I've been traveling a bit more recently and this has caused me to realize I really need to figure out how to remote desktop into my HTPC to adjust recording schedules and be able to download a file if needed. I've used remote desktop software before (We use Dameware at work) so I understand the basics, but I have no idea how to set it up on my HTPC. Are there any tutorials or guides out there that can assist with setting this up? I've never had to setup any thing like this before so I really don't know where to start.

Is your HTPC running Windows or what?

There's plugins to Windows Media Center that actually allows you to change recording schedules via a GUI. Other than that, you'll have to port forward the RDP port, or use LogMeIn.

So what, exactly, do you want to be able to do?

The plugin I'm referring to basically gives you the "Guide" in a web GUI. What else are you looking to do, outside of that?

If the scheduler has a web UI you can do this from anywhere. Otherwise Log Me In would be good, load it on your HTPC, and access it from the web from you phone or laptop. If you must use RDP, you would have to do a little bit of port forwarding on your router, or* set it in the DMZ, which is not a good thing security wise.

The problem with LMI and RDP is it'll shut down Media Center when you connect, because it can't display the glitzy version remotely. So you have to open it back up, which loads a non-glitzy version.

VNC is a way around that, but no matter what remote access tool you use, if the Web GUI worked- that's the best method. Any browser, anywhere can access it.

Whichever application you choose, you will also need to open the appropriate ports on your router/firewall. RDP uses 3389/tcp.

logmein.com is prolly the best option for you.

you could use gotomypc.com too.... but you'd have to pay... and logmein.com is free!

In honor of this thread, I just used logmein to set up a few recordings for my daughter and I in media center. Thanks for the reminder ;-)

+1 for logmein.com

I've been using them for years --both professionally and personally. They are a great company too (if you need to deal with them).
