AVP thoughts and impressions

What's the point of a demo if it doesn't represent the final product? lol

I'll give you a part of a slice of cheese pizza to advertise my supreme pizza.

I don't think I should buy a game to see what I was missing in the demo... The demo should leave me in a state of craving more, which it failed to deliver imo.

Playing as a marine utilizing teamwork actually worked out great against the aliens and preds....

it would be nice to experience teamwork but the demo is only ffa deathmatch... or am i wrong?

Well you are actually correct, and during my 1st few games I was killing off my same spieces, and ppl with michs were like "f-you u asshole, and go f- yourself when I would blast them...

so then the next time when I would spawn as a marine, I would find another marine and come up to him and turn around and watch his six..Then after he would get what I was doin' it actually got really fun, taking preds and aliens out, utilizin' some team work...As I posted on this thread earlier, I fraped some vids and uploaded to you tube the exact "teamwork" I am talking about....Go back a page and click on my you tube links.

Which is EXACTLY why this demo is so ultimate phail. It's possibly one of the worst demos I've experienced in recent memory compared to the potential of the final product.

The demo is FFA DM, an AWFUL mode for a public demo, especially in this day and age where the majority of popular titles are objective based or at least team based. That said, I've run across numerous groups, Marines and Aliens mostly, who band together and fight to maintain the true spirit of the game ... which DM sorely lacks. 7 MODES, REBELLION! Why FFA DM?? I mean, I understand including it in the title for those who enjoy nonsensical mayhem and idolize personal kill count, but it's the mode that least epitomizes what AvP is all about. Terrible choice for the demo.

They should have title this release as an open beta... I'm hoping the final product is a lot more polished.

game could use some polish...overall gameplay is not bad...although I still find it difficult to control the alien movements at times...

an example of the perfect game demo was Batman: Arkham Asylum...I had no interest in buying that game until after I played the demo...the demo made me want to buy the game

the AvP demo does the opposite...I was planning on buying it but now I'm going to wait and see...they should have just not released anything rather then turn people off with this alpha level demo

A little info guys:

Apparently, the demo is the same one people played at E3 2009, which explains the minimal options and matchmaking only, and why the console demo is quite identical.

For now, use the demo to check out Rebellions new take on the games pace, the three races and how they handle, and keep in mind that the actual game will be 10months more optimized

First impressions are it's a massive fail.

Matchmaking - Matchmaking is shit, it always has been shit and it always will be shit. Before I even consider anything else I am completely put off buying this game because of this alone.

Console Port - It's a console port plain and simple, all the levels are painfully basic, so are the effects, models, textures, everything. There are little to no options in the menu to make it look nicer. DX11 is not going to save this game.

Deathmatch - Deathmatch for the demo is retarded, marines fighting other marines...makes it feel like quake but with the occasional alien attacking you.

With all the exciting developers talk of tailoring this for the PC, I was really looking forward to a decent multiplatform title but this is just console through and through..

This game is actually a lot of fun if you can get past the horrible first impression it makes.

And it's awesome when several Marines band together to fight off the Aliens. DM wasn't the best choice for the demo, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite unique (compared to everything else out there) and just as good as the old AvP games.

"This demo is based on pre-release code and does not reflect the quality of the finished product"

It's a DEMO and it's main purpose, if anything, is for users to feel out how the 3 classes work. It's not that bad looking for being DX9 @ 1680x1050 4xaa/16xaf. The mouse input isn't as bad as it's been made out to be and is far superior than Far Cry 2, Bioshock and the slew of other console ports that have fucked up input. I'm a super low sensitivity player and I managed to find a sense that was comfortable enough for me and I can't say that about many other FPS games today. In the age of the useless 18000DPI mice we have today you'd think that games would be designed with a slower input range because it's much easier to jack up the DPI.

I play with 450DPI and most games that aren't based on some form of the Quake or Source engine's lowest sensitivity is usually WAY to fast.

You are all bitch and complain so much. Almost makes me hate PC gaming. What's the last PC game any of you have really enjoyed?

I actually had a good time in the couple of matches I played and now I have to decide if I want to purchase Bioshock 2 or this with this weeks check.

Dragon Age Origins, that was also a multiplatform title and Bioware made it awesome for the PC, proving that it can be done if the circumstances is right.

One Word Horrible .....
Controls.....HUGE lag
Graphics....STATIC LIGHTING LOW TEXTURES
Sound....PLASTCISH
Did anyone notice crap Character ANIMATION....is so bad, makes me laugh :)

It's a demonstration of final product not beta( like BC2)
AvP great Series, its OVER.

Shame,'cos was thinking of getting this one...NO MORE

I could see myself enjoying the single player aspect but not for $50...is every level going to be in the same indoor cave type of setting?...or will there be some variety, like outdoor battles?

they also seem to be covering up the less then stellar graphics by making everything so dark and pasty looking

Rebellion hasn't made a good game since the original AVP. The odds that this game would be great were low to begin with.

Fail, on an epic level. You don't release a demo in this state. All it does is leave a negative impression and judging from the posts that is all they have managed to do.

Combine that with what is perhaps the worst game in history, Rogue Trooper, and that makes it even worse and leaves little to no faith that they can pull this off.

This is so stupid and self sabotaging I'm speechless.

What kind of morons would really put out a demo of material as old as you're describing here? Do they WANT this game to not sell well? They've done a great job with that concept so far because I know I'm one of a bunch of people in a "hold" pattern right now.

If you want an example of a GOOD demo: How about the first AVP game from 1999, which had a demo I spent countless hours exploring? Or what about AVP2, which had a demo with one short mission for each species, and a separate multiplayer demo?

This is like getting one of those free samples at the supermarket. Only the free sample is a little pebble of feces... you pop it in your mouth and start retching and they're like "don't worry it's only a sample. You'll definitely still want to buy a whole box!"

First AVP had the whole first level of the Marine campaign if I remember right. Perfect demo. Very polished and not much different from the final version.

I played the new AvP demo last night. The matchmaking system flat out sucks. For a Marine they sure move SLOWER then molasses during the winter and I'm not just talking about walking. The sensitivity of the marine is all screwed up in my opinion. It definitely feels like a console port. Hopefully that gets fixed...

Never got to play any other race due to rage quitters, disconnects and match making just flat out sucking hard.

Overall I'll hold judgment on this game till the final version because it's fucking AvP!

However, I will say that Rebellion should be ashamed of themselves for releasing shit like this and calling it a demo. If the retail version turns out to be like this well I'll spend my $50 elsewhere thank you.

Wahhhhhhh wahhhhhhhhhh

Sorry had to, but like I said before, I will wait on some reviews to get some more feedback on it. I enjoyed the demo probably cause I played with friends. I played the older AVP games and loved them so I will give this one more credit on a old demo.

@ AXL, Is that from a forum or from yourself? Any more info on those pictures? Meaning setting wise.

Anyways time to get some bk :D

Big fan of AVP2, but this demo flat out sucks balls. UI and menus are horrible and look like what one would expect from a shitty console port, the server menu is crap, the graphics are quite frankly mediocre, the level design looks like something from an old UT99 map, mouse acceleration/smoothing is turned on by default and cannot be turned off (I fucking hate it when idiotic dev's enable this on PC games!), the auto-aim is unnecessary, and to top it off there is no crouch.....WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU REMOVE CROUCH FROM AN FPS!?!

I don't know what rebellion were smoking when they were spewing their PR crap about PC being the lead development platform and wanting to make an improved version of AVP1.

Someone should take the license off them and give it back to monolith, at least they have a proven track record!

Now plan to cancel copies pre-ordered for myself and 2 brothers. What a waste of anticipation :(:eek:

Thanks for the screen caps! Wow I was a fan of the original AVP. I think I'm going to wait on further reviews and impressions before I buy.

I only played one round yesterday, i would have played more but there were a couple of morons that had thier mics not muted and had a shitload of static waiting for game. they didnt even say anything.

anyway the actual game was pretty good for a dx 9 demo. i played marine, and the gun was good, although not great. I was like 6th overal, mostly because i didnt know how to use stims or sprint. The radar is mind-blowingly awesome and scary. the ticks and the beeps was freeking me out and it was very cool. I think the single player will kick ass.

still waiting to see about other MP modes though.

i hate most now that u cant change class, u spawn as alien but i wanna try predator but icant.. not fun :(

I understand that things like the graphics and gameplay may not be a full representation in this demo but I swear if the damn controls and mouse acceleration combined with a lack of crouch are in the full game then massive fail indeed with this one.

Completely disappointed with this so far in every single aspect. I never got a chance to play AVPGold back in the day but I absolutely loved AVP2's SP/MP I would play anything from Team DM to Alien life cycle and face hug people all day to rage. :D

I really hoped that Monolith would've been tacked to do this game instead of Rebellion. Yes, Monolith has seen better days than lately, (didn't like FEAR2) but I still tend to trust them a lot more.

Remember when the L4D2 demo came out and everyone cried foul? That demo was an incomplete picture of the full game, but I still bought it on release because I trust Valve. And that trust was rewarded, L4D2 is solid game and I didn't regret the purchase at all.

But I don't trust Rebellion. And I certainly trust them less after this demo- which has me leaning more towards ME2 or Bioshock 2 for my single game buy this month. But seeing this demo as a fail is kinda short-sighted. All it's done is kill any release-day excitement I had for AvP. I still want to play the game, but I'm on a wait & see tack now.

I haven't played as a marine yet... there is no crouch? That is moronic!

yeah that's annoying...what bugs me even more is that you cannot fire your weapon while running...that's stupid because the alien and predator are much quicker then the Marine so he should be able to fire on the run

if you can only get one, get ME2

your welcome :)

You know, there are already two other AVP threads here at the very least. In any case the game isn't very good so far. Controls don't feel right, the graphics are lacking, and it is horribly unbalanced. If the game does succeed at anything though its sound. The game has solid sound with the effects pulled right from the films of both franchises.

Yeah, but I haven't even finished ME1 yet. (and it doesn't look like I'll finish it soon either) It's hard to ignore ME2's glowing praise (both in press and boards), that's why it's on the maybe-buy this month list.
