural" somehow, after playing both demos.

I wouldn't touch something like Mafia (or Mafia 2), Mass Effect, DOOM etc. on console, but all-in-all, it doesn't surprise me to see yet another individual having an experience in finding out that console gaming can be a fantastic experience.

Infaustium, have you tried Just Cause 2 with your 360 controller on pc? I remember when dmc4 came out keyboard controls were absolutely stupid, but I hooked up a 360 controller and never looked back.

One thing that always bothers me about playing games on the PS3 is the lack of AA. For some reason this doesn't bother me nearly as much on the PC. Maybe its the lower resolution making the jaggies appear bigger or something. Plus, I suck at using the controller for FPS games, so I tend to skip those on the PS3. :p

That said, there are still some fun games to play. From what you have said, you may want to look into the PS3 Ratchet and Clank games. They are pretty fun.

My gf bought the Pirates of the Caribbean triology on Blu-Ray yesterday. I am very curious to see if the picture and sound will be THAT much better (haven't watched them yet).

It is. Assuming you have an HDTV. ;)

I suggest you play all of God of War one after the other. Brace yourself for when you get to GoW3. Amazing too bad it's shorter but damn it was worth the wait.

That's what I'm doing right now. I believe I'm close to the end of the 1st one.
I can't wait to play the 3rd one, but decided to do things properly this time :)

If you have a PS3 you HAVE to get PS3MEDIA server!!! I've been streaming 720/1080p MKV files to my PS3 with this program and as long as it's on a wired connection it works flawlessly.

For video file support, I do prefer PS3 Media Server. I also use PlayOn for Hulu. Works great and the reason why I haven't tinkered with a HTPC yet (that and I have TiVos). I prefer the picture/sound from my PS3 over my 360 as far as media stuff goes. The Media Center Extender in the 360 doesn't always seem to work like it should over my powerline networking as well. Whereas, PlayOn and PS3 Media Server seem great. *shrug*

As far as games, the ones I have enjoyed the most have been on the PS3 so far. In the past on previous playstations, it had been the opposite. I guess games like Uncharted will do that to you.. Still prefer a good game on PC though, as I have a tendency to not play a game and watch TV of some kind instead heh.

I had tried AC1 on 360 when it came out...I thought it was aaight...
I bought it for PC, and played it for a whole 30 mins and never went back (I had a meh feeling).
However, I heard AC2 was super good compared to the 1st one. I was trying to buy it used when I found out that my buddy had it collecting dust on his shelf so...voila :)

take everything you felt about AC1 except the cool parts and throw it out the window.

They expanded on the cool parts BIG TIME.

Think Grand Theft Auto 4 in Medievial Italy and you're in for it!

I find myself playing more and more games on my 360, simply because of ease of use, gamerscore points, and the games can be had for cheap used from gamefly, hastings, and the like. Most of my games, I've got for less than $10.

It's hard to adjust at first, but after a while, it gets easier to aim, and most games have a built in aim assist to compensate.
