A new study claims that women are put off by geeks and that is why they avoid computer science. On a related note, it is almost 2010 and researchers still perpetuate the “revenge of the nerds” stereotype even though most of us have never fit that mold. :( Thanks to Railhaus for the linkage.

Women don't feel they would fit in and so steer clear of computer-science majors and jobs, the researchers say. Such avoidance could help to explain why just 22 percent of computer-science graduates are women, a percentage that has been steadily decreasing, according to 2008 data from the National Science Foundation.

This just women, studies show that women apparently judge men based on appearance.

As if we needed a study to tell us that guys that are openly geeky have the same chance of being laid by a woman as guys that are openly gay.

The study didn't say they were afraid of geeky looking guys. It said they didn't like 'geeky environments'.

They put them in a room with coke cans, and boxes sitting around. Then a separate group they put in a room with dictionaries, artwork, and nature posters. Then they asked which environment they would rather work in. The ones that wanted to work around dictionaries were deemed to not like the 'masculine' workplace with coke cans.

I guess I need to watch more television and bone up on how I'm supposed to be behaving. I've been in IT for over a decade and rarely encounter these stereotypes to any significant degree. Hell, I work in IT in a video game studio, which should invite it like no place else, and yet it's pretty much like most other work environments, except for the lack of fancy duds and backstabbing. Remind me again why these are bad things?

on a related note, the percentages of males in home economics classes continues to be high for some reason, even though most of them never follow through with the studies in their careers.

girls seem to have sexual tension around me when i'm in the computer classes

always has seemed that way lol

if the girls were really smart, they'd realize that most of us in these classes offer a lot of potential for financial security

This just in Men feel out of place with the over-girly, gossipy, shallow attitudes of courses like: Nursing, Pharmacy, midwifty,

Goes both ways girls

Since no one else has said it yet.

If they stayed in the kitchen, studies like this wouldn't be useless.

Disclaimer: If you get offended by the above, too bad. Learn to take a joke. ;)

22%? that seems pretty high from my experience
I would have guessed 10%, tops

This is a good thing guys, women should be in the kitchen cooking us bagel bites, hot pocket or any other food that goes well with long nights at the computer:p

Cheryan added one way to change the lopsided field would be, "broadening the image of computer science to make it so that other people feel a connection to the field."

Never going to happen. The top schools have students waiting ten deep to get into the program and the professors have zero interest in changing their own or students perspective.

Right cause its always the mens fault?

In other news women are equal to men and men are equal to women. Women can run just as fast and lift just as much as men not to mention can drive just as well on the roads.

Men can shop just as well and also spent the same amount of time gossiping just like women.

My god isn't America perfect?

I lift weights and love all things manly. I'm just a huge closet gamer/nerd as well... chicks love me?

Then shouldn't there be a disproportionate number of gay men in IT? It's like a fat guy let loose in a cake factory.

These studies are getting lame. This must be the 5th or 6th one that says the same god damn thing. It's their decision not to go into IT or science. Where do I bitch that there are not enough male elementary/middle/high school teachers so that boys in American schools have an active male role model in schools? I think the NSF needs to better spend their money.

Because the male equivalents of feminazis are taken about as seriously as the tinfoil hat alien mind control conspiracy theorists.

See, I don't see this as a bad thing.
Keep women out of our impacted Engineering schools and classes, so that I and more qualified individuals can actually get in.
Being qualified for a field means fuck-all if you are a whiney bitch who doesn't "like the environment," and therefore resents/sucks at her job.

Interesting.

I have seen more girls in CS than EE or ME for that matter.

You post too fast.

I'm in ME, and I have been for the past 6 years...and believe me, there's hardly a girl in sight (at least worth looking for :-D).

That might just be where you live. My senior year of high school I think 5 out of 6 teachers were male that I had.

The only thing wrong with this argument is that school is not a job, Perhaps some of the whininess comes from having to pay for a poor environment and resentment towards professors whose only interest is publishing or a pet research project.

The only thing wrong with that argument is that it also applies to working environments too. Under-qualified women are routinely hired to diversify science specific companies. Let the group as a whole pull up the underachiever while your diversity numbers look pretty.

Did they really need a study to tell them this? Who honestly cares, anyway?

And what is with all these obvious-answer studies?

While I do certainly support more women in Computer Science I'm not sure what the purpose of these studies are. Women are in certain historically male-dominated fields in record numbers and are even overtaking men. I think it's been shown that women can succeed in whatever field they want, I personally don't see them as "victims."

I'm glad researchers automatically assume that everyone makes career goals on stereotypes though. I would think intelligent people of both sexes would give little heed to stupid archetypes.

This study is BS. Girls are constantly pressured to be attractive and liked when growing up by everyone and they think being "geeky" pretty much destroys that. Also male bosses and co-workers are often super critical and often don't take "geek chicks" seriously in the workplace. Many guys may even feel jealous of a female IT worker or even fear them as they may get promoted above them based on their looks/connection to a boss/whatever. Sexism is still very alive in the real western world even though we pretend thats not true

There's tons of factors that come into play when we study the lack of women in IT. Coke cans and boxes lying around groups of dudes who are more likely to be percieved as nerds is just a small piece of the puzzle

So according to this study women are a bunch of sexist pigs who only care about appearance? Got it. Next time I see a feminist I'm just going to staple this to her forehead.

Women HAVE to care about appearance. They aren't as good as men at anything else. Beauty is the one thing they do better than us.

If I was a chick, I'd put all my effort into looking good, instead of wasting time with things like science and maths.

Ugh no I wouldn't discredit women to anything close to that. Women are, depending on their concentration, have the same ability to perform things as men. Just because a woman doesn't know how to do an integral only means that can thread a catheter down your penis without blushing.

I just think these aisine policy that promote diversify do more harm by making people think the minority who do end up in a position and are qualified are thought of less because of the stereotype that minorities are only hired because of their skin. There are still hiring's like that, but because of the policy it hurt people who are a minority and who are qualified.
