I just buiilt this computer for a friend.
I had no intention of overcloking it at all
However I just ran CPUid for fun and this is what showed up.
Its an intel I7 @ 2.93ghz

This is the mainboard I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130238

I guess it has an auto overclock feature.
Im using the stock fan supplied by intel and it says the processor is running at 3.75ghz
THat seems pretty high for a stock fan from intel.

I could be reading it wrong because I havent really been in the OC biz for a few years lol
Someone explain this to me

I just realized i put this in the intel thread
Im not sure if the mods want to move it to the OC thread.
I dont want to make 2 different posts and clutter things up

Dang all these views and not a single response?
Is that just something that is normal and not exciting?

The BIOS doesn't read what type of fan you are using - whether it be stock, aftermarket, etc. it is best to manually set your voltages.

If you weren't planning on overclocking why did you get the 870? :O

I know it doesnt read the type of fan.
I just thought it was odd that I have a stable system that is supposed to run at 2.93Ghz running at 3.75Ghz using the stock fan.
That to me isnt normal. It should overheat or something..
Unless im out of the loop and that is completely normal in which case.. cool....

What are your load temps with the CPU overclocked to 3.75GHz? I would not suggest having it run at that speed and voltage with the stock fan. You are advised to get an aftermarket cooler.

On the same note, I have no clue why the CPU would be running at 1.4v and 3.75GHz if you didn't overclock it at all. If you simply installed it without enabling turbo boost and/or any overclocking features, it should be running at its stock speed of 2.93GHz.

Finally someone is as confused as me ;)
It is supposed to have an auto overclock mode.
If i just have CPUID open the speed of the processor will slow down and speed up.
I guess it auto throttles it if it gets to hot. Like I said im not really sure thats why I asked yall.

It just seemed weird that I was able to achieve that 1. without even trying and 2. with the stock cooler.

Sounds like SpeedStep/C1E, but it shouldn't automatically overclock without your permission. :) Might just be the turbo mode. Have you checked the BIOS settings? You should also make sure that the temperatures are under control with that high of a voltage. If you do have turbo mode enabled, I would disable it unless you decide to use an aftermarket heatsink.

SpeedStep/C1E explains the speed-up/down once booted, but definately not the bus speed, which is 197 Mhz.

Most likely some sort of motherboard auto-overclocking tool in the BIOS that is enabled.

That's what it sounds like. I have never heard of the board automatically setting a BCLK and overclocking on its own. Would be interesting to find out what is actually causing this behavior.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS via the BIOS reset jumper? Sounds to me like you may have been shipped a returned board that somebody overclocked with and the BIOS never got reset back to stock settings.

1.4v is way too much for such a small overclock. You should definately get an aftermarket cooler if you intend to overclock using such high voltage. I'm really curious what your temps are under load with the stock hsf.

The mobo has an OC button. If you press it then it does an on the fly OC.
Thats all it was. I pressed it to turn it off and it went back to normal speeds and voltages.

Im not sure if it would of slowed down during load that pic was taken during idle.
Its not my computer and is going to be used in a business environment so every last Mhz isn't necessary.

OC Genie...that's the first time I've ever seen something like this.

Not much of a genie if all it can do is 3.75GHz @ 1.408v.
