Hi all,

A work computer that is using an i7-860, stock intel heatsink, and a Thermaltake Lanbox is running exceptionally hot. Ambients are fairly cool, idle is approx 45-50C, P95 will raise temps to (and probably higher than) 90C as reported in RealTemp in fairly short order.

Reseating the HSF did little to help. Yes I know about thermal paste application etc, however this is the first time I've worked on a machine with the stock HSF in a Lanbox, and this HSF is a much smaller version than that which the i7-920 uses.

I'm about to just move it to a tower case and put a decent HSF on it, but have a hard time imagining that these temps are normal even given the less than ideal cooling of the Lanbox and stock HSF. . .does anyone have experience running this setup without issues? Are there issues with the temp sensors on these?

How are temps when the case is open? Are your voltages ok? Is the cpu fan spinning and at 100% when it gets hot?

that's what i got when i had stock HSF on my 860....quickly got rid of that POS. it's a really weak cooler. tiny bit of copper at contact point and short aluminium fins

The stock heatsink is crap (I hated it on the 860 I had) get another one. If you intend on keeping it, make sure the pins are full inserted. They are tricky, and a complete pain to install.

That's pretty much what I wanted to know. . .is the stock HSF really *that* bad? I guess the answer is yes!

Thanks all,

-Brett
