If you are a male video game player, please go get a non-gamer friend to read this article to your stupid ass.

The study is the first controlled trial to look at the effects of playing video games on learning in young boys. That is to say, the findings aren't based on survey data of kids' game habits, but instead on a specific group of children that were randomly assigned to receive a PlayStation or not, and followed up for a certain period of time.

Maybe they used Star Trek Borg for the games? I remember those actual "VIDEO" games.

lol, I would love to argue with this article, but I can't help but remember all the times that I put off homework to play video games.

So if left unhindered, a child will not do the right thing and play video games. Surprised?

Shouldn't this be titled 'Kids who have dumb parents will turn out uneducated'?

Durrrrrrrr.....

See George.
See George run.
See George run with boom stick.
See George run with boom stick shoot bad guy.
See George jump up and down.

Do I qualify to be part of the Elite Stupid? ;p :D

The whole study is pointless because the "smarter" kids will go onto waste 4+ years of college and incur a massive amount of student debt. While the "dumb" kids will go to some vocational school and rip the "smart" kids off on A/C or car repairs while having free rent in their parents basement.

I think the more appropriate title would be, "children who have parents too busy with their own lives will not perform well in school"

I just put off homework last night.....but the home work is for grad school so saying stupid might be a stretch.

doesn't really discredit the article though because I am sure my grades would be far better if I replaced all my gaming time with study time. But in the real world if I never played games I would replace the time spent gaming with something else, drugs, music, sports, TV, or what ever else that is not studying.

And they specifically excluded girls.

Might as well say DISTRACTIONS AND SHINY OBJECTS COMBINED WITH SHITTY PARENTING MAY HINDER LEARNING IN CHILDREN.

Video games don't hinder learning, not having self-discipline does.

The headline is far more sensational than the study and what the researchers say. You guys should really go actually read the article before ranting about parents and other crap.

This absolutely isn't just some mindless hate on video games study, and they don't jump to conclusions.

If you spend your time playing video games instead of studying you will get poorer grades. What a surprise.

a lack of knowledge is not stupidity, it is ignorance.

Steve's the only one who used the term "stupid." Other than some article commenters. E.g. "Who funded this stupid study?"

Thank you.

I definitely think that the video games themselves do not hinder learning but the addiction to it does. A lot of kids spend way too much time playing games and it surely hurts their studies.

The article really doesn't say much. Like how much time did they play, what type of games, etc. I would guess that if the family didn't own any video games, and then someone GAVE them a PS2, it would likely be heavily used.

If your kid is playing video games, watching TV, surfing the net, etc, so much that it interferes with thier school work or sleep, then you'll have a problem.

I didn't play video games as a kid since they didn't exist outside of the arcade, and I was to poor to afford the arcade :(

My daugher has access to a Playstation, a Wii, a DS, and lots of computer games. She's been using the computer since she was 2, yet she's a straight "A" student.

And yes, it's all about proper parenting, not if or if not they play computer games.

I wonder where the studies about intelligent kids getting bored in class and never applying themselves are...

There is a deeper issue that a lot of you are missing and that is the devaluation of males in this society.

^ I like this

I'm with nutzo, it's about proper parenting.

Back in high school my group of friends were assaulted with all the gaming goodness the late 90s-early 2000 had to offer *quake 1 3, Half-life, TF, CS, DoD, SC, Tribes 1 2, Ultima Online* just from the top of my head for PC only, I don't even want to get into the time we spent on consoles and arcade machines we played in elementary-middle school as well.

We all had some honors classes as well as some useless AP (don't take these courses, kids) some had sports/music/random crappy after school activities. The only real drawback we faced was a constant lack of sleep :D but we all finished our schoolwork as quickly as possible in order to hangout or play games all the sooner.

My group of friends and I all had the same guidelines drilled in by our parents: finish schoolwork first so you can play, hangout, or even cause trouble but don't ever get caught.
With this and some self-discipline K-12 was a cakewalk, anything after that is another story.

Honestly if kids are struggling throughout K-12, they are entering a world of pain when life really begins.

Demonizing an article that is not demonizing video games to please the fanatics that don't read to click on your site is not Stupid is plain shameless.

How about I do a similar study with identical numbers, 64 healthy boys, only this time on childhood obesity. Give 32 access to lots of empty calories and junk food while the others will go on as normal. I will then come to the conclusion that empty calorie foods cause obesity. Ignoring that it was a lack of control on the part of the parents and the children to instead push forward my agenda which I will fervently deny exists.

There is a deeper issue that a lot of you are missing and that is the devaluation of males in this society.

Especially white ones. We are this generation's scapegoats.

I am not sure how to take this study without more data. Like how long the kids played the PS1 each day, or how much parental supervision the children in question had, what their IQ was prior to the beginning of the study, which if any learning disabilities any of the kids may have had, etc.

Without all the info it's hard to believe what a study says, since all too often, the end results get twisted by one agenda or another.

The problem with this study is that it's focusing on boys aged 6 to 9.

The boys did not have previous learning or behavioral problems.

Are learning and behavioral problems really that apparent with that age group?

The study also doesn't go on to find out if this is a temporary displacement or if there's any long-term effects (specifically from video games). In that case, you could say that playing outside produces the same results. ...or even doing chores around the house.

The problem with this study is that it's focusing on boys aged 6 to 9.

That isn't a problem at all. They are testing a video games affect on child development.

And yes, it's all about proper parenting, not if or if not they play computer games.

Then to you I ask this: What is proper parenting? How much time should you let you're kids play video games? You can speculate on what you THINK is correct but you really don't have any actual evidence to back up you're claims. This study sounds like the first in a line of studies to determine how much is too much. So no, it isn't about proper parenting because we have no fucking clue what proper actually is. The study makes no mention of the children slacking off on homework or housework AT ALL. What it DOES talk about is that the increase in video games led to a decrease in extracurricular activities. Forcing your children to do extracurricular activities isn't proper parenting.

Now I realize most people here would rather just make stupid sarcastic remarks that completely ignore reality, but come on guys, seriously.

Oh look, a sensational headline to bait the flames

where does the study said it proves that gamers are stupid?

show me he exact quote. Oh wait, it doesn't exist because that's not what the study says. Do we need more fact-twisting in headlines? Are there not enough already at news sites? What good does this do?

Proper is doing their homework and chores. what time they have left after that can be spend with games, friends, goofing around, playing sports, etc until it's time to go to bed.

i is teh stupids, too stupid to click on the article and reads it, I need Steve to cut and paste, I cannot find correct mouse button, i try to do the right clicks, but nothing happen, the stupid story won't come up

I'm an innocent victim, please send help

If this study would have been performed 20 years ago, ceteris paribus, it probably would have shown just the opposite. Being a gamer back then was completely different than being a gamer now.

Could be a cultural thing as well, my friends and I were forced to do extracurricular activities by our parents. School school school! We all despised it and would've rather played more video games or hangout and such, but the real reward our parents gave us was that we had the freedom to enjoy ourselves once we took care of any schoolwork. As a result, my friends and I have a great deal of love and respect for each others parent(s).

I do believe there is such a thing as proper parenting and it will be different for each child hence no definitive handbook. I would like to think my parents as well as the parent(s) of all my close friends have raised us properly.

Well, now that a completely unbiast review has been done, I guess our society will need to evolve beyond forms of entertainment that do not provide a strong educational experience including video games and all musical songs that don't teach you the alphabet, numbers, historical events or science facts. Sorry, Metallica.
