iSlate?

If it is like any new Apple product other than the Apple TV I am sure that it will be hugely successful for them and sell like hot cakes. I personally think that this will do quite well if it is anything like any of the speculation has been I am sure that this will be the E-Reader, netbook like device that will change how many of the companies in the game think. Much like how the unibody MBP's made laptop manufacturers rethink the design of their products.

Personally, i would love a in between device. I loved my HP TC1100 when i had it and it was an awesome surf pad/note taking device. It would fill in alot of gray area i have right now were my iphone is ill equipped to do something, and there is no point in pulling out my MBP.

My only hope is that its a "full" computer and and runs "full" osx.

I'm not convinced that the e-reader portion is going to be that hot. As someone who has owned both a Kindle 2 and a Kindle DX, there's no way any backlit screen is going to compete with e-ink. I hated e-books because reading on a computer sucks. I love my Kindle. Apple is also going to have a lot of work to sway publishers to release titles in whatever proprietary (naturally) ebook format they're going to use. Might work, might be another lackluster gimmick like iTunes LPs (I bought a couple. They're neat for about an hour).

As far as the software, I too hope it's a full tablet and not just a big-ass iPhone.

I'm in the 'wait and see' boat, but I definitely want the "iSlate" to be good.
Hopefully it will essentially be a 13" MBP in the tablet form factor. Personally, I'd like to see another Apple game changer, and I want this device to be a note taking device and replace my MBP.
Of course I'm being optimistic, but that would be incredible.

what apple really needs to do is get into the netbook segment. I have a monster desktop rig and ultra portable netbook...there's really no need for anything in between. I'd love a MBP but I can't think of a single use for it that I can't already do with my current setup.

Yeah but you won't be able to read anything other than Steve Jobs big diary. I'm not paying for that.

I second Rombus. I hope the device has a full install of OS X, with a full screen layer like the iPhone ontop of it, so you can switch between the two. I also hope they add the option to have a UTMS or CDMA card for wireless internet service, instead of just Wifi.

Sounds overpriced and expensive...just like the air.

Its sad as I actually would like a slim tablet for internet browsing/email/music/some light picture stuff, etc. But I have a feeling this sucker is going to be priced outrageously.

I wouldn't be surprised if the pricing was between 500 and 1000 dollars. Probably about the same as the iPhone, or between the iPhone and the macbook

Which is still damn expensive for a limited tablet when you can get a full macbook for ~$800

Apple is going to do for Tablets / Tablet PCs in their first release what Microsoft and numerous OEMs couldn't do for the platform in the last 8+ years. I'm no Apple fan, but if they do what they did for the cell phone and portable music player markets, this should be good.

My fear is that it will be gimped in some way even for the high price tag...like the air.

Now there are rumors that it's only going to be an ebook reader. iGuide is a lame name, and I don't see how Apple is going to make a game-changing, or even competitive, ebook reader when the Kindle smokes everything else out there, if only for the delivery service.

Not interested in tablets at the moment. Unless Apple pulls off something OMGREVOLUTIONARY, I don't see myself being an iSlate owner. Still curious to see what Ive comes up with in the design department, of course.

iGuide is a lame name, indeed. But I think Apple's too smart to do just an eBook reader. I honestly suspect this will be a game-changer. I smell a GPS-enabled Tablet with all the features of a slimmed down OS and an interface everyone can eat up. And an eBook reader as simply one of the many features included.

That's not game changing.

I think they can be game changing in other ways.

I mean, technically the iPhone runs OSX, all i want is the ability to have the same OSX experience i have on my laptop. I would totally go for some Front row or iPhone style overlay to the OS, as long as i can get to a full OSX instance without much trouble.

Keep in mind, they cut 10.6 down ALOT in terms of install size, and that is very telling to me.

I'm hoping its more TabletPC + Ebook Reader + Media Player, rather than more iPhone + Ebook Reader + Media Player.

If you're saying you think Snow Leopard went on a diet for future application onto mobile devices, you're only partially right. Keep in mind that much of Snow Leopard's lighter footprint comes from a minimal install and a switch to base 10 file size counting. Things that Snow Leopard's install leaves out, such as printer drivers, wouldn't find their way onto a mobile device anyway. Space gains from program rewrites, such as Finder, also wouldn't really apply to a mobile device; iPhone isn't running Finder, for example.

If this tablet is real, I think its innovation will come in how you interact with it, not what you're interacting with.

I think this is the worst name ever, it better not be this when it's out.

If they try to make this just a jumbo iPhone like some of the rumors have it, it will fail miserably IMO.

It really depends on your view of "Mobile" device. I would much rather see a Tablet Macbook rather than a Big Screen iPhone, and to me "Mobile" tends to me more iPhoneish. If its a Tablet MB then the reductions in 10.6 make more sense, assuming sold state drives/etc. I would not be suprised though if Apple blured the line so to speak and we see a "Tablet Macbook Big Screen iPhone" Hybrid.

But i bet your right, The innovation will come with the UI. I would love to see Multithough with optional pen based input.

The iSlate will be OMGWTFAMAZING, but will have a front facing camera that will slowly seep off your soul. Steve Jobs will use his soul-buckake to gain eternal life.

While true, the iPhone/iPod touch OS is just a stripped down OS X. The changes in Snow Leopard would be beneficial on the iphone, architecturally speaking.

I know and understand that OS X is running on the iPhone, it's just that most of Snow Leopard's changes dealt with the elements that are present on the desktop version and not in the iPhone version.

A tablet Macbook with a full install of OS X and pen based input is nothing new. In fact, the Modbook has been around for years, but has never caught on or done much to change things. For one, it's expensive. Though more significantly it's because it uses the same failed approach that other tablet makers have used - design a specialized mobile device, then slap a general purpose desktop operating system on it.

I normally wouldn't buy an apple computer, but if they can create these with high/fine sensitivity levels (and the ability to use a stylus on it) I'd buy one in a heart beat.

it's like a wacom cintiq that does more

I know quite a few people are excited for this device, if it is in fact real. I personally have zero interest in it though. I have a 13" MBP which I like. Although I don't have an iPhone (I may get one in the not too distant future), I do have a PMP with internet capabilities. I just don't see why I'd need a third device that will probably have the same functionalities as my laptop and/or cell phone/pmp. If I need to ditch the laptop bag and just have something super small, I can use something like the iPhone, Zune HD, etc. If I need something larger, more power, additional software (whatever the case may be), I can use the laptop. I just personally don't see any need for a between device.

But that's just me.
