These 2 look about equal in price & CPU performance, which one would you pick?

LGA 1156, Intel P55
GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD3R == $140
Has limited choice of CPUs in the $200 range
Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz == $200
Total == $350

AM3, AMD 790GX
GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT-UD3H == $100
Includes onboard video ATI Radeon HD3300 /w 128MB DDR3 SidePort memory+UMA.
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition == $190
Total == $300

the p55 socket for me. Mostly because the i5 750 is an overclocking monster (4.4 GHz on air in many builds), uses a little less power and pretty soon more LGA1156 cpus will be releasing, with even more ridiculous multipliers.

However, it depends on what you want to put in your computer... for example if you want to Dual-GPU dat shiz the 790 GX is the logical choice

AMD PII X4 955 with Gigabyte 790X mobo would be cheaper and it would do what the PII X4 965 with 790GX do just fine since both of them have unlocked multiplier.

should this thread be labelled AMD v Intel? who chooses their CPU BRAND based on the mobo chipset they want???

If you are looking for a cheap system, you could also go with a PI X4 955 and AMD 785G mobo.

Thank you. The price of memory is crazy, 4GB costs more than the mobo or a dual core Phenom CPU. Can you smell price-fixing?

RAM price has gone up since I bought my set, it is now almost twice the price when I got it in may.

hands down the 1156
i5 is just faster then any thing AMD offers atm

If you look, you can pay less for a P55 board, I paid $134.95 for a DFI p55 board, and the difference between a 965 and an i5 is a wash.

so for a $20 difference, I have a computer with a lower TDP, that is faster on most occasions, and allows me the choice of SLI or Crossfire if I so choose.

If you're happy with onboard video the 790GX is fine. Unless you get a pretty beefy graphic card the i5 will not be a whole lot faster in gaming - perhaps a little slower even due to immature drivers – and the AMDs also do pretty well in video encoding and such.

Overclocking will also be pretty pointless unless you get that beefy graphic card or do a lot of video encoding or whatever.
