So the other day I picked up a 7206 on ebay for about $55 so I could use it to help study for the ccna.

Today Im sitting here waiting for it to ship and decided to take a look at the picture and I noticed that it doesn't use a rj45 console port but a db25!

Well I have a standard cisco blue cable (rj45 to db9) and I was wondering if I could just use one of those cisco rj45 to db25 adapters with the blue cable or if the pinout was going to be different some wheres along the line.

Most everything I see says use a rollover cable with a rj45 to db9 converter on one end and a rj45 to db25 converter on the other.

Im pretty positive this will work but I want to be sure before I go buy one.

The older NPE's and NSE's don't have any ports on them, they had separate IO cards.

According to the picture it looks like it has the C7200-I/0-FE card, no telling how to get a console cable working for that though.

it's no different. iirc, it should just be a RJ45 jack in the IO controller. plug the blue console cable into it using the standard 9600/8/none/1/none settings and you have yourself a connection. if it is a serial instead of RJ45, it'll be a standard DB-9 or DB-25

It looks like this is what I need Ebay

According to this Cisco doc
"Note: The Cisco 7200 Series and Cisco 7301 are not shipped by default with a console cable kit. If a console cable is required, order an accessory kit (part number: ACS-2500ASYN)."

So just a quick question, without starting a new thread...

My order on the router was messed up, long story short, I didnt end with with a NPE, but its being shipped.

My question is will the router even power on with out an NPE installed?

At the moment I can plug a power cord into it and the fans spin up for a moment but then goes dead. Im hoping this is just becasue there is no NPE installed?

it can't do anything without the NPE(IOS is loaded here), I looked at your auction and it includes the NPE, demand it. You have a chassis with modules that can't do anything without it. The router will power up but it wont do anything.

Oh yeah, sorry I wasn't exactly clear.

I meant that I didnt receive the NPE but the seller is going to ship me one now, after I opened a dispute with paypal.

So yeah Im getting one because that was ridiculous that I didnt get it.

^Did you get your IO card too?

IO card is the bottom slot on the front, NPE/NSE is the bottom slot on the back

Yeah what I ended up getting in the box when I opened it today was:

the 7206
2x FE cards
1x FDDI-MM card
Standard I/O controller with no FE port

He says he will be shipping the NPE-225, hopefully it'll arrive at the same time as my cable kit.

By the way this thing is a beast, a lot heavier then I thought it would be, Im surprised the rack ears keep it upright in my rack.

Yeah i've got a 7204VXR chassis and with both power supplies, I'd swear it weighs at least 50 pounds.
