Dirt2 PC demo and Benched DX11

So, is anyone playing the full game via their free Steam download yet? I haven't tried to preload it yet, or done much of anything really, but I notice it keeps getting pushed later and later... first it was Dec. 1, then Dec. 4, now it's Dec. 8. What's up with this?

I haven't downloaded the demo because I figured I'd have the whole damn game soon enough...

If you have a code that came with an ATI card, you can reactivate it on steam and it will let you download Dirt2. It will tell you the code has already been activated then lets you download, but still won't show in My Games. Next go to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common and wait for the Dirt2 folder to be 10.5gb then run dirt2.exe. No key is needed unless you want to sign into live, which isn't necessary.

Awesome, been playing for a bit. Thanks.

Googly eyed skull is awesome!

Shame about the cut scenes. Annoying.

I would say as long as it shows that you "own" the product in the "your account" section of Steam all is well. No way they could dispute that....

I just finally got the demo and installed it. The thing is not as bad as I initially expected it to be. I ran the first truck course and it was super smooth and very nice in the eye-candy department. I still have an issue with Codemasters's knack for making menu items hard to find by 'scattering' them all over the place in the game. I'm running it at 1600 x 1200 @85 Hz on an I7-920@3GHz with a GTX 275. I benched at 63.1 fps min and 76.7 fps max. Hopefully their Formula1 game will be as nice looking.

Alt tab doesn't work
Steam Overlay doesn't work
My product key from ATI won't work with G4WL so I can't play online
Game still isn't in My Games in Steam.

I ran into this "problem", the key for steam isn't the same as the key for G4WL, if you add the key in steam to unlock the game and install it, when you launch it from the steam game list it will give you a new key.

You have to add your initial key to steam using the games menu and then select activate a game on steam.

I activated the game through Steam last night to download it but it never shows up in My games tab in Steam.

I have been a tad amused with people getting excited about DX11 in Dirt2. It reminds me of Crysis, probably 95%+ of the game was coded with DX9 and towards the end DX10 was strapped on as a sales gimmick after they nerfed the DX9 Ini's to give DX10 a tangible IQ difference.

Its going to be several years before we see games made from the ground up with DX11 really used well. Until then we will prob have to put up with more bullshit DX11 tech demo's using more wire-frames than DX10 to make it look a LOT better, but hey people are lovin it lol.

As has been said before, this is all par for the course. As with previous DirectX releases, everyone gets just as excited about the new features and the first games to support it. No the first games to support it will probably never have a major usage of it specifically because the hardware to run it is hard to get ahold of and 99% of the market will not have the hardware for a couple of years.

On both sides of the fence this is not new, get over it.

I just want to play the game! DX11 or not. Dirt2 was never suppose to be DX11 but was delayed at AMDs request to add DX11 extentions, so I wouldn't expect much DX11 goodness out of Dirt2

Nice looking game, but I'm not that interested because I really don't have the patience to learn how to control those rally cars (really tight window keeping those things on the track).

Word to the wise: if you want to play this, update your drivers. I was running 9.10, and got like 5fps inside the game. One Cat 9.11 install later and the game ran like buffer on my 4850. Who knew one driver rev would make such a difference :)

GTX 280:D

Wow, not too far behind the 5870 by some of the benches I've seen.

Wow, I was waiting to get a 5850/5870 before I played this but it looks and plays fantastic on my GTX 260. Average fps was 71 and minimum was 55 at 1680x1050 with everything set to high except Post Processing which was Medium.

I think we have killed this a thousand times....if you got a gtx260/gtx275/gtx280/4870/4890.....you do not need a 5850/5870 unless you want eyeinfinity! :p

Yes but the 5870's are running DX11 with tessellation which has a significant hit in FPS. Run the 5870 in DX9 mode for an apples to apples comparison and see if it's anywhere close.

As to playability, I don't think anyone claimed that a 58xx series card was going to be necessary for good performance. Dirt2 is not THAT intensive. It is still afterall, a console port.

9.11 (No Hotfix)

5850
850 core/ 1100 memory
1920x1200, 0xAA, Every detail slider set to highest
49.2 minimum fps
55.1 average fps

Same settings but 8xMSAA
40.3 fps
48.0 average fps

My 'Dirt 2 Not Yet Released' icon is back in My Games. (The game is installed and I've been playing it for days. Just can't save the progress.)

Isn't that kinda crappy since you have to watch the stupid video every time now?

You can get your GFWL key out of the registry to enable progress saving.

5770

1600x1200, 4xAA?, Every detail slider set to Ultra/Highest

29.7 average fps

Which I think is playable and the game looks great, above and beyond the 360 version. I just cant stand the console feel of the game, even on the console it feels to consoltitus.

Dirt2 is also showing back up in my games list as well. Hopefully it stays there and actually gets released tomorrow.

I doubt the dx11 and dx9 differences are factors in the overall look of the game. They probably go unnoticeable to the gamer....unless you are comparing screenshots. So why even run it at dx11 with such a significant performance hit?

Is it just because you have a dx11 card you feel the need to run it at dx11?

Game automatically sets it to dx11 if you're using a dx11 card.

First of all, my post was in regards to peroformance. You seemed to think they performed equally well when infact they don't.

Secondly, You had one too, don't be bitter just becuase you made a foolish mistake. The fact of the matter is, I can have my cake and eat it too. There IS a difference and I CAN run it in DX11 mode while maintaining very good performance. You cannot.

Actually I can't run any game, I have on board graphics at the moment, lol. I don't regret getting rid of the 5850. I'm just pointing out that dx11 probably isn't worth the performance hit. Feel free to post some screenshots of dirt 2 in dx9 vs. dirt 2 in dx10. I really would like to see the difference.

Fixed. There's no DX10 for Dirt 2.

There was a review done with some pretty good comparison shots. They speak for themselves :p

It's already been done. I won't notice the performance hit beucase even with the hit it's still maintaining smooth framerates. So i'm getting better IQ with no noticbale difference in playability. I'm not sitting there staring at my FRAPS counter while i'm racing.
