I have seen people change the name of their baby, get tattoos and other stunts to curry favor with a company but I have never seen a town the size of Topeka do it.

Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten signed a proclamation Monday calling for Topeka to be known for the month of March as "Google, Kansas — the capital city of fiber optics." Bunten told city council members about the proclamation prior to a special meeting of the council held at noon at City Hall to hear the first reading of a proposal that wasn't linked to local efforts to convince Google to make Topeka a test site for an ultrafast Internet connection.

someone is clearly delusional..No one cares about Topeka, not even the people who live there. There is precisely Zero chance of the Google test being done there.

you sir may PISS OFF, i live within 80 miles of Topeka and i think its great that we finally have a chance to be part of something big.

Its crazy that people on both the coasts think that we here in the heartland are unimportant and that we shouldnt get to be a part of technology.

What most coast people forget too is that if it werent for us people out here in the boonies, you guys wouldnt have much to eat as far as beef, chicken, pork, grain, etc unless you wanted to import it.....

So you can take your delusional comment and stick it right where the sun doesnt shine

I appreciate this comment. I live in Olathe KS, and Topeka is a great place to go.

I lived in St Joseph, Missouri a few miles outside Kansas City for 11 years and you hear a lot about Topeka in the Great Plains.

You guys have Jayhawks, don't you? Seems to be the most acclaimed team out there, though I'm not sure what sports they are. Never got around looking it up.

Lawrence has the Jayhawks, but we share with Topeka.
I look at this as a publicity deal, but hope it opens some doors.

There are some nice things about Kansas, it is true. My favorite feature is the roads that lead away from it. :D

I live by Topeka, and think it's a huge ghetto. That's just me.

But it would be cool if google came and helped our capital.

Hey, it isn't just the coasts. I'm from Missouri and I think Kansas sucks :p (I'm just teasing you)

I appreciate this comment. I live in Olathe KS, and Topeka is a great place to go.

I was in Olathe for about 10 days for work last year. 10 days and 7 of them I ate BBQ (mostly at Oklahoma Joe's). Kansas rocks the BBQ and that trumps whatever negativity anyone can think of. :D

Good for Kansas if they can pull it off. :)

Anyone hating on Kansas has obviously never been to southeastern colorado... Its flatter with crappier soil and less rain

I live in Topeka, would be nice to see this happen. Doubt it will but would be nice.

Believe it or not we have electricity, indoor plumbing, stores etc etc... friggin big town asshats can kiss my ass, especially Dekoth. We're also the capital of the state.

Not a bad place to live, not too small and not too big.

Living within 80 miles, != living in. I said nothing about Kansas, just Topeka as I spent some time there. Sorry, that place is a crap hole of a city. The rest of Kansas generally is fantastic.

*yawn* see above..been there done that. Honestly if you think that city is anything other then a hole, you really need to get out more. Even Little Rock Arkansas is better then Topeka and I never want to be forced to live in that city again.

That said, I repeat. Topeka has precisely zero chance of being the chosen test grounds. That has nothing to do with them being the "Heartland" of the country either.

I'm going to have to agree with Dekoth here, I live in Overland Park, KS - only been to Topeka once and man that place is a shit hole. When you're driving through it doesn't look like the kind of place that would be a state capital.

The rest of Kansas is really nice though (great BBQ indeed).

I highly doubt that they will get this "test net" - but if they do they damn well better blanket the KC area in it lol

Not gonna get involved in the whole 'Heartland' 'Topeka is great' controversy, just wanna state that the 'Google, Kansas' thing seems to be generatiing a whole lotta evil for the 'do no evil' *cough* company.

Also in the Kansas City Metro area here (Overland Park) and I agree Topeka is nothing exciting. There is zero chance they will get the test bed but if by some miracle they do it better get here...

Not too sure how this will help their chances... Free advertising for Google? They've got that in aces already. Looking like tools? Yeah, just a bit.

I had no idea there were so many Topekans on these boards. I also live and work in Topeka. I am happy to see our community taking some initiative to get something good for the city, I just wish they would take this initiative to do something for ourselves, rather than trying for a far fetched freebie from Google. I'm not sure what our chances are for this.

Google isn't involved in this renaming, it is something the city is doing to try and get Google's attention.

I with they would too. I work with a lot of city and county projects for them. Seen some odd stuff. Not as odd as they are here in Lawrence, but pretty close.
