Google Nexus One Avail. Jan 5

Who does? Google? Sholes, Hero, Dream, Magic etc. etc. are all running Android, and that's the bit that Google provides; we aren't talking hardware, we're talking software. Android is on multiple phones spanning Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint, with AT&T joining soon enough. This isn't the googlephone, it's a googlephone.

Whoever thinks they're going to take a significant loss on a product they don't even build has their head in the clouds.

sorry...did I miss something? Is this not the google branded phone that they contracted HTC to make for them, but certainly are owning product rights and earning direct revenue off of...or is that a future phone that I'm getting confused about? Because I don't know why Google would spend the money on a google branded phone to compete with non google branded phones running the same android OS, unless they wanted to make a profit on the phone itself...

My reply was directed at you because you made it appear as though the Passion is the only Android phone out there -- there are a bunch of other 'google experience' phones out there. Unless you know something that the rest of the world doesn't, the arrangement isn't any different with the Passion as it was for the Dream, Magic, Hero etc.

Feel free to post something proving the opposite though, I'd love to know.

I'm not sure I understand, and can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not? I mean, the Droid is owned by Motorola, They pay a royalty to Google for each device sold for the Android OS. Unless I'm mistaken, the Nexus One is owned by Google. They contracted HTC to make it (much as Apple pays Foxconn to make the iPhone), but each Nexus phone sold is Google revenue, hardware and software. Surely you see the difference from just "any other googlephone"? This is in fact THE Googlephone.

No sarcasm.

What I'm saying is that this isn't the googlephone as far as I can see, this appears to be the same as the other android handsets. Nothing so far has made me think otherwise, unless you count the baseless speculation that has been running rampant. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe this really is the googlephone (and we'll see for sure in a few days), it's just that so far it's the exact same as all the other android based phones albiet with higher hardware and software specs.

I'm a little curious though to see if they do have something else up their sleeve when they announce it...

I'm sorry, for $529, this is a flop. I know their BOM is not nearly that, and they are just doing the same thing Apple is doing, earning say 50%+ on the hardware. That's not the way to go, and considering that it's functionally tied to Tmobile anyways, the argument that an unlocked 3GS goes for more is really moot. That being said Apple is such an offender towards their customers that I'd jump ship to Nexus One if it weren't for the fact that I browse on my iphone too much to deal with slow EDGE speeds. If it turns out not to be such a big deal maybe I'll make the switch.

Holy crap that snapdragon is fast...

all i can say is...wow

The screen is killer, and should be standard on every high end phone since 2009 (Apple you scum-bags why did you not add OLED to 3G/3GS? Oh yeah so you can introduced Iphone 3GSOLED in January 2009).

However the browser looks slow. Not in terms of rendering in time but in terms of scrolling smoothness. I expect that will improve as there's no reason a 1GHZ Cortex A8 can't handle it.

The last complaint is Google's insistence on Java. I've heard it can be quite the abstraction layer, and that the hardware isn't fully accessible without use C++ compiled runtimes. This is supposedly a bigger deal for games. Does Zune use android or its own OS? Becaus that has no issues. I'm assuming some Microsoft derivation at this point...off topic.

And why no official multitouch apps?

Where have you read reports about the battery life?

Look @ beginning of video and @ the end of video. I have 2 recharge my iPhone every day. Sometimes twice a day. I don't let my battery go under 30%. So i don't expect nexus1 battery to last any longer then my iPhone one.

Well unfortunately the new smartphone standard is really "last through one work day of use."

My one big gripe with this phone is that there is a small speaker on the BACK top right, if you are looking at it. The problem with the speaker being there is, if you place the phone down on ANY surface, but esp. a soft surface, like cloth it mutes the ringer. Same for carrying it in your pocket...I miss a ton of calls.

thankfully it is. iphone users are so newby, it makes me sick. their charger is like their tail

i wish i could somehow forbid iphone users from switching to android

but back on topic, this phone has a lot of potential.

battery life is likely going to be shit (but possibly good as in they have solid power management) ill probably stick with my bb for now

Same with my G1. Oh well, I'm not that important.

My work phone (Pro-700) causes fits of seizure, when I am needed.

$529 is the rumored price now? I am the first person to always pay full price for a phone and not the subsidized price but this phone is nowhere near a $529 phone. I would honestly pay unlocked 300-375 for this phone MAX

The price is competitve for the hardware, the nokia N900 is about the same price and it's hardware isn't as good. An unlocked iphone 3GS goes for about $500-600 on ebay. So the price seems competitive...

I wish it was sub $400 too. I'd probably pay $529 for the HD2 with android, with it's epic screen and specs. But it's hard to justify a $529 price tag for this phone, even if the price is competitive.

If you take a look at unsubbed phones in the same arena, this is priced accordingly.

i'm hoping google has something up their sleeve tomorrow, this isn't the game changer i was hoping it would be

The subsidized price is not that much more according to my maths, coming to roughly $130 more for two years with the subsidized pricing.

Wait, what am I missing here? Looking at the leaked specs of the Nexus One, they look very similar to those of the HD2. What does the HD2 have that the Nexus One is lacking?

Yeah, I thought the same thing -- no big deal really, I think we've all made our judgment about this handset. Barring them saying anything groundbreaking this morning, we know the performance of the handset, we know the updates to the operating system (by virtue of the dozens of videos out there), we know the specs of the handset, etc.

I actually met a guy who was using the Nexus One yesterday while checking out at Trader Joes (North Beach SF, if anyone is in the area) -- normally I don't wander up to strangers and ask them what they're using, but I couldn't resist having a look. I assume he was a Google employee, but I didn't ask. He was very friendly, showed me the phone, let me play around with it. It is definitely very small and the screen looks fabulous. My G1 must have shed a tear when it saw how fast this thing was...

I'm pretty sure it won't be released until later this month.Coming to Verizon spring 2010

I'm 1 year into my G1's contract with T-Mobile, and tried to upgrade to the N1. It said I wasn't eligible :(

I was told by a customer rep about two weeks ago that if you "ask nicely" that they will often let you go ahead.

"The Nexus One Phone with Verizon Wireless service. Coming soon in the United States"

I have had a G1 for a year and a half and nice didn't mean shit.

That might be the case with the Nexus One since it's brand new -- when I spoke with the customer rep I had to tell her that there was "going to be a new Android phone on your service" that she didn't know about. I think it's a YMMV situation unfortunately.

Well, I ordered mine at work a little while ago and just waiting for it to be shipped out... :) So the 32g 3gs turns into my touch until I sell and get a touch...
