Hi

I have an idea for the ultimate windows 98 machine. Basically because some games still dont work well enough on xp/win7/dosbox but ran fine on windows98.

So I'm looking for good compatibility and performance

Ive got in my mind something like a 600-733mhz p3, 128mb pc133, tnt2 or maybe a geforce ddr or even a geforce2, sb live or awe64 (depending on if the motherboard has isa, awe64 rox)

Hell even a 3com etherlink

(i'll probably break the period by having a nicer 7200 ide drive with 8mb cache, probably a 120er if 98 supports them.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what motherboard I should base this build around? Or have any receipts they can dig out for any rigs you might have built around the time frame?

Why don't you go for the s478 based 845 chipset mobos

I had an Intel 845WN which had 3xPC133 RAM slots , several PCIs and an AGP 4x 1.5V iirc. I used to run a Riva TNT2 M64 and Willamette 1.5 Ghz on it. It was good for its time.

It just loved ol '98 and even XP ran fine on it with my 256 mb ram (I even installed a vLited Vista on it btw :p).

Still have it stored somewhere in the cupboard. When the mobo blew a few capacitors after more than half a decade of abuse, I retired it but the rest of the stuff would still work I guess.

I remember fondly building a PC for someone back in 2000. He said he wanted top end everything, and I was like well the Voodoo 5500 just came out and its a beast. He said yep...I was like "$300 for a video card, are you sure???" Hell of system, though, I did feel bad for him since 3dfx soon disolved after that.

The 3Dfx splash screen is still one of the coolest things I've seen in computers. It was like the compter was saying "Hold on, while I set this baby to 11".
