Hi guys,

when it comes to apple stuff im kind of a noob, i have an ipod touch, and that is about it. Thing is, a coworker might want to sell me a first gen MBA (1.8 GHz, SSD) for 300 bucks. (actually he can buy it from an acquintance, but isnt sure if he wants it himself).

What kind of lifespan can i reasonably expect from this MBA? if it works correctly for a few years then i think it would be worth the cash, even if i dont instantly get a woody when thinking about using one of his Steveness' devices.

In terms of hardware specs / functionality this will do just fine for what it will be, it wont have to do heavy lifting or whatever

MBA = Macbook Air? If thats what your talking about then 300 is a steal...and if you dont want it ill buy it!

The MBA was ment to be used as a netbook...and a powerful one at that. It can handle music playing video and web browsing...should be plenty powerful enough for another several years for web browsing

I doubt he'll sell it for 300. the SSD alone costs $300+ (can that even fit in the Air?)

If you can get it for $300, do so immediately, that's way too low of a price. The original MBAs had a 64GB SSD, and they definitely fit in there! Price on one of those is almost worth the drive alone, although I don't think that was a particularily fast SSD.

Here's some more info for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Air

EDIT: make sure there is nothing wrong with it, this smells way too good to be true

Yeah it sounds way too good to be true, honestly. You should make sure there isn't anything wrong with it ( like if it's laced with anthrax or something) before you buy it. But even if there is anthrax, you could probably clean it up pretty well. Definitely buy it.

Sounds like a great deal, is this coworker/their acquaintance someone you trust?
Just curious as that laptop is worth 3x what is being asked for it.

shit, if there's anthrax in there, that's even MORE of a steal

lol, no anthrax (or if there is, im screwed anyway, my coworker brought it to work yesterday)

The thing looks OK, i screwed around with it for half an hour or so, it could do with a fresh OS install i think (i HATE a cluttered dock with a pashion, just give me the basic software i need). From what my coworker tells me, the guy selling it just has money to burn, and it spend a lot of its life in a drawer, they just replaced it because it was 'old'

And i know it is a tremendous deal, and i've been waiting for a cheap entry into apple-land (and cursing apple at every mini-upgrade when they improve X, and invariably screw Y up), so from that point of view this is ideal. The thing holding me back is the fact that i am already drowning in computers (desktop, dev-server, file-server, laptop, eee, work-laptop and that is just what i use, i have two more machines collecting dust, and not even counting my GFs systems), and im not sure spending 300 on yet another computer is a smart thing to do...

come to think of it, if i dont like it i can ebay it for 600 and make a killing...

Sorry, I'm not familiar with hard drives. So you can't fit a regular laptop hard drive there? It's basically SSD only?

No. You just need to use a 1.8" HDD with it. Normal laptop drives (SSD/HDD) are 2.5". Desktop drives are 3.5".
