I am not thrilled with my windows 7 experience so far. Media browser response is pretty slow. Combined with the lack of true client/server interface I am thinking I will go back to sage and try and get some kind of fanart plugin working on it. anybody else have issues with the browising speed in media browser? oh and i keep getting "application not responding" when I try and launch media browser from the xbox 360.

Mine isn't slow at all. I have the movies stored on my server not on my client. when i add new movies sometimes it takes a day or so to load the fan art for it. I think that is more of a metabrowser issue. I have also setup my mediabrowser folders to sit on a RAMdrive.

The lack of a client server interface should have been obvious since it front end only. I use the 360 for games only so i cant help u there.

well W7 and mediabrowser are 2 different things.....

so judging W7 based on the speed of mediabrowser isnt correct.

Also many, many people have been using MB with out the issues you explained. The older version was slow but the last release is quick. I would find the issue with the speed as it is most likely something with your config.....

sage is a good product but is subscription based and doesnt really work with cablecard tuners so only OTA HD or ClearQAM.

MediaBrowser is slow for me as well. I don't have a client/server setup, just one machine running everything in the living room, but loading MediaBrowser from the main menu, it takes awhile to load the plugin, (Full Library Validation 6.9 seconds, Fast MetaData refresh 3.9 seconds). Scrolling through movies/shows with images is very laggy experience. None of the images are very large in size or resolution, no bigger than 1080P. My specs are as follows:

W7 Pro x86
AMD 4850e
M3N78-VM Mobo
4gb ram
Movies/TV stored on a 1TB HD

Not using a ramdrive. I don't like using up nearly all my ram for it, don't feel like buying anymore. When I was trying it out, I kept losing everything in it whenever the PC restarted, it wasn't backing everything up beforehand for some reason.

Anything running in the background? Sometimes people forget if an antivirus program is going. With 4gb of ram you shouldn't be having a problem lol.

when i get home I will see waht mine loads in but it seems like it is less than 1s for quick

I dont expect everyone else is, thats kind of why I posted up...to see if anybody has any suggestions. I loaded win 7 only and media browser plugin. my HTPCs are dedicated machines. and as far as judging win7 based on media browser...media browser is the only thing that got me to go with win 7 so thats why the relation. I already own the sage licenses and I dont use my HTPC for TV (no sat/cable subscription due to budget cuts). I am looking at getting an antenna so I can get the local broadcasts. life without football is tough. but HD broadcasts are not relevant to my setup.

sage isnt subscription based. there is a license fee but there is for win7 as well. Sage cost about $60 and win7 cost what..$100 for an OEM upgrade? not apples to apples since sage requires some form of OS, I understand, just saying win7 isnt free or anything.

I did see the tip about a flash drive for the mediabrowser info and will be trying that. Will do a fresh OS load and give it a shot.

hey, anybody have a good guide for settign up a dedicated win7 PC using media browser? there used to be one here but we know al about that fiasco. is there a consensus replacement?

You mentioned fan art. I (and many others) use Meta Browser in conjunction with Media Browser to pull in more detailed meta data and images.

yeah, I am using metabrowser. thats what I meant to say int he earlier post about the usb drive. I would love some more direction on getting this setup to pull detailed info automatically. I have some 651 items. also, I have tv seasons in vob format...any workaround for that yet?

Your success rate for apps such as these all depend on the format your media is in and how it is organized. Luckily for me, everything works flawlessly because 100% of my media is 720p/1080p H264 video in MKV containers.

My TV shows example:

Code:
 \\ZEUS\Videos\TV Shows\Top Gear\Season 14\Top Gear - S14E04.mkv

Films example:

Code:
 \\ZEUS\Videos\Films\Blade Runner (1982)\Blade Runner (1982).mkv

I point Meta Browser to the Films and the TV Shows directories and let it go to town. Pulls in rich meta data and tons of images for everything.

my structure is the same, minus the year.

\\james\TV\Californication\season 2\ Californication.s02e01.avi

\\james\Movies\Dark Knight\Dark Knight.avi

there is a script out there that creates the folders for you if you had everything in one dir like I did. My issue with the tv shows is that I did straight rips of several series that I want to keep. I added the DIRs as libraries and did the auto scan. I had a lot of manual work to do. and I had issues getting descriptions to save if I remember right.

I've been having (I think) a similar issue - it takes longer than I think it should to open Media Browser once 7MC is started. Once the module is opened, cover art and thumbnails lag a bit, but once all the backgrounds and posters load, browsing is quick. I'm going to try the steps to move the cache to a USB drive and see what happens.

As far as setup guides, I have not seen a worthwhile replacement, but then again, the setup is about as straightforward as you can ask for. I went through what's on their wiki, and looked through the <metabrowser/> forums. With a little trial and error I had my libraries in a better state than I ever did with years of playing with Meedio, and it only took a few hours on a Saturday afternoon.

I did a barebones Win 7 (x64) install, loaded MSE, metabrowser, and Media Browser. I had metabrowser's folder watching functions turned on, but this seemed to cause problems with MSE taking 50-100% cpu usuage all the time, so that had to go. 7MC adds anything in your libraries to Win 7's libraries, which can cause the indexing service to go crazy for a large collection of stuff - I just left it alone for awhile and let it catch up. Besides the slow opening of Media Browser, it seems like 7MC is scanning everything when it starts up, access to any other module is slow (though not as slow as MB). I have not ruled out my hardware, since it's a little old and I don't remember what my OS drive is. I've left everything alone for a few days to let Indexing do its thing, and I'll get back to it over the weekend.

MB wasn't slow for me, it just seemed to crash/not respond/be unavailable and boot me back to the MC menu fairly often when I tried to select a file to play.

Mine is setup exactly like this, and I'm still getting the problems posted above.

I'm beginnng to wonder if this has something to do with it - Could mixing lots of different media types within a library be the culprit? I hope not, since that would defeat the functionality of MB. In my own case, I'm using a consistent folder structure and doing whatever it takes with structure and naming to make metabrowser work as easily as possible, but I create libraries that can be mixtures of different file types (some avi, some mpg, some mkv, etc...), or libraries (like Documentaries) that could contain both 'movies' and 'tv shows' according to the way metabrowser classifies them.

Display- here you can set enable a few options (such as display clock) under the General Display Settings. You can also decide if you want Media Tracking enabled, specify a default theme (currently Default, Vanilla, or Diamond), and set up Media Browser to display the current weather for your location. The get the correct Weather ID you can simply head over to Yahoo (a convenient link is provided) and enter in your town. Once you do this it is not apparent exactly where the Weather ID is, so you just need to look in your webpage address bar to find (see second screenshot below, I circled the Weather ID). NOTE – a bug has been reported with the current release of Media Browser where having the Weather ID populated freezes Media Browser. I have confirmed this on my system, so for the time being I recommend you keep this field blank.

Perhaps this is the source of your problem?

I wouldn't mind them removing that feature from MediaBrowser entirely. I go into MediaBrowser to watch movies. Who cares about the weather. lol

I would not mind, however, if there were separate weather plug-in for 7MC, similar to what the Nintendo Wii has.

That weather trick definitely cut the loading time of MediaBrowser way down. Browsing through movies/shows still sucks though.

cool, will take that out. good to hear I am not the only one with the problem I guess.

i didnt even think about the weather addin. i have not been using it. perhaps that is why i dont see much of a slow down

I run Media Browser on a 2GHz Core Duo machine with 1GB of RAM and it runs beautifully. Sounds like user error to me, the software clearly runs great on my older hardware.

Yes, the weather plugin is a known problem make sure you disable it. It is being removed in the next version due in a week or so thankfully.

The usb flash for imagecache does help a bit but not as much as a ram drive if you can afford a few gigs worth.

Media Browser on the extender is slow for me. I'm using an XBOX360 in the living room. Browsing movies is painfully slow. On the Windows 7 machine running the Windows Media Center host, everything is fine.
