A friend of mine came over and saw how I had my HTPC set up and he was blown away with it and wants me to build him one. My HTPC was a on a strict budget and works fine with me but my friend wants his to be a little more like a normal desktop that he can watch blurays on and record and watch TV. I’m thinking about getting this setup for him:

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 905e 2.5GHz Socket AM3 65W Quad-Core Processor
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5750
Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
LG Black BD-Combo SATA Model CH08LS10 LightScribe Support
SILVERSTONE Black GD01B-R ATX Media Center / HTPC Case
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit 1-Pack
Logitech Harmony 550 Infrared Universal Advanced Remote Control
SiliconDust HDHomeRun Network-based Dual Digital HDTV Tuner Ethernet Interface (to start him off with but eventually get a cable card tuner)

He wants to spend about $1500 on it.

I still need for him to get TMT3 and the MCE remote receiver but do you guys think that I will have any problems with this setup? I’m worried about the motherboard or any issues I would have with compatibility with the other parts. I’m looking for feedback.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a keyboard and mouse combo that has the best range?

Thanks

Is he going to game on this?

If not, thats a bit of overkill.

I have to agree, the CPU and vid card is way overkill, I got my Dad a Powercolor 4670, it has 1 HDMI output (with sound) and a very quiet fan, and with an Opteron 275 (dual core 2.2Ghz) it can play bluray/1080p content no problems...

Also, I got myself a 4870 a while back for my HTPC (because it was cheap) and now I kind of regret it, I have to install ATT to slow the fan down and I never use it for gaming...

Oh I forgot to mention that yes, he will be doing a little gaming on it and he wants the 5xxx series card for the Dolby True HD/DTS-HD

Ahh, ok then.

Do you know what res he'll have to run his TV at? Because you can size the video card accordingly for a much better experience gaming wise by running the TV at native res.

Also, have you priced out an i5 or i7 rig for price comparison's sake?

Im pretty sure his TV does 1920x1080 so that would be the maximum he will be playing at. I haven’t really looked at i5 or i7 rig though might be an option if we can keep it around the same price.

No need for Win 7 Ultimate - get Home Premium.

You might want to go with a 5770 or 5850 if he'll be gaming at that res - use the money you saved above :D

Too bad the i5 750 is no longer on sale @ microcenter, it might have been a good fit considering you don't need the GPU on i3. Not sure how the prices will compare with your config but AMD will probably be less.

Thanks for the input, that sounds like a good idea. Do you or anybody have a suggestion on the brand of video card I should go after?

Thanks guys!
