Which SATA ports to use?

Ok, board is a ASUS P7P55D Deluxe.

I have 6 ports controlled by the P55 chipset, 2 JMicron 322(which I guess use drive expert), and 1 JMicron 363(which I probably won't use).

Here's the dilemma: I have 5 drives and 2 optical(DVD-RW & B-Ray). I have 4 storage drives that I am using and just added a 30GB SSD to the mix for the OS. Also keep in mind that I may add another SSD and run Raid 0 in a few weeks.

I was figuring, with the raid in mind, I would use the 322 for the OS drive? Could these Jmicron's even be used for the optical drives?

Sorry, I have never messed with the onboard hardware controllers before.

Also, for the SSD.... what settings do I want to use?

Thanks

Use the Intel ones first and foremost for the faster devices. In fact if you don't need them, disable the jmicrons.

It looks like that board supports RAID 1, 0, 10 and 5 on the Intel ports, so use those for your OS and most used drives.

I have used jmicron ports for optical drives before, and in my mind that is the only halfway decent use for their products. But if you use your optical drives often, then perhaps put your backup drives onto the jmicron controllers instead.

I guess for starters, I could put all my drives and dvd-rw on the intel controller and my B-Ray on the 363. If I grab another SSD, I'll attack that then.

Well, I'm going to pick up another now, so I'll be running raid from the get go. Anymore input? I'm going to start getting this together tonight.

I'd put the opticals on the JMicron, wouldn't trust your HDDs to it (much less in any fashion of RAID).. At worse it performs poorly and you end up having to get a cheap add-in card, beats any of the alternatives imo. Should be fine for optical drives tho...

Yeah, the P55 controller walked all over the jmicron in the [H] review.

It's been awhile since I ran a raid set-up, and when I did, they were the only 2 drives in the system. I should be able to configure 2 of the P55 sata ports for raid and use the other 4 for storage, yeah?

Thanks. Should I set up the raid, install windows and the drivers, then add my other drives?

Turns out the 622 controller with drive expert can only work with hard drives, 2 in raid or 1 alone....and if wipes the drive. I put my raid and 3 of the storage drives and my dvd drive on the p55. I put my bray player on the other jmicron controller.

Guess its time to build a WHS box.

good advice! if you read my mind like that again, I may have to wear a tinfoil hat for future protection
