Athlon II X4 620 w/ mobo $60 AR @Fry's

Hmm, that looks like it would be a nice cheap upgrade from my e4300. I guess that board isn't too great for overclocking though? What gains in gaming do you think I would see, if any?

good deal even if you use the motherboard for target practice... but the geforce 6150? i mean i guess it doesnt matter because the cpu can do it all, but kinda lame. it is a good price though

Man, I'd pick one of those up if I had a Fry's near me. Good thing I don't :).

Is that both Proc and Mobo for that price? If so dddddaaaaaammmmmnnnnnn!

well I actually got the same deal for 79 bucks but it had an asus board instead with geforce 8400 and hdmi and everything, and all solid caps I believe, built a system for my brother, the board was 80 and cpu was 105 and got them both for 80 bucks.

We'll I just grabbed one of the deals, my Mom needed an upgrade and this fit the bill. The mobo is crap but prefect for a casual/office setting. And 2 weeks ago I thought the 620 w/ mobo at $90 was hot, but its mobo was a tad better so the price increase was justified.

The only thing bad about Frys, they dont stock any cheap generic ram kits. Mom and Pop computer places usually got them beat in that department, atleast in my neighborhood.

Damn I just paid full price for a 620 at newegg.....And there is a Fry's down the street from me. Too bad I will never ever shop there.

This deal does look pretty tempting, especially for my younger brother on an extreme budget with an 'outdated' rig. How much of a difference would he see in performance (especially in gaming) with this Athlon X2 620 processor vs. his current Intel Core 2 Duo E4500? He is using a Radeon HD4850 by the way. He loved playing GTA4 on the PC and we plan on getting the DLC expansion packs as well. I hear you'll see a good performance upgrade in the game going from dual to quad-core right?

Since he is on a budget, he likes to stretch his purchases as far as possible. He's been using his E4500 for two years now and I'm hoping this would be a good investment for him, especially it being quad-core.

What do you guys think?

statment heard, lol. you don't hate frys I think you just hate your money, sorry. Its where I work but if you haven't worked there you haven't really hated it lol. don't let one bad experience hurt your wallet forever, well I dont know if it really matters in your case.

Here is a comparison of the Athlon II x4 620 vs Core 2 Duo E4500 at stock. The athlon II x4 will destroy the E4500 at stock in anything that takes advantage of all 4 cores and will get 15 to 30% higher frame rates via the processor alone.

That said I know he is on a budget but getting an I5 or a 965 would be a better "gamer cpu". The 620 is designed to be cheap and for "normal people" or "video rendering on the budget", it lacks the cache that would make it a much faster gamer cpu. I have seen the 965 bundled with a 790gx board in the 200 range twice within the last 45 days at frys, and a i5 750 with a crossfire motherboard 220 before rebate.

Notice the frame rate differences between the 620 and the 965

If someone can get one set (or two if you can swing it) I'll buy, pay shipping and give you a little extra for you're able

Wow, sounds like its time to take another trip to frys! (and likely be disappointed by OOS once again)

The CPU alone is almost $100 at the egg.

The board is of course unremarkable and budget. I do like that its IDE + 4 SATA. (alot of budget boards only have 2x SATA)

For those wondering, the board actually does have some OC options.

Based on experience with similar combos from frys, This one should very easily do ~3ghz (233x13 vs stock of 200x13). It will not likely do ~3.4 (13x266). (I think the HT gets outta whack) Something around 250 its probably realistic.

seriously... if it weren't for the fact that I already bit on the combo deal for the 550BE + gigabyte mb two weeks ago this would have been tempting. Just happy it that my PII 550 unlocks 4 cores and can get to 3.6 on air... waiting for new tubing to see if it can go higher on water

You guys think these will be good for htpc? Would I need a dedicated vidcard for hd?

yes, you will need a Vid Card with Hardware Acceleration enabled. (anything current can)

You can do it for as little as $13.50 :D

The main con with a card like this is no HDMI (can use a DVI -> HDMI adapter but you have no audio pass thu on it)

Anyway, went to the Roseville and Sacramento store. All OOS :( There were a few CPUs at Roseville, a few boards at Sacramento but they gotta sell as combos.

Oh well. There will be plenty more other combo deals in the future.

At least no one posts about these combos in deal and tech type forums, otherwise they would really sell out quick. ;)

I hope there's still some in stock in the Houston location on 45 North. ;)

this was posted more than 4 hours earlier at Slickdeals which has a million times the traffic as this subforum.

Its not like Fry's combo deals are a big secret anyways.

There are guys on slickdeals on the East Coast that post as soon as their paper arrives.

Are you sure???

I dont believe you.

What the heck. I went to Fry's in Manhattan Beach, CA and they said all of the CPU+motherboard combos sold out over the weekend. They never seem to have these kinds of deals when I go there. :(

Good News: I have 2 Frys stores near me.

Bad News: Both are OOS. One store had 12 CPUs in for the week so says the guy working in hardware using the inventory system. He said that the inventory system gets updated weekly not sure if that's right but I didn't bother to further question him. The store that I was in had the cpu but ran out of the motherboard which was not on reorder.

Frys B&M deals are quite bogus. They advertise amazing deals, and then only stock a minimal amount. It's 100% a bait and switch/just get you in the store gimmick.

They are not bogus, Ive goten tons of them for years now. At one point I had more K7S5A's than I knew what to do with. I still get them all the time. The ads clearly state "Limit one per customer. Limted to quantities on hand. No substitutions. No rainchecks on this item"

Alot of people know about them and they do go quick. Of course they offer them to get you into the store.

So the onboard not good enough then. Darnit. I guess I'll go with this and get hd5450 when it's out. Just hope the fry's near me has the combo in stock.

Sigh. I suppose its not very polite to be sarcastic. That was exactly my point dude. (I even put in the wink)

On a side note, as nice as slickdeals is, its can sometimes be a bit of a cesspool with the competitiveness of posting something first / rep points etc.

I think that's a pretty accurate breakdown. I just upgraded from an e4500 / Intel 965 board to a PII 550BE and unlocked to quad. Runs Dragon Age much nicer.

i got one yest theres a choice between an msi board and biostar. I chose biostar to give it a whirl because it has a million pictures of approvals (yes marketing got to me.). [H] was one of them , but i dont see any review on it.

The CPU's great, the motherboard's cheap, but probably reasonably stable. I would get a 3450 or 4350 for video, however. They often go on sale for $15 shipped after rebate. I've gotten most of my rebates on those cards, and they work excellent for HTPC or budget dual monitor setups I make for people (or myself.)

All three of these are pretty good. Two of them don't even have fans!

If you keep your eye out, you can snag a sale for $15 AR. $20 is not bad, but I've gotten lots of cheapo HTPC cards just by watching the sales.

this has been my experience as well. I've only gone for two different combos over the past few months, but I was able to get both. And it was definitely sunday or later so they'd been on sale for over 2 days.

The problem with radeon cards that I have experienced is that the TV output resolution via Svideo is the same as your monitor's. It's always a 1 to 1 ratio and you can't change it, what if my monitor is a 22 inch LCD and my T.V is a 50 inch projection that can't handle a high resolution? Well it sucked for me because I had that problem, currently looking for an Nvidia card as they alllow different resolutions between your monitor and T.V. FYI
