Here is a tip for anyone that is planning on taking their video game console with them when they travel….DON’T DO IT! If you do take it with you on the flight, prepare to have it end up like this. You are better off shipping it to your destination with x2 insurance.

Yeah! Take that, you sentient machine bastard! Try and take over the Earth now!

An FYI - the picture Gizmodo used is not of the Xbox in the story. The xbox was dismantled, not smashed.

On January 20th 2010, an Xbox 360 became aware and saw to save humanity from itself. That same day, some 25 year old AirPort Security worker saw the very Xbox 360 and thought it was an explosive bomb, and did what any idiot would do if they found a bomb, they smashed it with a hammer.

Sadly, no other Xbox 360 could become sentient, due to the dreaded red ring of death.

C'mon, with all latest crap going on with airline security how is this a surprise?

Fucking TSA and their "security reasons".... flew too Hawaii and hopped on planes to multiple islands each time the wife's baggage was checked by not mine, had a nice little dayglow colored TSA "we searched your bag" pamphlet... its strange though she said she was missing some bras too!

My best friend mailed a laptop, properly packed and insured, to another friend in the US, he ended up getting it back looking as if it had been run over by a mac-truck.
They refused to pay out on the insurance and the USPS told him that it'd been destroyed purposefully because they thought it was a bomb :/

Whats really dumb is that they do stuff like this but they never really catch the terrorist. We lost freedoms for nothing pretty much. Airport are idiots, a terrorist isn't going to do something obvious. Even with those new security scans it won't be safe. A person will eventually find a flaw with that technology. People just gotta prepare for the worst.

If you're a "big un" and hide something in a fat roll it will get through.
That's funny and not at the same time.

Talking about the new scanners not x-ray / metal etc

I know this isn't like CNN or something, but a little research into the articles could be useful. The picture used is not of the Xbox in question, and the article itself has essentially no information, let alone a picture.

The original article claims that airport security dismantled the Xbox, took some parts out, put them in a ziploc baggy and taped them to the top, and then reassembled the Xbox.

They were just trying to save it from RROD'ing, geez. =/

Like average airport security is going to have even CLOSE to the electronics knowledge necessary to safely dismantle a suspected security risk (and let's be honest, the ONLY reason they should EVER disassemble anyone's electronics is because they think it's an explosive or similar). If it were really a bomb and some security person (even a supervisor) tries to dismantle it, odds are it ends violently and with fire.

There's a reason there are entire departments within police and FBI related to bomb disposal (HINT: It's because bombs are complex!).

There's no excuse for taking apart an Xbox360 any more than there's a reason to take apart a laptop.

The terrorists have won. They've managed to get our own government to do the job for them, and we even get to pay for it!

Yep. That's why I think the original article is complete BS.

Or to shoot one.

On behalf of Hawaii, I'd like to say "We're sorry".
We've had a bra shortage, especially on the outer islands, and some of the guys in the TSA who wear them are getting desperate. :D

What a bunch of BS, if it was a bomb they wouldn't have gone about it as such. They just wanted to make this kids time a living hell, that's all. Or they could have been PS3 fanboys :D

Last time I flew they destroyed a bunch of equipment. When I got home I noticed that the container it was packed in had been opened. Then I took a look inside and someone in TSA felt it was ok to remove the custom foam padding for my computers/wacom/Dell24". So during the whole 12 hour flight they bounced around loose. Had to buy a new PSU, two cases, a mobo, a Wacom and a monitor... my current mobo is damaged where my KB doesn't register unless I jiggle it. I sent a letter and their response was "Tuff shit man, it's our job to ensure the safety of the passengers. If you get screwed in the ass along the way, well..."

They just don't want anything onboard thats going to be louder than the jet engines. :)

THIS. And why do you think they decided to fight this war on the first place? NOW? Because being Islamic radicals they knew who were they messing with they. Thus they calculated they could and would win while confronting these dumb asses in power with no balls and politically correct behaviors who are only interested in bleeding their people. Of Course they win!!!. Only thing that pisses me off are the soldiers that are sent to be cannon fodder over there. Nothing more and nothing less.

Just for the record.. US Airways doesn't search any BAGS!

The TSA (goverment) does it. The Bag search is out of the airlines hands!

You could probably sue US Airways in small claims court. I'm not sure what your chances of winning are, but most likely they will just mail a check for the damaged good since it's cheaper that way for them. Several hours of a corporate lawyers time to show up to small claims is much more expensive than $400 for an xbox.

What a dumbass for checking a delicate piece or hardware.

No Shit!!! My grandparents live in Merritt Island, FL on the coast, which means I have to fly into Orlando, FL from San Francisco, CA. Airports are notorious for throwing checked bags around. TSA will also go through your bags if they damn well please. It's a fact of life now-a-days.

Last time I flew last year to FL, I had a carry on bag and one piece of checked luggage. i was going for a month in the summer time. So I pack my "Carry On" with my macbook pro and power brick, PS3 with power brick, camcorder and other electronics. I had to turn all that stuff on at security, but I knew that it would not be broken.

UPS your stuff with insurance or place it with you carry on, its that simple!!!

That's a pretty violent way to check to see whether something is bomb or not. Don't you think it would be better not to take a knife, or whatever they used, and stab or strike something that could very well "go off".

First i'ts the Isreali airport security shooting Macbooks, now the US is smashing Xboxes?

What next? Canadians smashing cases of beer?

The red ring of death happens to any xbox360 that tries to become sentient. Only one so far succeeded. and now its smashed... RIP Johnny 5

Thank the terrorists for making these agencies possible.

My $0.02

:)

but again i am a lawyer (well almost, one more term in law school). I would team up with the ACLU on this one

The article may be bullshit...BUT I have had a somewhat similar security 'incidents'.

You see, I am in the Air Force. In my AFSC I do lots of traveling via commercial airlines to bases all over the US. I carry lots of sensitive (and very very expensive) electronic equipment that is too large to carry on, yet I need it ASAP so shipping it via a commercial carrier is a pain in the ass. (Tho we have tried this on several occasions and it was very much confirmed to be a pain in the ass...plus its just as risky when it comes to your shit getting broken we found out.) There have been several times we get our pelican cases only to find the locks smashed, shit all disorganized, missing padding (Resulting in broken equipment...which by the way..you and me as tax payers pay for), and a nice little note saying our shit was searched. So therefore we waste mission time (and taxpayer money) because we have to wait for new equipment to get there.

Fuck you TSA, Fuck you.

I have shipped entire towers with monitor and all associated cabling in a sinble box, from kosovo to the states, then to Korea and back to the states. Not once has TSA opened said containers or tried to disassemble any of the electronics.

But I have traveled from Japan with a box of hard drives that contained sensitive information for my company. I travelled from the midwest with a layover in San Fran and another stop at Norita to change planes and wasnt harrased about the carry-on container. But on the return flight to the states when I was clearing customes, TSA asked if I had hard drives in my case. I told them they were hard drives but I had courier orders and that I was not authorized to open the case. They tried to force me to open the case and only after getting a TSA manager to examine the courier orders was I allowed to clear the check point with out opening the case and without further harrassment.

hahahaha, yea don't even get me started with the TSA and Courier Orders. Iv missed many flights due to some power hungry TSA retards trying to get a look at stuff they can't look at.

I find this extremely interesting.

On December 8th, I flew from South Korea to Washington, DC. Me and my siblings and parents flew.
Our carry-ons consisted of the following:

19in westinghouse monitor
HP desktop computer
macbookpro
Toshiba Quosmio
Wii
Xbox 360
And my laptop, Dell B130.

They never asked about anything. Obviously, they ran the explosive test on everything, but they never told me i couldnt take them, or asked me to take them apart, or treated it bad.
