Steam.. are they dropping the ball?

Day 1 is still not over.

Aren't these "exclusives" just stuff you'll unlock pretty fast just playing the game? We all eventually get the squad rush, I don't want it bad enough to give cash to Gamestop. Most exclusives are awful trash, so I don't let them dictate who I get my game from.

I am not counting on getting the full game downloaded in time for me to try it out today.
Since i will only be able to start the download when i get home after work tonight, at which time the Internet will be slow, and steam will probably also be slow.

Yes the so called "limited edition" which everyone gets, only unlocks stuff that anyone can get from just playing the game. So really its not all that special.

However the extra game mode, and the extra gun skin was one small "special" offer not given out by steam. While not of great importance it just points out how other distributors worked harder to try and get clients, while steam did not bother at all to get any steam only specials. Again not a big difference, but still a difference none the less.

Exactly, Steam prices = rip-off. Steam are tied to publisher set prices

I refuse to buy from Steam when I can save a third off the RRP by buying elsewhere.

Only the truly lazy (or rich) would pay more just for the convenience
Almost every game I have I've bought or backed up on Steam for very little, especially after their sales. The convenience of having one, simple program and interface to back up everything and be able to access my games from anywhere far outweighs any extra I might pay (which is generally nothing, hell I even save most of the time). The last several games I've bought on Steam I've gotten for significantly less than retail (Borderlands for $34, Global Agenda for $34, STALKER: CoP for $20), downloaded directly to my PC, and I didn't even have to bother going to the store. Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about and are crying over nothing.
Why do guys even effing care? It's coming out in like 3 hours. So whoopdidooda, you were not able to play at midnight. Great fucking deal. How old are you guys??? Seriuously, is there some kind of price or some special unlock when you play at midnight? Get a life for fucks sake.
A-fucking-men. Talk about an addiction.

Yea, I'm going to have this game for... well forever since it's tied to my Steam account. If it's typical of new DICE release it's be a much better game after the first patch. I plan to play MW2 tonight and download BF:BC2 while I sleep.

One place to see/launch/backup/restore/buy my games, friends list, etc... Steam is popular for a reason and stuff like this is always forgotten literally minutes after new titles unlock. And if you wait for sales, which I usually do except for multiplayer titles my friends are all getting, you never have to pay retail. I have not seen any real negative about Steam in a long time and definitely nothing that would make m abandon the service or suggest they are "dropping the ball".

Just unlocked on Steam but: "The Steam servers are currently too busy to handle your request". :(

EDIT: Huzzah! After constantly selecting "Install game" it has gone through. I'm on a 3mb DSL connection and Steam is somehow showing me using 420KB/s download for it. It normally maxes out at around 320KB/s. :)

I wish you would quit believing that bullshit. Simple fact is, I can go to any Meijir or Walmart on Tuesday morning, usually 1 am, and buy the game. And will do so as the last 3 big releases have been a waiting game.

Steam is the service, period. It IS VALVES JOB on ITS SERVICE to help get everything in line for release. This happened with Valve's own release of L4D 2. DICE AND VALVE know what it takes to release this through STEAM. Why was this not in place over the weekend???????? And fact is, I PAID FOR THE GODDAMN GAME, IT SHOULD BE ON MY PC ON MARCH 2nd! Not when the fuck they get around to it! PERIOD! Quit kissing these companies asses like a goddamn fan boy.

Valve NEEDS to be held responsible. Not like they are pumping out new titles left and right either the slow bastards. No, we got Mods L4D1/2 for game releases from Valve and add-ons to TF2. No Episode 3 yet. No new version Source. This is why people with always want some form of Media i.e. DVD over streaming content. Put the power back in your hands, buy the damn disk.;)

Valve made no guarantees about resolving others' impatience. ;)

lol, figures it unlocks just as I went back to work

I started mine while I'm home for lunch. It's settled at 1.5mb/s, it'll be done for hours before I'm back to play.

I love steam, no need to store or worry about disks. If I reinstall I just login and download them all again pretty quickly. Plus the whole friends list/Community aspect of it is great!

I was skeptical when they first launched it but I love it now, I can't believe all the people throwing a fit because BC2 was a few hours late. God forbbid you miss out on a couple hours of gaming, must be the end of the world:eek:

But I guess that's just how that generation is becoming....

All prices being equal, I'd pick impulse over steam. I just want to play the game, not have some 3rd party app doing things in the background.

That said, I wouldn't say they dropped the ball. They are alright.

Like keeping your games up to date?

Tweeted that its on Steam!
Did you also tweet that you posted here about your tweeting that it's on Steam, and will you tweet about how you tweeted a tweet that you posted here about your tweeting that it's on Steam?

You're right, but there's old timers like us who like to get what we pay for. I don't appreciate paying for the "luxury" of Steam and then finding out I could have just picked the game up from the local store.

The whole premise of Steam is that it's an electronic content delivery system and the lack of a pre-load on this game and MW2 just reinforces the fact that there's no real benefit any more of Steam as a way to avoid having to go to the store.

Steam doesn't also put the DRM notice like they used to in green, on the right side anymore.

BUYER BEWARE

Read through the entire page for the game you are about to buy. Bioshock 2 and BC2 both have their DRM put at the bottom in caps as the "fine print".

And I trusted you, Valve :(

Edit: rflcptr, it wasn't before today. I can show you a few threads on the official Steam forums anyway to prove my point. But I still caved in and got BC2, even with DRM, it's still pretty mild, and for what's the game is worth, I'll go through a hoop or two to play it.

Actually I meant to say someone tweeted it was on steam, I just use it to check on steam deals lol. I'm no twit!

Oh please. Look on the right side of this store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/17300/
3rd-party DRM: SecuROM™

I'm still going to buy games from steam when they have sales and what-not, but for the next big release I preorder I'm going to try out direct2drive. MW2 2 days later than retail then this are my first 2 experiences of preordering off steam and will likely be my last

Yeah it's the difference of hours but the whole point of preordering a game is to be able to play as soon as possible, or do people preorder games for some other unknown reason?

I can see if they didn't get it out till later tonight or even the following day but a few hours? When most likely most people are at work or getting ready to go to work anyways. It just seems childish to me, then again some are just real demanding people to begin with.

I have used steam since they first started it and this is the first time I have experienced it, things happen that are out of our control....That's life, in the end the benefits of steam outweigh the possibility of a game being a few hours late on release day.

Personally I mostly use steam for demos and cheap games. Im not sure I've ever spent more than $10 on a steam game

I think we're discussing two different issues. You think I'm complaining about the game "coming out" late. My only complaint is that pre-loads didn't happen while they did for EA and D2D.

I pay and get Steam games to get the luxury of being able to preload and just start the game. If Steam doesn't offer preloading, what's the point? I could have bought the game with box, media, and manuals and manually installed it.

So for $50 or whatever I paid for BC2, I get no physical media and have to now wait for the game to download once I get home tonight.

See what I'm saying? I wasted my money. Shame on me.

But...they never promised a pre-load. In fact, no one had heard a peep about it until the game devs announced on twitter that they were having a problem with it.

Valve and DICE dropped the ball on the preload. There should've been one whether they said there would be one or not.

If Steam didnt say there would be a preload, they just told you there wouldnt be one. Steam is absolutely the best service out there for this as it stands right now. Not only do I not have to worry about scratched or missing disks, older games they put on there service work with my computer now.

All of you complaining about Steam need to grow up and learn that things dont always happen the way you want them to. Sometimes you just got to wait a little bit to get what you want.

Steam gives shitty service for once, so we need to grow up... makes sense.

Uhh it's still ALL on EA, blame them. It's a business and whatever deals they had going down is stuff we don't know.

Great, who cares about preload right now. I won't even be able to play the game until tomorrow. Steam DROPPED THE BALL

What kind of speeds were you expecting on the release of such an anticipated game?

But, there's still hope for you if you wanna play it today:
- Opt out of the UI beta, reverting to the previous.
- Under Settings -> Downloads, select another location to download from. I picked San Jose and have finished.

How is this Steam's fault? It's all dependent on the publisher/developer to provide preload data. Yeah, it sucks that the download is taking forever but that is what you get when you buy online. Want it immediately? Then buy the box version.

I'm so tired of people complaining about prices on Steam. They don't control the price! The publisher does! Upset about prices? Contact the publisher.

Wow, they dropped the ball on one game and this is the reaction? Some people really need to get a grip.

if you dont like it shop somewhere else. it is as simple as that

I bought retail copy of SupCom2, I have an install disk.
I have been trying to install this game for over 3 1/2 hrs and it is only @ 35%.

My internet connection is 20/5, why is this taking so long?

I was hugely skeptical concerning Steam when it first came out but over the years it has become almost the only way I buy games anymore.

I've only read through half the QQ and skimmed through some other posts, buuuut I thought I'd share my experience.

At 1:00 P.M. I began downloading BC:2 via the Toronto server (I'm in Wisconsin) and it downloaded at a solid 2.0 MB/s in which case I was online and playing by roughly 1:30 P.M.

Soo I have to say that I am pleased with Steam.

Same here. I use both Steam and Impulse with a majority of my games on Steam. I figured they wouldn't do a pre-load for BC2 since they didn't announce anything but that doesn't stop me from using the service. Like darksonic said, if you want the game the minute it comes out, go to a b&m store.

It's been less than a day and people are crying. Do you really want to play right away with all the kinks and knots that are going to obviously happen, like any other online game?

I downloaded perfectly find this afternoon between 1.5 and 1.9MB/sec. That's MB, not Mb. Blame your router, blame your ISP, blame someone traffic shaping your internet; it's not Steam or Valve's fault, amen.

The only way I can see Steam "dropping the ball" is with servers not being ready for the release, but even then I can forgive them because I didn't expect it to download really fast. Go use a service that nobody uses if you want it really fast or get it from B&M.

If you want to see some real crying head to the Steam forums when something doesn't go right. "OH MY GOD MY EARLY ACCESS TO THE LEFT 4 DEAD 2 MULTIPLAYER DEMO ISN'T WORKING I WANT A REFUND BAWWWWWW." Makes me fucking sick.

I did buy the game at a brick and mortar store.
I began installing it at 3 pm est, at this writing it is 7:20 est and I am only @ 47%...

You guys find this acceptable?
Good even?
