Google Nexus One Avail. Jan 5

1. None of this is True. There is no release date, there is no plans on discounts and there is no plan to push VOIP only on these phones AT ALL. The only real information is the hardware itself.
2. This phone is leaps and bounds ahead of the iPhone in everything except its application market development which is coming along nicely.
3. No ATT 3G (Bummer I know) but the EDGE network works fine and the phone is fast enough to function as fast as it possible can on that network. On Wifi there isn't a phone that comes close to speed in terms of loading pages and downloading files

Believe what you want, but the OP information is totally bogus. If you think Google helped to start Android to get rid of US Carriers and plans on pushing just VOIP services you are in la la land.

Well I'm sure it'll be subsidized by T-Mobile in some fashion -- there's no way they could sell these phones in any real volume otherwise. Considering it's the only band that the phones will have 3G on, it's a shoe-in (why on earth would you hobble the phone on EDGE?). The real question is "when will the phone become available." The 5th of January might not be right, but I'm sure it will be sooner than we think.

Considering the current hardware, it is probably best guess that they will try and work with T-Mobile....yup yup

Only reason to hobble the phone on 3G is if it didn't cost anything and your grandfathered AT&T rates are 50% cheaper than anything available today from anywhere :) HEHE

are you guys saying that it will on tmobile and not sold as an unlocked version from google?

I'm hoping within the first couple days of the new year google will have an announcement, that countdown timer better be more than just a new year timer.;)

Both. Unlocked as the Android Dev Phone 3, and T-Mobile on a contract IMO.

Yeah, but to be honest the only 3G band it works on is T-Mobile to begin with, so unless you don't want 3G, it's not that useful unlocked...

Er, you can buy it unlocked and still use it on T-Mobile...

No I know that, I'm just saying the entire point behind getting an unlocked phone is the ability to use it with any service provider you would like. Given that it's limited to T-Mobile 3G frequencies, I'm just saying there is fairly little point running it on anything else, therefore limiting its appeal as an unlocked phone.

i personally dont care if it has 3g or not, it will still get data on att and tmobile. plus since its unlocked you can use it overseas. look how many people have the iphone on tmobile and none of them get 3g.

Ah ok, ya that's true. That new carrier in Canada, Wind, uses the same 3G bands as T-Mobile so the unlocked version could be useful for them :)

Well that's definitely up to you -- I don't see a point hobbling a phone like this on a slow connection. Putting the iPhone on tmobile at least nets you significantly cheaper rates than ATT, so I could see a point there.

EDIT: also, you can still use a phone on TMobile's service overseas, I'm not sure what you're trying to say there.

hah, good point, someone in the tech world is finally throwing a bone to the canadians...I feel like I'm only ever hearing about them getting short-changed!

Not having 3G hurts...trust me. The phone is blazing faster...faster than anything I have ever used and not having 3G gets annoying.

That being said, you learn to live with it most of the time. I download/install new apps when I am on a WiFi connection and syncing with emails is fine over EDGE. That being said a good EDGE connection will get you from A to B so long as its just finding a movie time or the definition of a word. Any heavy internet usage can get annoyingly slow...especially on AT&T

I think the biggest reason I hate not having 3G is for Maps and Navigation.

Can't complain really though...for the reasons I stated above :) I also happen to be one of the people who loves Android more than they hate AT&T (For now, thank you grandfather rates)

Tough call for me, I want the HD2 with the 2.1 rom being shown for T-mo, but the Nexus looks intriguing as well. Either way I am stuck on ATT unless T-Mobile gives a better corporate discount and has a cheap tethering plan. Going without 3g... Brutal...

the HD2 isn't androidable yet is it?

$180 for that phone with contract sounds excellent in my opinion (yeah it isn't a "gamechanger" like some pie-in-the-sky people were clinging on to), but the thing I don't really understand (and I don't think this is confirmed either) is the requirement for that one plan. Why would they force people with existing plans to switch to that new plan? My current plan has 1000 minutes with my father as an addition (since he doesn't use any minutes anyway but wanted a phone for emergencies) and unlimited data/messaging. Why would they force me to switch to a smaller/cheaper plan?

I'm surprised people are balking at $530, considering that Nokia and other unlocked phones go for similar amounts when unsubsidized...are people really bothered that Google didn't set up a charity and subsidize the phones for free or something!? I think people were just being unrealistic..

well i think everyone expected this to be google's aggressive grab at the market. The way this is set up, it will be just another phone in a long like of pda's. And for about the same price as the droid with less options, I'm not sure I understand the draw to an inferior carrier.

what a let down, I'd pay $400 for it, but not $500+. I made sure I sold my htc hero unlocked before this phone came out, and managed to get $440 for it, this phone at $530 really screwed up my overall plan though. I think I'll wait and see what comes out of CES next month.

Other than the lack of physical keyboard, I don't see anthing "less" than the droid here. From Snapdragon to available RAM to the better screen to the formfactor etc... Check out Gizmodo's hands-on if you need reference -- it's clearly superior to the droid from a technical standpoint.

I can understand the complaint about the carrier if you need verizon's coverage (I've been with T-mobile for eons now and had no coverage problems, but then again I don't go hiking in the hinterlands for 3G either). Then again you do pay significantly more for Verizon than you do T-mobile.

The Nexus One first sounded like a phone worth getting, now it's just a phone worth not getting.

I've had it for two weeks...Its worth getting. Replaced my Mytouch, which replaced my Iphone.

well other than the guess that it had a faster processor, nothing concrete at all suggesting it had any specs that I could see above and beyond the droid. Yes, the screen "seemed" better, and it "seemed" faster..but that's all subjective. Interested to see what the final specs are, but like you pointed out, the only thing we know for sure is that it's missing a keyboard. And for what I use it for, I can get a Verizon plan for $10 less than the T-mobile plan...so i wouldn't pay significantly more. Being forced to pay one price is going to alienate a lot of potential customers. And while your experience will vary, I don't think anyone can realistically compare the coverage and network of VZW to T-Mo...it's not even a contest.

I have only used it on TMO and so far so good....and yes the Mytouch wasnt anything so great, but this is a great phone....very fast, good looking.

having used a droid since launch (and still loving the hell out of this phone) i would looooooooove having that phone over the droid. RAM is pretty much the one area i wish this phone had more of, and flat-out doubling it sounds like heaven regardless of the CPU.

but yeah, i'm a vzw fanboy as far as the coverage and service goes, so i'm not going anywhere. still happy with this phone!

I'd sign another 2 year @ $200. Too bad my contract isn't up untill September. :(

OK well if you're going to assume that T-Mobile is locking you into that single contract, why are you not going to assume the other reports (including photos and screenshots of spec sheets) of the Snapdragon processor, twice the RAM, superior screen, etc?

Anyway, obviously this is going nowhere, so you can have a look at the specs sheet on January 5th. Enjoy the Droid, it's a great phone.

Haha at people claiming the phone is nothing special because it didn't coincide with absolutely baseless rumors from no one who knew anything.

This is exactly what you should have expected and nothing more. $530 is a very reasonable price for this phone unlocked, especially considering the specs.

+1 -- it's like people also forgot how much phones like the iPhone cost without a plan. How people think the arguably most powerful smartphone on the market is going to cost less than that is beyond me...or that google would somehow (out of the goodness of their hearts, presumably) subsidize it out of their own pocket.

only if they want to break into an already saturated market with a third tier provider...

Who does? Google? Sholes, Hero, Dream, Magic etc. etc. are all running Android, and that's the bit that Google provides; we aren't talking hardware, we're talking software. Android is on multiple phones spanning Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint, with AT&T joining soon enough. This isn't the googlephone, it's a googlephone.

Whoever thinks they're going to take a significant loss on a product they don't even build has their head in the clouds.

The price doesn't bother me, it's the fact that they are only allowing 1 plan.

I find that strange too, I would have to imagine that T-Mobile would "allow" someone to pick a plan beyond that. Perhaps they require that plan as a minimum, but I don't get how they would tell someone with a more expensive plan "no no, we don't want your money, change to this." In fact that would be the deciding factor for me to go unlocked vs locked -- whether they really would force my two line 1000 minute with unlimited data+messaging to that plan.
