if you don't need it to output hd audio over hdmi, is this a [H]ot deal?
 
I'd say it's a good deal. Yamaha is good brand in the receiver world. Though this is a low end model, it's probably a cut above the usual low end stuff at this price point. Plus it's from a trustworthy reseller with a good return policy.

This is a good deal for a cheap reliable receiver for a small room/gaming/ht/music

Get some good bookshelves to match like Bstock av123 ELT525 or energy take 5's
 
I've always wanted to get an inexpensive receiver for S/PDIF and ditch my current crappy speakers. I might bite on this one.
