System is hanging...could this be a problem with my PSU?

Hey, this has been going on for awhile...my system will randomly hang for around 5-10 seconds. As I said, this is completely random and does not seem to have any correlation with how hot my system is nor its load. Im pretty sure this problem is caused by the connection between my HDD's and my motherboard dropping for a little while. Also, sometimes on boot up my system won't be able to find all my sata devices. To solve all this all I have to do is restart my computer and its usually fixed. Could this be caused by stressing my PSU too much?

I'm running a corsair 520HX with a 9800 GX2 thats overclocked, 4 gb of ram (2x2), a Q6600 both overclocked and overvolted as well as my NB. Additionally I have 3 HDD's, a dvd player and about 8 or so usb connections with a bunch of fans as well.

I wouldn't automatically rule out the PSU being the source - but on some boots your board isn't finding all of your SATA devices? sounds like the Motherboard or more specifically, the SATA Port(s) or controller may be acting up

What brand/model HDs and what mobo is it? I doubt it's the power supply too. I'd go back to stock speed and voltage for testing, check the SATA cables, check SMART info.

i hope your drives aren't dying.. the last time this happened to me.. my drives died!

i also have a similar problem of my board not finding my boot drive.. frustrating at times.. but a reset usually fixes it.

vdroop? I'd say its the Q6600 not getting enough power or a weak link somewhere in the circuitry. Run your Q6600 at stock (volts + speed) and see if your system hangs.

Also, turn off EIST and C1E/Speedstep functions off in your motherboard.

But yet again, I could be wrong too, its a different case with even the most similar systems yet, take out the PSU and chuck in another one.

Well I can rule out the motherboard as I have swapped another one in to the same problem. My HDD's are 2 seagate barracuda's and one WD caviar. I haven't really looked at my sata cables, so maybe thats at fault, nor have I really explored the voltage of my Q6600..but I seem to remember that even underclocked at stock speed the same problem occurs. I dont ahve any extra sata cables on me, but I will look into the volts on Q6600. Thanks for all the suggestions.

What model Seagates and WD? Seagate has been having problems with their drives lately. During boot does the system not see all the drives or the same one is missing all the time?

My friend is having the same problem and we have no idea how to address it. He's tried disabling various drivers to no avail. He'll probably try to reformat soon. I don't think he has the technical know-how to check all the hardware, and I can't do anything to help because he lives a thousand miles away.

Disconnect the hard drives, and test each of them individually with a set of hard drive tests on them.
