Here’s a new twist on an old scam, ATMs for sale on Craigslist are being bought and used by crooks in a variety of ways (none of them good).

A data security expert in Boston demonstrated this vulnerability. After searching Craigslist for a seller, he found a bar owner looking to liquidate assets. He paid $750 for the ATM, and after a hacker friend looked over the accompanying manual, he was able to get 1,000 account numbers to print out.

I avoid the private ATM's like the ones found in bars, night clubs, gas stations, malls, etc. I don't even trust the ATM's that are branded (but not physically located) by my bank. I've used one in an airport but watched my bank account closely for 4 months afterward.

I've had my card number stolen twice in the past 5 years though. So the only defense is common sense and a watchful eye on your connected bank accounts.

If the crooks were smart, they'd buy an ATM, put it in a location .... and then charge a $3.00 transaction fee!

That was my thoughts. Why scam for account numbers when you could charge $5 a transaction and pay the owner of a gas station to keep it there. You would make a fortune. I guess that is why they are crooks. It does sound like a good idea may have to look into it.
 
The Superman movies have taught me you just need to collect all the fractions of cent, which are rounded off, and send them to an account.
