BF2 Alternative

Fairly simple question. I have gotten back into playing BF2 recently after being tied up in WoW for a while. I was wondering what newer games out there compare. The two main things I'm looking for are squad combat and BF2 sized maps (meaning 50-60 players).

COD:MW2 looked good but I really liked BF2 for the large number of players it supports. Would the original MW (not Mechwarrior :p) be up my alley?

No, it's relatively the same as MW2 except with more grenade spam.

i haven't found anything that can serve as an alternative to BF2. the only thing i can suggest is BF2142, or maybe ARMA2 if you're interested in BF2 + realistic gameplay (+ bugs galore in my experience). MW2 and COD4 will feel extremely cramped and twitch-shooter-like compared to BF2. both COD4 and MW2 are awesome games but not good replacements for BF2.

other than that you have to wait for BF:BC2 and BF3 like the rest of us :)

mmmm, granade spam....

I've got 2142 and played it a bit but I'm more into modern-ish combat. I spent a lot of time on the MoH series and kind of grew a bit bored with the WWII era.

I am assuming that there is no release date for BF3. Any idea when BC2 will be out?

One other question. I've been playing on the Texas Teamplayers server and it seems like a good one. Any others anyone could recommend when that one is full?

I don't know- I just watched some BC2 ps3 beta videos on youtube and looks like they combined COD4 with BC to make BC2. It just looks like the levels are more expansive then in a COD game. If you can get COD:MW cheap I would try it.

If you live in the midwest and like the pings you get from Chicago or Texas servers like TTT then I'd recommend either the =SF= server or FullContactWar. Even some of the other tastefully named servers are great like FaRT and Turd Ferguson's Fun House.

:D

I'll give those a try tonight.

As for COD:MW, I'll see if I can find a cheap copy just to try it out.

It's not really in the same field at all, but maybe TF2.

Most servers are 24 or 32 man, but it's somewhat team-objective based instead of your just standard TDM FPS.

*Not really what you're looking for, but most of my friends that like BF2 enjoy Team Fortress 2 also, so check it out if you want.

Well, I do have quite a few of these games to catch up on so I'll give TF2 a try.

I forsee myself lining Valve's pockets nicely once I install Steam tonight...:p

I should probably have revised my OP as the more I think about it the more I realize that I am probably just looking for good a few good FPS games with good online play. I need to dig up my HL:2 copy as well tonight...

*checks vacation balance to see how much I can burn*

if you're just looking for a good MP FPS then i second TF2. great game. also MW2 is fantastic. i've played little else since it's been released. i'm a huge advocate of COD4, but in my opinion MW2 is a better experience.

Well with the release of the 1.5 patch you do have some additional maps that can hold you over for a while until BC2 is released, but I haven't found a comparible alternative to BF2 because of the lack of vehicles in most other FPS.

This may sound silly but what I really like is the whole top-down structure. Assuming you are on a good server with good players I love it when the commander is doing his/her job, giving orders to squal leaders who then in turn have their sqaud members act out on those orders. To me it gives a more realistic feel.

As for the maps, as I haven't played in about 2 years they are all fresh again to me which helps. What doesn't help is the laid back style of play I got used to in WoW. Doesn't really work in BF2. I've lost track of the times I've been knifed in the last week...:(

If the teams are relatively equal and you arent playing a map where you get bombed from above every 10 seconds, I dont really see an alternative to BF2.

The newer CoD games and also TF2 have too fast gameplay for my taste, you don't savor a kill or a team tactic, like you do in slower games like BF or Red Orchestra.

I recently reinstalled BF2, and found Project Reality mod for both MP and SP. It seems very nice from what I've done in SP, very Arma like (they even recommend an Arma guide for tactical reasons). A simple mod to BF2 might be all you need. I'm just not sure what the player base is for the MP version, and how many servers are out there.

To paraphrase Stewie....Their anguish sustains me....:D

I'm not sure I could get back into twitch shooters like UT and the like.

There isn't anything that compares when it comes to semi-real full scale combined arms combat. 2142 is excellent as well if you can get over that it is not BF2 and not modern day. It's very similar and much more balanced than 2 but it doesn't have as large a community. Both have no competition.

Arma 2 is only fun if you can play with people who will communicate and work together. If you can get that in every game then it's a fantastic experience.

So I'm learning.:(

Not that I'm complaining though. While it's a bit dated I still enjoy the game. It's just that in it's prime there were hundreds of servers with 50+ players on there. It's dwindled down to about 100 now and was hoping the players had migrated to something similar.
