I built a WHS using the Celeron 430 processor with a Foxconn motherboard (g31mv-k) based on the G31 chipset. The motherboard only lets me decrease the voltage going into the ram slightly, I am unable to underclock my Celeron (although underclocking options are available).
With two drives (a 640gb WD Blue and 1TB WD Green) my idle power consumption is roughly 60 watts measured with a modified power cable with a 1ohm resistor in series with the neutral wire, then I find the voltage drop across the resistor.
Im wondering if you guys know of any Intel 775 cpus that are even more efficient than the Celeron 430? Although the 430 only has 35w TDP, it doesnt have any power saving features when idling such as Intel's Speed Step. I was hoping for a 40 watt or under WHS machine. Of course it wouldnt make economic sense to completely rebuild the WHS based on an Atom or whatever, but Im just curious.
Comments, opinions?
