I need a new GPU in the rig in my sig. Right now I have a HD2900xt 512 GPU that I would like to upgrade. My plan is to get a HD4890 1gb card that I will be using to game at 1600 x1200 @ 85hz with high AA and AF.

Now will the 4890 be bottlenecked at this resolution with my 6000+ @ 3.2ghz? Will this be a noticeable upgrade over the HD2900xt?

4890 Should be a noticeable upgrade IMO. If anything bottlenecks you it's going to be your cpu.

I suggest upgrade to athlon II. And try your luck at unlocking it.

Upgrade GPU now, then upgrade the rest later. The 2900XT is going to be worse off then the X2 6400+. I'm guessing you would ask for a complete system upgrade suggestion if you could afford it, or wanted it right now.

This.

A 2900XT isn't even quite as fast as an 8800GTS320/640, and that's an old card by today's standards.

Get the 4890!

at 1600x1200 and with your cpu you might as well go with a 4870. with your cpu a 4890 is not likely to provide any improvement over a 4870 especially in min framerate. also 2gb of ram doesnt cut it anymore unless you are running XP.

I played WoW(I know, it didn't take much) on 1 GB of memory and Vista for quite a while. You should be ok with 2 GB for a while. I wouldn't get too crazy trying to upgrade the CPU/Ram right now unless you can afford to build from the ground up or you can get a phenomenal deal. 4890 or 4870 either one is liable to be held back by your CPU at times but will be a solid improvement from the 2900XT. You are upgrading 2 generations and staying with the top-end GPU available for each generation. For 1600x1200 either of those cards will be great. Save your cash and upgrade the rest when you can.

Well apparently his motherboard can support a Phenom II 940 with the latest BIOS...

Where did you see that? All I see is Phenom IIX3 715 for the newest cpu.

For right now Im only running XP so my plan was to upgrade the GPU now to squeeze every last bit out of this build then later Im going to be doing the whole thing over again with a new board, cpu, some memory, GPU and a new operating system.

Im really leaning towards the 4890 rignt now because its faster and Im still running XP so I wont have DX11 anyways. I would like to wait just a little longer before the major build and getting into DX11, since this rig still does well with the games I play now like Fallout 3, Mass effect, Call of duty 4 and Assassins creed. I play them all pretty much max out at 1600 x 1200 with AA and AF so all it can do is get better then where Im at now, right?.

The reason I said go with the 4870 and 2gb of ram was because, like it was stated earlier, you really won't see much difference between the 4870 and 4890 unless you do upgrades elsewhere in you system. Adding in the 4870 and 2 more gigs of ram, I wouldn't see a reason to upgrade for quite a while.

the 2 gigs of ram more is a must no matter what card u pick.
with XP is not necessary at the moment. with Vista then yes because there are at least a couple of games that will hitch with only 2gb.

I still think the 4870 is plenty for 1600x1200 especially with the cpu that he has. there is little to no chance the 4890 will improve on the minimum framerate over the 4870 while using that cpu. really I cant imagine being stuck on a 4:3 aspect ratio resolution like 1600x1200 when modern games are designed with widescreen in mind. also I would hate to be using XP at this point too. I am not trying to be disrespectful to the OP but I am just pointing out that much of his system is not what I would consider modern.
