I just hit 80, I went holy and got 5 glyphs as well as a set of healing gear, greens and blues from the AH and from quests. I don't have a relic or healing trinkets. I'm wondering if theres anything else I should do before I start doing instances. And what instances should I do? should I avoid instances marked green and only do yellow ones? I'm looking to gear up quickly so I can start raiding.

I'm not really new to WoW, I've raided on my mage in the past, but that was over two years ago and I've forgotten A LOT of stuff, and theres been some changes with patches.

start on low end instances and see how you do. If you do well try more difficult ones and so on.

Healing is the most forgiving aspect of running basic instances, at least, so you should be okay there. A moderately geared healer is usually enough to pull off healing the early heroics.

You might try running random heroics for triumph emblems. It's pretty easy to accumulate them quickly, and you can buy a full 5 piece set of T9 gear for 210 emblems of triumph to get you started. The vendors up at the tournament grounds have the 5 piece sets for emblems only, so you don't need the armor drops or trophies to get them.

The dungeon finder won't put you into anything you're not geared for, so you'll probably run a lot of utgarde keep, nexus, or azjol'nerub.

Run the random "normal" instance once a day to get the 2 badges. Then go to Wowhead, look up item slots you need to improve on, ie trinkets, libram etc...Find what dungeon has the item, and run it until you get it. Then move to the next item. Once you feel comfortable healing all the normal (Original LK dungeons, not Toc or ICC), give ToC normal a try and farm it for the healing trinket...Once you can heal ToC normal fine, start queuing for heroics and the normal ICC 5 man stuff. (side note, I found heroics easier to heal than ToC 5 when I first started gearing up my shaman)

Also, look to crafted gear to get a start as well.

Once you gear up from these and the badges you should be able to raid most anything.

EDIT: Also what Spetsdod said, though you will catch some grief from idiots because your gear score isn't over 9000.

You might be okay just jumping into heroics, since people are pretty overgeared for heroics currently and they'll just carry you through.

of course if you don't want to get carried, getting at least all blue healing gear would go a long ways...The easier heroics for a paladin include violet hold and that one with the snake end-boss (gundrak?). Some will say AN, but AN has some nasty poisons that will hurt entry-level paladin healers unless you got a badass shaman with poison cleanse in the group.

Healing is certainly not the most forgiving aspect...good lord, I don't know what Spet is smoking, but if a healer fails at any one time, th group fails. Considering DPS can fail multiple times and the healer and tank can carry them, I would hardly call healing the most forgiving aspect. In fact, if the group wipes the healer is the #1 person to be blamed.

Queue up for a random heroic. That's it.
Try to heal it. If you can't, then don't sweat it. Get booted? Queue up for another random and try again.
If your gear is sub-par, the match-making system will most likely team you up with higher-geared players; making it easier on you.

quit and play STO, that what all the cool kids are doing. you wouldnt want to not look cool right?

Real world instance...just..outside...that..door.

On a side note at what point do wow threads need to start being moved to GM or whatever it is?

I'm not dissing you sir I understand you neeeed to discuss wow, but ...sigh nvm I'll wait for the flame.

thanks for the info guys. my gear must be pretty bad because all the heroics are locked and 4 of the non heroics are locked too.

Most likely. Go do some quests in Icecrown, the rewards are decent. Also, look to the AH for crafted upgrades. Then determine your worse piece of gear, look up replacements on wowhead or thottbot, then go do that quest chain or instance.

You can always set the dungeon group finder to look for normal instances while you go and do quests in the wild for loot and profit. Don't overlook doing Wintergrasps and the occasional BG either and getting some gear that way. It might be PvP gear but it's definently better then greens & AH'ed blues.

Lol scrub.....do what a lot of people do, find a guild or a group of people to latch onto like a leech to basically give you gear.....you know for nothing more then filling a slot and showing up...I know we have always had people we geared for no other purpose then to be a spot filler...even after they were handed all thier tier pieces you really couldn't tell the difference on the damage or healing meters...what I' am trying to say is that you don't even need to know wtf you are doing you could basically faceroll your keyboard for however long the raid lasted...there will be a core group that know wtf they are doing and actually cares about progression over purply and orange gear and they will carry your ass through the content though it is going to be kind of hard to do that right now being that any good guild has been done with all the current content for months and are waiting for the xpac to be released before they start playing again.....

I'm not very familiar with paladin healing, but the last instance I healed on my druid all I did was cast a regrowth on the tank and dps a couple times then autofollowed one of the caster dps around. Most of the tanks are ridiculously overgeared for the encounters. If needed I would just grab a couple mana potions and make sure to eat after every pull, even if it means you'll be racing through that food.

As a small aside I found it humorous to see a WoW Gold selling ad banner on the top while reading this thread.

Farm the random dungeon until you get full teir 9 for whatever spec you use. Wash and rinse and repeat until you get your second spec gear. Find a guild get better gear. About it.

when you guys mention crafted gear, are epics on the AH worth it? I don't mean the ones that cost 1-3k, but the ones that cost under 600g? I've got about 3k gold left.

It depends. Every server is different. I was able to pick up a couple of crafted pieces for my druid (he should be hitting 80 tomorrow night) that were selling for less than the raw mats. Some of the crafted pieces are garbage, some are not. There are also BoEs that are good starter pieces and some that are crap. I don't know enough about pallies to tell you which are worth it and which are not.

The thing to remember, gear and gold are easy to get. Questing = easy gold...gathering professions = easy gold.

i bought a couple pieces of gear lastnight from the AH and unlocked a lot of the heroics, and only 1 of the regulars are locked now.

one of the regulars that got unlocked I did, it was forge of souls. long story short I was embarrassed when it was over, we wiped several times, and then a few times on the last boss because i had to move around and then heal. although everyone in the group had gear as bad as mine except for the tank, so I should give my self some slack. I don't know how most healers are setup, but i've been targeting my group with f2-f3-f4-f5, but when I need to move, I have to take my hand off those keys and use w,s,a,d.

i did two random regulars before that one and had no troubles.

Many use mods like clique, grid, healbot, etc...I use grid then mouse-click target party members then use my heals which I have bound to 1 to 4 and oh snap button macored with heal on 5. I find that I can move with WASD and mouse and hit numbers with out issue, I just use the mouse click to target friendlies.

I have never read such a concise post on all the reasons why WoW sucks.

For the complete opposite experience switch over to EQ. You can have a level 85 paladin, and even in the best guilds you can't have anyone who doesn't know what they are doing on raids because the raid content is actually challenging.

Also, you will never run out of content. EVER.

use maxdps.com as your gear bible, run toc and the icc 5mans nonheroic. you'll get geared in a week or so tops. get the gs mod from curse.com too and follow those scores for what raids to get into. most realms have enough people pugging stuff so that you dont have to join a big guild and shit. im in a 20 person guild and am working on t10 shit and only play 10-15hr a week. the game is easy and i recommend it as a good mmo for people who dont have a lot of time to invest but like that style of game. good luck. hope all these trolls feel better about themselves for putting you down for playing a game that you enjoy. Real nice.

I've got about 24 emblem of triumph from doing a random heroics so far. I guess i'll pick up a head or shoulders piece once i get 45 or 75. and 4 emblem of frost for doing random regulars, i think?

should i stop doing random heroics and focus on toc and icc, as well as a random regular each day?

btw, the trolls are just bored of their 10 year old cs, 3 year old tf2, spam fest cod:mw, console kiddie port cod:mw2, typically dieing breed of fps games.

I'd only farm the regular modes for the gear you need, after doing the random daily heroic.

Look guys, I have been pretty lax in this thread as I am posting in it. To be frank, I agree with some of the sentiments of walking away, go outside, etc... But at the same time, it is a game, if I wasn't playing WoW, I'd be playing something else. Just remember: "Take everything in Moderation, even World of Warcraft." ;)

If you don''t like WoW or any other game, there is no need to go trolling/flaming in every thread that pops up about it.

After hitting 80 I finally got bored and quit. Not sure if I will ever come back.
Too hard to get groups to do pug raids, cant commit to raiding guild so....bye bye!

Catching up on Fringe and doing some home repair/remodeling.
Want to max out my DIY skill, I'm around 350. :)

Ask for actual help from an experienced pally on your server. Do random regular dungeons for gear and to get badges. Spend badges to get your libram, and a couple tier pieces, then some 245 non set gear.
