I saw that the Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modem is on sale at Best Buy for 64.99 It is on page 28 of the add for Dec 6th to 12th

When I went into the store the price tag and the price it rung up as was $99. I simple showed them the weekly add where it says $64 and they changed it for me. I didn't bother to print the add, I knew they would have a ton of the weekly add at the store.

I know the add says "with new internet service", but they did not seem to even care about that part.

I wasn't aware Docsis 3.0 was available residentially. We just had our service line upgraded at work to the 50/10 Docsis 3.0 speeds and I'm loving it. We had gone from a T1 to 16/2 comcast service about 4 montho ago and that was amazing already.

Depends on your area/provider if you can get DOC 3.0 or not. Have to call them and find out if/when you can get it.

Probably want to add a YMMV since some might care about the "with new internet service." That being said, I know where I'm going to stop on my way home.

Thanks for posting.

Can't seem to edit the Thread Tittle, but yeah I hope it doesn't turn into a YMMV

Also, not Really any change from old modem to new one

new test:

Second test looks slower but that might be due to time of day and/or other local node bandwidth issues

How will I know when DOCSIS 3.0 has launched in my area?

If you have COMCAST service, can you use your own modem?

I thought you had to use theirs.

It said it is available in my area and my speeds will be upgraded automatically, now is that only true if I have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem?

I'm pretty sure my current modem is only certified for DOCSIS 1, lol maybe I should just go out and get this and see if I get a difference now that it says it’s in my area

My results

RCA DCM425 DOCSIS 2.0 Modem

SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 Modem

Looks like a waste to me but its nice looking lol

no go at my local bb without singing up (there plan was twice the price and half the data rate compared to what comcast offers direct)
bestbuy in Florida are pretty bad since there the only game in town. (definitely need a Fry's or microcenter down here)

I'm currently using this modem and it is fantastic, I didn't get any noticeable speedup, but because I am on a DOCSIS 3.0 system I get the benefit of multiple down streams (4 to be exact), and so if any channel happens to be causing problems the packets can come down the other channels without issue. I was having intermittent line issues and this solved them in one fell swoop (I tried other docsis 2.0 modems and none of them solved it). Good luck!

Here is mine btw, bay area Blast! service level.

If you don't mind, how much are you paying for 25Mbit down?

afaik time warner has no plans for docsis 3.0 and that sucks. They are too busy trying to be like comcast and come up with dl caps and charge per gb.

I have the Premier which is $60 a month with 20 down and 2 up. I regularly get 25 to 28 down but only 1.8 up.

They have a Premier Plus for $80 that gives on paper 28 down 2 up, which I didn't think was worth the cost increase compared to the performance I get with my current plan.

They also have a Ultimate which uses the new DOCSIS 3.0 tech that is 50 down 5 up, I understand that price is either $90 or $100

I just tested mine in the AM and got

Lately in the late evening the BW just drops like rock and I cant't get more than 1Mbit. I called Cox to complain, but their 1st level techs are idiots and basically tell me to deal with it.

Yeah I upgraded my modem as well and noticed no gain in speed but definately saw an improvement in mutliple streams. I think it is a bit ahead of the curve right now....If you are running DOCSIS 2.0 you should be fine.

Part of the reason I changed up was that I noticed my Linksys had alot of logged errors with the connection and as a result pages would not show up without first refreshing etc. I hoped to solve that issue with updated hardware but alas it was not the case.

Has anyone else successfullly managed to get the modem for the sale price without the new service? I'm just curious, since none of my local BB even stock it.

So if you have a DOCSIS 2.0 modem and Comcast it's not worth the upgrade? Is that the consensus?

^^ I would guess. Other than a few random outages in the summer, I haven't had any problems with my current modem, which I've had since 2005. I think I'll probably wait to hear more results before moving on this.

Well it’s definitely not worth the upgrade if comcast doesn't even support DOCSIS 3.0 in your area. You'll have to enter your zip code into that comcast service area link in this thread to find out. And if they do and you’re on a DOCSIS 2.0 modem I'd say unless you want a new toy or your having problems with your current modem or if you rent your current modem it's really up to you. I'd bet you're not going to see improvement.

I picked it up because I'm a sucker for new toys and wanted to try it out and it actually matches my netgear WNR3500 Nicely but as far as improvements from DOCSIS 3.0 I've seen none.

I'd be interested to see someone compare speeds coming from a pre DOCSIS 2.0 Modem though

Right. If you lease a modem and have DOCSIS 3.0 in your area, there's no reason NOT to get a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem from Comcast. You're paying the leasing fee, so why not have the best modem?

Comcast said:
Do I need to pay extra to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem?

No. There is no extra fee to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem; however, as with all of our modems, a leasing fee will apply. At this time, DOCSIS 3.0 modems can only be leased through Comcast.

At least in my area unless you are using service that requires a DOCSIS 3.0 modem they won't lease it to you (what I was told).

You both are forgetting that Comcast charges for DOCSIS 3.0 service, it's their upper-two tiers of service.

So wait a minute here, I currently pay for this service through Comcast. Are you saying switching from my current Docsis 2.0 to a Docsis 3.0 modem won't help me in any way unless I upgrade my service to the next level?

YMMV...went to pick one up today. Price came up at $99...mentioned that it was on sale and showed the clerk the ad. He took a look at it and read the part where it says "with new service." I ended up just paying full price because my current modem has been dropping the signal a lot recently.

Oh...this was at the BB off of Carmel Mtn. Rd in SD, CA.

Yes. The Docsis 2.0 modems should be capable of up to 30Mbps. Also keep in mind that the speeds comcast advertises are with PowerBoost. So with the blast tier, your actual sustained speeds are 16Mbps download and 2Mbps upload. With ultra, sustained speeds are 24Mbps download and 5Mbps upload.

So you would need to upgrade to their extreme 50 tier before you would actually need a docsis 3.0 modem.

In upgraded markets, Comcast first upgrades existing speed tiers for free. Comcast's $42.95 "Performance" 6Mbps/1Mbps tier becomes 12Mbps/2Mbps, and their $52.95 "Performance Plus" 8Mbps/2Mbps tier becomes 16Mbps/2Mbps. When your market is upgraded, Comcast also adds two new tiers to the mix: $62.95 "Ultra" 22Mbps/5Mbps and the aforementioned $139.95 "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps.

The 22Mbps and 50Mbps tiers require a new modem.

Both Ultra and Extreme 50 require the new modems so don't think you have to pay the ridiculous $139.95 to take advantage if there is any to be had in the first place.

In for one just to HAX with upload hog coming

I've had DOCSIS 3.0 for about a year now. Since I only use wireless my speeds are limited to wireless G. But when I use a wired connection i get around 60 Mbits. I need to upgrade my router to wireless N soon so I can take advantage of all the speed.

That really sucks, you should get on that, my xps M1330 connects at 144 Mbps on my wireless N home network. Your gonna love it if all you use is wireless.

Score! I just walked out the door with this for $51 ($19 GC FTW). Thanks to the OP, and also the dim-witted BB employees at Crystal Lake, IL ;)

I did a test before (Arris model TM502G) and after.

Nice boost in the upload, and it will pay for itself in 10 months.

You will notice a speed boost. IF 3.0 is supported in your area it gives you a free speed boost, your 8/1 line becomes 12/2 just from the modem. I went with the 22/5 and it's VERY noticeable. Burst speeds (which last the first 5-10 min or so) are 30/8. Download any large stuff, say the digital version of Dragon Age and you'll see instantly what I mean.

I got the same modem last month and my Upload speed doubled.

My fastest download but my upload is almost always over 10Mb/s :tard:

I do have DOCSIS 3.0 in my area but I havent upgraded to that service yet. Soon...
